1 Academic Life in the U.S. NYU students present important information you need to know to adapt to the U.S. academic system. Career Reality 101: Employer Site Visit to Citi (Meet at Wasserman) Learn about Citi, as well as potential internship opportunities for Juniors! Join us as we take you to Citi, today s pre-eminent financial services company. CMEP Graduate Students of Color Social Come celebrate the beginning of 2012 at the first Spring semester Graduate Students of Color Social! The social is an opportunity for graduate students across disciplines, and campuses, to interact with one another and other members of the NYU community. Socials include complimentary appetizers and drink specials for the NYU community. All Allies and Friends of CMEP are welcome to attend! Each social is hosted by the NYU Center for Multicultural Education and Programs (CMEP). The January social is in collaboration with the NYU-Poly. Credit Ability Your credit score is based on how you use credit, and it s a number you can control. Unfortunately, many people don t understand the long-term consequences of their day-to-day financial decisions. Come to this session and we ll teach you what you need to know!
2 Destination Information Interested in getting involved with Graduate Student Life but don t know where start? Come over to the Office of Graduate Student Life for coffee, snacks and a plethora of information. In addition to learning about the physical resources at the Office of Graduate Student Life, you will have the opportunity to meet the staff and sign up for upcoming trips, programs, workshops and leadership opportunities for graduate students at NYU. Finding God at NYU NYU offers a great variety of opportunities to get connected with religious and spiritual communities, services, and leadership opportunities. Don t miss this program, where University Chaplains will offer resources for finding God at NYU. First Commuter Escape of 2012 Every Thursday evening the Commuter Student Council organizes an event for commuters to meet up, enjoy food and drinks and participate in fun social activities. Check out the first Commuter Escape of 2012! First Commuter Social of 2012 Attend the First Commuter Social of the year and enjoy free food provided by Commuter Student Council. Commuter Socials are held every Tuesday throughout the year and are commonly cosponsored with an NYU Office or organization. Learn about different NYU offices, student organizations and other relevant information for the NYU community. Getting Involved at NYU Join various student leaders for an information session on all that student life has to offer at NYU. Learn about how to get involved with All-Square clubs and organizations, Class Activities Boards, Hall Council, and other programs offered at NYU. You will have the opportunity to speak with staff and students and hear from a panel of student leaders who are involved with some of the various programs we offer. Grad Life 101 Direct from the source: The Students. We've collected over the years the best practices from your peers. Come learn about how to navigate the resources at NYU, where the printing labs are, where you can get free wireless, the best study spots and more. Graduate Campus and Neighborhood Tours New York City is one of the most diverse places in the world. By getting out and about in Manhattan you will have the opportunity to experience the diversity of culture, food, music, and people that make the Big Apple such a great place. All tours will stop at one of the famous dessert establishments in NYC where you will be able to purchase a taste of NYC. Graduate Student Campus Tour Departing from the Student Resource Center Office of Graduate Student Life, this tour is designed for Graduate Students and will show you all of the important Washington Square campus locations.
3 Graduate Student Life Social Meet new graduate students from across NYU. Must be an NYU Graduate Student and at least 21 years of age with a valid government ID showing proof of age. Guess the Straight Person Join us for this interactive and fun program where you the audience member pose questions to a panel of NYU queer and ally students, trying to determine which panelist identifies as straight. We will also discuss ways in which everyone can be allies to the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer community. Health and Counseling Services for International Students NYU has a vast array of student services and resources to provide student support, promote student engagement, and help you make the most out of your NYU experience. Come to this session to meet staff members and find out more about how this office can enrich your student life. Library Tour Find out what Bobst Library looks like and be introduced to the collections, services, study spaces, and online resources it has to offer. Information about more detailed classes offered during the semester will also be provided. New to NYU New to NYU?! Whether you are here visiting for one semester or a new transfer, you ll want to come to this session to learn about all things NYU from what campus cash means and how to access various NYU resources, to understanding your meal plan and learning about different student life offices. Have questions about NYU? Don t miss this session! NYU Bike Share Safety Training and Sustainability Info Session Curious about bicycling in New York City? Biking can be a safe, healthy, sustainable, and fun way to get around Manhattan and the boroughs. However, getting a bike can be an expensive and intimidating proposition. The NYU Bike Share offers you, NYU students, faculty, and staff, the opportunity to borrow a bike FREE of charge from any of our eight participating locations throughout campus. Whether you are a first time rider or an experienced cyclist we make sure that you get all of your safety questions answered, and enable you to take the city on by pedal. NYU Sustainability Office student staff will also be there to take your questions on all things green at NYU, including ways for you to get involved with our initiatives and how to connect with student activist groups on campus. On Campus Employment for International Students Co-sponsored by the Office of International Students and Scholars, this seminar will highlight key career development tools, resources and services for international undergraduate and graduate students offered through the Wasserman Center for Career Development. On the Go in NYC On the Go: Navigating the Subway, Bus and Campus Transportation Systems. So you want to ride the subway without looking like a tourist? Come and learn what to do, what not to do, the cheapest way to ride, and how to make yourself the safest possible rider when you use New York City buses, subways, and trains. Also learn how to benefit from NYU s Campus transportation services including trolleys, buses, and vans, and how to ride FREE by just showing your NYUCard!
4 Practical Matters for International Students Get answers to your questions about practical matters in the U.S. Need to find out how to open a bank account? How about the easiest way to obtain a cell phone? These topics, as well as information on eligibility for a driver's license and Social Security Number are discussed. Quench: LGBTQ (Friendly) Clubs & Organizations (Organizations that are not affiliated with the NYU LGBTQ Student Center) There exist hundreds of activist, political, social, spiritual and academic clubs and organizations at NYU. Many of these clubs encourage the participation of LGBTQ people. This QUENCH will feature a panel of NYU club leaders who are not affiliated with the NYU LGBTQ Student Center to showcase the diverse organizations that welcome LGBTQ people. Reality Show: NYU Reality Show: NYU -- a gritty, funny musical about the lives of NYU students as they experience an array of confounding, confusing and exciting issues. Revisiting Research This workshop will provide information about library services and resources that you can utilize for research purposes. Safety in the City New to the City? New York can be intimidating but overall is quite safe. Find out about ways to reduce your chances of becoming a victim and how to protect your property. Presented by the Office of Public Safety. Small Wallet; Big City New York City is an expensive place to live, but also a great place to find a bargain. Learn how to live cheaply and comfortably in NYC. From cheap eats to bargain shopping, arts, and entertainment, and believe it or not, FREE things to do. Great things when you're on a limited budget! Spring at the Square Headquarters Have questions? Get answers! The Student Resource Center will have a headquarters table in the Kimmel Center Lobby on Thursday, January 19 th and Friday January 20 th for students to stop by, collect resources, and ask questions regarding Spring at the Square, school orientations, and all things NYU and NYC. Spring Club Fest Students can learn more about the diverse array of student clubs and organizations reorganized by the Center for Student Activities, Leadership, and Service as well as fraternities and sororities, athletic teams, club sports, and intramurals, on campus. Transfer Talk A panel of current transfer students will answer any question you might have as you transition to NYU. They will share advice they wish they d had when they first transferred to NYU. Wasserman Center for Career Development Information Table Stop by at your convenience for a brief introduction to Wasserman s vast resources. Take a tour of the state-of-the-art space, which includes student computers, career development resources, a student café with free coffee and tea, and comfortable spaces to study and work on your resume. Wasserman Center for Career Development Orientation (Undergraduate) This seminar will highlight key career development tools, resources and services for undergraduate and graduate students offered through the Wasserman Center for Career Development.
