2 GfNA-II-C-ERA EILC grant agreement-annex II-organising institution information form version October 2011 PART I: GENERAL INFORMATION DESCRIPTION OF TOWN - SHORT HISTORY AND LOCATION Written reference to Linköping was made as early as 1120 A.C. when the city was an Episcopal see. The building of a cathedral began in Four centuries later, one of Sweden s first pre-university schools was founded. Contemporary Linköping continues its tradition as a set of learning through a modern university founded in the sixties. Linköping is the 5th largest city in Sweden with approximately inhabitants. Linköping is situated in southern Sweden, 200 kilometres south of Stockholm. Despite its growth, Linköping has retained a small-town charm. An excellent network of bicycle paths makes it easy to get around, which is a great advantage for the students (only 15 minutes by bike from the main campus to the city centre). - MAIN LOCAL/CULTURAL EVENTS The City of Linköping offers visitors and inhabitant s beauty, excitement and other great experiences. We have a living, wellpreserved city centre with many shops, cafés, restaurants and dance halls. Film, theatre, music and exhibitions can be enjoyed all round the year. Not forgetting the student orchestra festival, the world famous Old Linköping, the Air Force Museum, the County Museum, the Cloetta Center, the Cathedral, sports grounds, etc. The several old castles round the city are well-known sights for excursions with activities. The Göta Canal, which runs into Lake Roxen, and the Kinda Canal down by the Kinda lakes are an experience, with many old locks and fine surroundings - for tourists on land as well. On the outskirts there are shopping centres that are visited from far and near - IKEA, among others. More information: - HOW TO REACH TOWN (LINKS FROM THE NEAREST AIRPORT, TRAIN OR COACH STATIONS) There are many ways to reach Linköping. The city can be reached by train, flight, bus as well as by car. Flying to Stockholm or Copenhagen and taking the train/bus to Linköping is one of the options. The local airports in Linköping and in Norrköping have regular flight connections to domestic and international destinations. A low fair airline operating in Nyköping/Skavsta airport flies regularly to many European cities. The Nyköping/Skavsta airport is approximately situated 100 km north from Linköping and a regular bus service connects Linköping and the airport. Long distance busses from all over Europe arrive at Linköping Central Station. More information: - TRANSPORT IN TOWN (BRIEF INFORMATION ON THE MAIN MEANS OF TRANSPORT AVAILABLE) An extensive local bus network connects the city. Local buses connect the campus to different city areas. The most convenient transport is the bicycle. Since the university is very close to the students accommodation, it takes only 10 minutes to walk and 5 minutes to bike to the university. 2
3 GfNA-II-C-ERA EILC grant agreement-annex II-organising institution information form version October 2011 SHORT DESCRIPTION OF THE ORGANISING INSTITUTION Linköping University, also called LiU, has undergraduate students, research students and employees. It is Sweden s fifth largest university and ranks second in engineering and natural sciences enrolments. In only three decades, LiU has become internationally renowned for its innovative education spirit and for its stated ambition to foster cross-disciplinary cooperation. From the start, the university was organised along multidisciplinary lines. A thematic approach to arts and science research has given rise to many interdisciplinary study programmes, which were later taken up by other universities. Students come from all over the world to study the programmes taught in Swedish and in English. Approximately 1200 international students attend Linköping University each year among which approximately 1000 are exchange students. ACCOMMODATION - SHORT DESCRIPTION OF THE ACCOMMODATION OFFERED (HOTEL, APARTMENTS, STUDENT HALLS, OTHERS; IF THERE ARE COOKING FACILITIES) AND ON THE RENT TO BE PAID PER WEEK In Linköping, most students live in student housing areas situated within cycling distance of the campus. Many students live in co-ed dormitories, which are organised in corridor groups. Each corridor consists of eight student rooms with bathrooms, a shared living room and a shared kitchen. Laundry facilities are available in each building. Each student room is furnished with a bed, a desk, bookshelves and chairs. Students furnish their own bedding. The rent for a dormitory room is around 2,700 Swedish kronor per month, paid in advance. Electricity and heating are included in the rent. Students can apply for accommodation through the university, but it is not guaranteed. Since the number of student rooms offered by the university is limited, students are advised to apply for corridor rooms directly to the student housing companies (Studentbostader, Byggvesta, Graflunds or through the university s notice board). Hostel rooms are also available at a fair cost. More information (housing): More information (hostels): MEALS - SHORT DESCRIPTION ON THE SERVICES OFFERED (UNIVERSITY CANTEENS, RESTAURANTS, BARS, OTHERS) As mentioned before, there are cooking facilities available for the students living in corridor rooms. There are more than 5 student restaurants. The average price for a lunch on campus is approximately 50 Swedish kronor. There are several lunch rooms (equipped with microwave ovens) on campus. RECEPTION OF STUDENTS - MEETING POINT (PLACE, DATE AND TIME OF FIRST MEETING - FOR EACH COURSE WHERE DIFFERENT) EILC students are advised to arrive in Linköping before the course starts. Upon arrival all the students are expected to visit the International Exchange Coordinator in the D-building in order to get a welcome package and the program for the orientation program. The students getting a corridor room through the university are able to get their keys in the same office. August: Arrival day, August 1 st. The course will start on Friday, August 2 nd at 9 o clock.
