1 Welcome To Pace University New York City Housing, 2016 Living on campus more than simply having a place to sleep and spend time between classes. Housing and Residential Life seeks to provide a safe, and academically supportive living environment for students at Pace University. Life in the residence halls is filled with opportunities and challenges, both of which promote the personal development of our students. With the constructive guidance of a supportive staff, the residence halls are a place where students build their own communities, learn to balance independence and autonomy with interdependence, and develop responsibility and accountability. This brochure is designed to provide information that students will need in preparation for moving in to Pace University s Residence Halls in New York City. If you have questions prior to receiving your housing assignment, please refer first to this brochure, then to the list of Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) on our website. If the answers to your questions are not listed on either of those resources, please check other sections of our website, or us at nyhousing@pace.edu. If you do not receive a response within 24 hours, please call our office at You should expect the following communications from housing prior to moving in for the fall: In the middle of June we will you instructions for completing TheRoommateProject survey. Your responses to this will help us place you in a residence hall and match you with a roommate. Students will not receive a room assignment if they have not completed and submitted this online form, so please do so before July 23 rd. In the second week of August room assignments will be sent by . These will include roommate contact information, and move-in appointments. There will be special housing information sessions at Orientation (for both students and parents). Don t miss these chances to learn more about the residence halls, and have your specific questions answered. We will send a link to an express check in packet (with forms that must be read and signed before checking in) to all students about 10 days prior to move-in. When and How are Housing Assignments Made? Specific building and room assignments for the fall will not be issued until the end of the summer. See the section Housing Preferences below for information on how students will be able to go online to submit their housing preferences. After the completion of the last overnight orientation program (July 21 and 22) we will begin making assignments according to the indicated preferences. Preferences cannot be guaranteed. The process by which we make housing assignments is explained in the Housing Preferences section of this brochure. Students will receive an during the second week of August with their room assignment, the name(s) and contact information of their roommate(s), and their move-in appointment time. Planning for Your Arrival In the weeks prior to moving in, please take time to review our online welcome and planning information. This portion of our website includes a range of information that will help you prepare for your arrival, including a list of what you may (and may not) bring with you when you move in, a map with area parking garages, specific directions to each building, shipping instructions, and the move-in schedule. Please note that we do not allow outside furniture (chairs, mattresses, desks, etc.) and that our beds are ETRA-LONG TWIN in size. The planning section of our website can be found here: h"p://&nyurl.com/planningforyourarrival. Moving In: Each student s specific move-in date and time will depend on the building and floor to which they are assigned, but move-in for new students for the fall semester will take place on Saturday, September 3 rd, Sunday September 4 th, and Monday September 5 th, between 9AM and 5PM each day. A schedule of move-in times can be found at the Welcome To Pace NYC Housing - Planning for Your Arrival section of our website (see above). If circumstances require that you move in on a specific day (e.g. you must purchase airline tickets earlier than we intend to release room assignments), please refer to the Early Arrival section on the last page of this brochure. Facebook and Other Social Networks Now is the time for you to take a critical look at your page(s) on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and other social networking sites. These pages will often be the first exposure your roommate(s) will have to you. In the spirit of promoting positive online communication with your new roommate(s) before you meet, we strongly encourage you to consider aspects of your page(s) that may be viewed as inappropriate or offensive to others. Online community pages are often a place in which people celebrate aspects of their life for which they have a passion, but in doing so they might not provide a complete understanding of a well-rounded person. We hope you will take time to use these resources as an honest means by which to appropriately introduce yourself to others. Roommate switches will not be considered based on information discovered on Facebook, etc. Disability Accommodations In accordance with applicable federal, state, and city disability laws, Pace University will provide reasonable accommodations for students with one or more qualifying disabilities that substantially limit their ability to reside in Pace University housing. Requests for accommodations are reviewed by the Office of Disability Services (ODS). To begin the process to request an accommodation, students must meet the housing eligibility requirements, complete the Housing Accommodation Request Packet (found here: h"p://&nyurl.com/requestforaccommoda&ons), and submit medical documentation to the ODS. The ODS strongly recommends that all students who wish to request accommodations due to a disability, do so by July 15, 2016, to allow adequate time to review the request. Please download and carefully read the Housing Accommodation Request Packet. If you have any questions, please contact the Office of Disability Services at or disability@pace.edu.

2 Housing Preferences STARTING JUNE 15TH, incoming fall students will be eligible to provide us with their housing preferences via THE ROOMMATE PROJECT ( In June, an will be sent to all new housing students reminding them of this process. THE ROOMMATE PROJECT is an online service utilized by Pace NYC Housing which will allow you to provide us with the following kinds of information: first and second choice building theme floor preference (optional) one or two students with whom you would like to be assigned (optional; note: only reciprocal roommate requests will be granted) whether it is more important for you to get the building of your choice, or the roommate of your choice other roommate matching criteria, like bedtime, study habits, organizational style, etc. whether or not you would like to volunteer for a temporary assignment (more information on the next page) THE ROOMMATE PROJECT is quick and easy to do. Beginning June 15, navigate to enter Pace University, and then enter your name. You will be sent an (to the address we have on file) with a registration link. Click on the link, complete your registration, and fill out the survey. That s all it takes! You can log on and update your choices as many times as you like, but the survey will close on July 23 rd. After that date, we will not accept any more online housing preferences, and we will begin the room assignment process. Students will not receive a room assignment if they have not completed and submitted this form, so please do so before July 23 rd. Even if you have already indicated some type of housing preference on your original application (e.g. by making notes in the margin, providing an attachment to your application, or sending the housing office supplementary s) you MUST still log on to THE ROOMMATE PROJECT and complete the housing preference information. Due to the quantities of applications processed by the housing office, notations made on applications regarding preferences are often unreliable. Additionally, we find that many students change their minds about their preferences during the summer. For this reason we rely on the most recent information that students send us through THE ROOMMATE PROJECT. Remember: housing preferences are primarily met in the order of the date that each student's HOUSING application and deposit was received, although Honors Students are placed first, followed by students in the Dyson School of Liberal Arts and Sciences who have requested to live in one of the Dyson House Floors (see Theme Floors below). Not all preferences can be guaranteed. Also, if we receive conflicting preferences (e.g. you ask to be placed with a roommate in one building, but that roommate requests a different building) the Office of Housing and Residential Life reserves the right to make the final determination of placement. If you are planning to request specific roommates, make sure they request you as well, and make sure you all indicate the same building/theme floor preference(s). NYC Residence Halls The New York Campus will offer four different residence halls in , each with its own unique style, features and amenities. Additional housing options may be added as enrollment demands. First year students are primarily placed in Maria s Tower and 182 Broadway, but may be placed in other locations as enrollment demand increases. More information (including virtual tours of all of our residence halls) is available on our website. First Year Transfer Graduate Initial base housing charge $ /semester $ /semester $ /semester Initial base dining charge $1730 bronze dining plan (includes $110 flex dollars) $950 blue dining plan (includes $100 flex dollars) $ grad and law dining plan Potential fee adjustments, depending on final room assignment Final charges may be increased by up to $440 (for students placed in 182 Broadway), and reduced by up to $440 (for students placed in Maria s Tower doubles); students who are assigned to and move in to a Maria s Tower temporary triples will receive a $800 discount. Students assigned to medical singles in Maria s Tower will be charged an additional $1400 over the base rate. Final charges may be increased by up to $930 (for students placed in singles in 33 Beekman). Final charges may be increased by up to $930 (for students placed in singles in 33 Beekman). What s in a Residence Hall Room? While each of our residence halls offers a slightly different set of amenities and features, there are some features shared by nearly all rooms. With the exception of Maria s Tower Temporary Triples and 182 Broadway Temporary Quads, each room has the following minimum items: 1 ETRA LONG twin bed per resident Ethernet jack (one per resident) 1 desk and desk chair per resident 1 dresser (or equivalent storage area) per resident closet area or wardrobe (may be shared with another resident) cable TV jack (at least one per room) blinds on all windows Please reference the Temporary Assignments section for more information about furnishings differ in those rooms. For a list of what you may (and may not) bring with you when you move in, please refer to the Virtual Welcome Packet on the Pace NYC Housing website (more specific directions to the website can be found under the Planning for Your Arrival section on the front page of this brochure). This website also includes a link to a site we recommend for students assigned to Maria s Tower who wish to rent a microwave/refrigerator combination. Regular Triples in 182 Broadway 84% of the available beds in 182 Broadway are in standard triple rooms. Standard triple rooms are fully equipped with a full complement of furniture for three students (individual beds, desks, dressers, wardrobes. It is a reality that most students placed in 182 Broadway will be placed in a triple room. Even if you identify only one other person as your preferred roommate, and we are able to honor that request, the two of you are likely to be placed in a triple (with a third roommate) if you request 182 Broadway as your first choice building. Temporary Assignments Due to the extremely high demand for university housing, in order to accommodate the maximum number of residents, Pace implements temporary room assignments. A small number of doubles in Maria s Tower are converted to temporary triples, and a small number of triples in 182 Broadway are converted to temporary quads. In our experience, the vast majority of temporary assignment rooms are converted back to normal occupancy by the start of October, many being done prior to the opening of the residence halls. All temporary assignment rooms are guaranteed to be reverted back to their normal occupancy by the beginning of the spring term. Temporary assignment rooms are standard double and triple rooms with all the regular furnishings for that room type, plus ONE additional twin bed. Students assigned to a temporary assignment will be required to share desks, dressers, closets and chairs until the room is reverted back to normal occupancy. Please note: Maria s Tower temporary triples should not be confused with standard triple rooms. Triple rooms in all of our other residence halls are standard (permanent) triple occupancy rooms, designed and fully equipped for three residents. Students assigned to a temporary assignment at the time of move in will receive a discount of $800. Students still assigned to a temporary assignment after the end of October will receive an additional $800 off their first semester rent. Students are typically placed in temporary assignments if they volunteer, or if they applied and deposited for housing late (relative to other students applying for housing). Temporary assignments are not available to students newly applying for housing in the spring semester.

4 Life in the Residence Halls The residence halls are a thriving community where students participate in a range of co-curricular activities. Incoming students will want to become familiar with the following facets of residence hall life that help develop our highly engaged communities. Resident Assistants (or RA s) are assigned to each floor. They serve as a peer leader, mentor and resource for residents of that floor. The RA staff also coordinates activities and events (see Programs ), assists in maintaining order and resolving conflict, and provides a supportive response to students in crisis. Each year (beginning in December), the Office of Housing and Residential Life conducts an RA selection process to seek out student leaders to serve in these roles. Programs are planned by the RA staff throughout the year. They consist of a range of social and educational activities that enhance the academic experience and provide opportunities for community development. Residence Hall Association (or RHA) is a governance body within the residence halls that serves the dual roles of planning events and activities for residents, and providing advocacy and representation of the residents to the administration. Students may become involved in RHA at a number of levels, from volunteering for a committee or program, participating in a Resident Forum ( town hall ) meeting, to running for a position as a hall representative or on the RHA executive board. NRHH (or National Residence Hall Honorary) is the premiere honorary dedicated to recognizing leaders and scholars in the residence halls. Each NRHH chapter membership (per school) is restricted to 1% of students living in the residence Halls. Members are considered, once inducted, to be the Top 1% of residence hall leaders across the nation. Employment the Office of Housing and Residential Life is one of the largest student employers on campus. Each year we hire more than 60 RA s, about 65 community desk attendants (the staff members who staff the desks where guests sign in and out) and about 10 office assistants (student aids serving the housing office). Housing is a great place to develop leadership skills while building your resume. Early Arrival Students who wish to arrive early for ANY reason (including those who must make early airline arrangements, or who must participate in late orientation, transfer orientation, or international student orientation), must complete an early arrival request form online. Students are generally not permitted to arrive earlier than one day before they are required to be on campus, and no students are permitted to move in to housing earlier than August 24 th. Early arrival requests cannot always be accommodated, particularly for local students and/or when the need can be met by moving in at a later date rather than an earlier date. The online form for early arrival will go live on June 15, and can be found on the following page: h"p://&nyurl.com/virtualwelcomepacket. Your Student Account The payment deadline for fall 2016 is August 1, Your account must be in good standing before you will be able to move in to the residence halls. If you have concerns about billing or other account issues, please contact Office of Student Assistance at The scheduled move in days for new students will be September 3 rd and 4 th (as noted, your specific day and time will correspond to the building and floor to which you are eventually assigned, but if you need to make flight arrangements at this time, you may safely do so for either of those days; if you need to arrive earlier than September 3 rd, please refer to the Early Arrival section above). Cancelling Your Housing If you decide to withdraw your application for university housing, you must complete a Housing Cancellation Form. This form can be found on the NYC Office of Housing and Residential Life web page: h"p://&nyurl.com/cancelpacehousing. To cancel, read the cancellation form, complete it, and fax it to After May 1, only the $100 damage deposit portion of your initial housing deposit is refundable, and only if you complete and submit a Housing Cancellation Form. If you do not submit a Housing Cancellation Form, we will continue to hold a bed for you for the fall, and you may still be responsible for a portion of the semester housing fee. If you wish to cancel your housing application, you must notify housing directly using this form. Notifying admissions or the registrar that you are no longer attending Pace, or that you have changed to commuter status, without completing the housing cancellation form, will result in a delay in receiving a refund of your damage deposit. Videos and Social Media We encourage you to follow Pace NYC housing on social media. We are PaceUniversityOHRL on Facebook, on Instagram we can be found at pacenycohrl, and on During the summer (starting around June 1) will post a series of short videos about life in the Pace University NYC residence halls (about one new video each week). Each new video will contain insight into helping you prepare for life on campus, and provide tips for how you can be more successful when you arrive for the fall. We hope that you will take time to watch these videos, and that they will help you get off to a great start here at Pace! The videos will be posted at our YouTube page, which is: youtube.com/pacenychousing. You can visit now to see videos the Resident Assistant staff made last year about process of checking in to each of our residence halls. Also, speaking of social media, now is the time for you to take a critical look at your page(s) on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat and other social networking sites.

5 Insurance While the residence halls are a safe and supervised environment, sometimes accidents do happen. The University assumes no responsibility of any kind for loss or damage to personal property caused by fire, water, theft, the actions of other students or guests, or any other cause whatsoever. Personal property stored in resident rooms shall be stored at the owner s risk. Students are encouraged to secure college student property insurance coverage like that provided by NSSI ( Students may also be eligible for coverage under the insurance plan of a parent or guardian. We highly encourage students to investigate these options so they are aware of their own coverage (and liability) prior to moving in. Theme Floors Certain floors in certain residence halls have been designed as Theme Floors. Theme floors are simply communities that are built around a common interest or theme. Programming on these floors is more structured than on non-theme floors, and is carefully planned to adhere to the given theme. Students interested in living in a theme floor community should indicate their theme floor preference when completing the preference survey on TheRoommateProject website. In , we plan to offer theme floor options as listed below (theme floors are subject to change each year).
