2 The School Hogeschool Utrecht (HU) is the third largest university of Applied Sciences in the Netherlands. They offer approximately 30,000 students a wide range of courses spread within six principal themes: Natural Sciences & Technology Economics & Management Communication & Journalism Health Care Education Society & Law Hogeschool Utrecht has several locations in the centre of Utrecht, on De Uithof campus and in the town of Amersfoort (HU Amersfoort, 25 km from Utrecht). Winters can be fairly cold with the possibility of some snow. Rainfall is prevalent all year. Temperatures average 16ºC in summer and 3ºC in winter. Attractions and places of interest Utrecht lies in the centre of the Netherlands, just half-an-hour by train from its capital Amsterdam. There are many museums, including the recently opened Miffy Museum, which attracts hordes of tourists. The modern art museum, the Centraal Museum, the railway museum and St Catherine s Convent (for the history of Christianity in the Netherlands) and the museum of musical instruments are also very popular. There are plenty of cinemas and a film house for movie-goers and various theatres and clubs. Every summer Utrecht hosts a film festival, a festival of old music and a dance festival. There are loads of restaurants and bars, where you can enjoy a cup of coffee with apple cake (the most popular cake in the Netherlands), a light lunch, a drink or a dinner. People and culture The Dutch society is egalitarian and modern. The people are modest, tolerant, independent, self-reliant, and entrepreneurial. They value education, hard work, ambition and ability. The Dutch have an aversion to the nonessential. Ostentatious behaviour is to be avoided. Accumulating money is fine, but spending money is considered something of a vice. A high style is considered wasteful and suspect. The Dutch are very proud of their cultural heritage, rich history in art and music and involvement in international affairs. Cost of Living Housing have the highest density of inhabitants per km2 in Europe. In big cities like Utrecht, it is hard to find accommodation. Be aware of the fact that most students in Utrecht live together with more students in a student house. Most likely, you will have your own room with at least a bed, a desk and a cupboard. Usually you need to share a bathroom and kitchen with more people.

Transportation Most Dutch people ride bicycles to get anywhere they need to go. They usually have the right of way over cars and it s a great way to get exercise!
