Page 4 f 25 2 OVERVIEW The Prbe Adjustment functin is used t adjust the HC2 prbes and ther AirChip 3000 devices against a reference humidity and temperature envirnment. This sectin f the HW4 manual cvers nly the HW4 Prbe Adjustment functin specific f AirChip 3000 devices such as: HygrClip 2 (HC2) prbes HF3 transmitters and therm-hygrstats HF4 transmitters HF6 transmitters HL20 and HL21 data lggers HP21 hand-held indicatr Custm designed OEM prducts HW4 functins that are nt device dependent are cvered in dcument E-IN-HW4v3-Main. When HW4 has detected a HC2 prbe r ther AirChip 3000 device, an icn appears in the left pane f the HW4 main screen (HygrClip 2 prbe in this example). Click n the + sign t the left f the icn t display a list f the available functinal mdules. In the case f a HF53 r HF55 transmitter, HP22 indicatr r similar device, HW4 displays a prbe icn. This icn has the same functinality as the icn shwn in the previus illustratin. Nte: the prbe icn is nt available with the HF52 transmitter. 3 SINGLE PROBE ADJUSTMENT T select the Prbe Adjustment mdule, click n it with the left muse buttn. HW4 pens the Prbe Adjustment frm. Prbe Adjustment autmatically interrgates the prbe and dwnlads its current adjustment data.

Page 6 f 25 3.1 Functin verview Fr bth humidity and temperature, the adjustment functin is a 2-step prcess. Please nte that bth steps d nt have t be carried ut at the same time r n the same day. Step 1: Calibratin Calibratin cnsists in capturing humidity and / r temperature values measured by an instrument at a number f knwn reference cnditins withut making any changes t the instrument. As-Fund data is the result f a calibratin. Temperature: the AirChip 3000 can retain in memry up t 2 calibratin pints, each cnsisting f: measured temperature value and reference temperature value. The calibratin pints are retained in memry until erased by the user r until the AirChip 3000 device is adjusted by the user. The calibratin pints are read by HW4 whenever the Prbe Adjustment frm is pened. In principle, the calibratin pints can be saved in any rder. Humidity: the AirChip 3000 can retain in memry up t 100 calibratin pints, each cnsisting f: measured humidity value, reference humidity value and temperature value measured at the time f calibratin. The calibratin pints are retained in memry until erased by the user r until the AirChip 3000 device is adjusted by the user. The calibratin pints are read by HW4 frm AirChip 3000 whenever the Prbe Adjustment frm is pened. In principle, the calibratin pints can be generated at any temperature and saved in any rder. Nte: HW4 ffers the pssibility f using the dew r frst pint measured by a chilled mirrr instrument as the surce fr the reference humidity value. Based n the temperature measured by the AirChip 3000 device, HW4 cnverts the dew r frst pint int relative humidity. Step 2: Adjustment Adjustment cnsists in making the humidity and / r temperature values measured by an instrument agree as clsely as pssible with a number f knwn reference cnditins. As-Left data is the result f an adjustment. Temperature: the temperature signal f the AirChip 3000 device is adjusted based n the calibratin pints present in memry. The type f adjustment depends n the number f calibratin pints: - 1 calibratin pint: ffset adjustment (equivalent t a 1-pint adjustment) - 2 calibratin pints: ffset and slpe adjustment The AirChip 3000 uses a 4 th degree plynmial t change the raw data generated by the temperature sensr t a linear respnse. Fr details, see dcument E-T-AC3000-DF-V1. A 1-pint adjustment changes the ffset used by the temperature A/D cnverter. This is equivalent t changing the value R 0 (resistance value f the RTD at 0 C) in the 4 th degree plynmial used by the AirChip 3000. A tw-pint adjustment changes bth the ffset used by the temperature A/D cnverter and the cefficient A (slpe) f the 4 th degree plynmial used by the AirChip 3000. In additin t the user generated values, the AirChip 3000 retains in memry the factry defaults fr the value R 0 and the cefficients f the 4 th degree plynmial. The factry defaults cannt be changed by the user and are always available t return the AirChip 3000 device t its riginal cnditin. Adjustment accuracy depends bth n the number and n the distributin f the calibratin pints ver the temperature range t be measured.
Page 7 f 25 As an alternative methd, the temperature signal f the AirChip 3000 device can be adjusted by ding a 1- pint calibratin at 0 C and entering a new set f cefficients fr the 4 th degree plynmial. In this case temperature calibratin pints are nt required. Humidity: the AirChip 3000 adjusts the raw humidity data prvided by the sensr s as t agree with the calibratin pints present in memry. The type f adjustment depends n the number f calibratin pints: - 1 calibratin pint: general ffset adjustment (equivalent t a 1-pint adjustment) - 2 calibratin pints: ffset and slpe adjustment - 3 r mre calibratin pints: ffset, slpe and linearizatin adjustment The AirChip 3000 retains in memry tw sets f tables. The cmbined data frm bth tables is used t change the humidity sensr raw data t a linear signal (see Measurement Mdel). Table A1% hlds the factry default values and table A2% hlds the values generated as a result f the mst recent humidity adjustment by the user. Initially all values in table A2% are set t zer. The values in bth tables A1% and A2% are valid when the humidity sensr is at a temperature f 23 C. Regardless f the actual temperature assciated with each humidity calibratin pint, the values in table A2% are autmatically brught back t the 23 C reference temperature. This cnversin relies n the sensr temperature cmpensatin data that is prgrammed by the factry in the AirChip 3000 memry. The accuracy f the user adjustments depends bth n the number and n the distributin f the calibratin pints. The mst accurate adjustment results are btained by using several calibratin pints, equally distributed ver the humidity range t be measured. The factry values A1% cannt be changed by the user and are always available t return the AirChip 3000 t its riginal cnditin. IMPORTANT: Be sure that the reference envirnment is stable and that the instrument t be adjusted has equilibrated with the envirnment. Always verify that the instrument temperature measurement is accurate. If necessary, adjust temperature prir t any humidity adjustment. T btain the best accuracy when calibrating humidity, we recmmend using a sequence f increasing humidity values. In this manner the effect n the calibratin data f the humidity sensr hysteresis is practically eliminated (sensr hysteresis is a temprary psitive shift in the sensr respnse at lw humidity fllwing expsure f the sensr t high humidity) D nt interrupt the adjustment prcess while HW4 and the AirChip 3000 are cmmunicating as this may give unexpected results Adjustment is nt recmmended while data is being lgged
Page 8 f 25 3.2 Menu Bar The menu bar is lcated at the tp f the Prbe Adjustment frm. 3.2.1 File The file menu is used t save t the PC the adjustment data that is currently in the AirChip 3000 memry. The data are saved in an XML file with extensin ADJ. In case f prblems, this file may be send t the ROTRONIC field supprt fr truble shting. Save As: saves the current cnfiguratin t an XML file with the extensin ADJ in the selected flder. Clse: clses the Prbe Adjustment frm
Page 9 f 25 3.2.2 Settings and Tls Humidity Reset prbe t Factry Adjustment: returns the AirChip 3000 t the factry (default) humidity adjustment and reverts the effect f any adjustments made by the user. Erase all saved calibratin pints: deletes frm the AirChip 3000 memry all humidity calibratin pints that may be present and that have nt yet been used t adjust the AirChip 3000. %RH Reference / Dew Pint Reference / Frst Pint Reference: specify which parameter will be used fr the reference humidity value when adjusting the AirChip 3000. Frst pint gives the same results as dew pint fr values abve freezing. Limit the adjustment range: limits the effect f the humidity adjustment t a range that can be defined by either an upper r a lwer limit (fr example < 20 %RH r > 80 %RH). Adjustment has n effect utside f the range and all calibratin pints used fr the adjustment must be within the range. Temperature Reset prbe t Factry Adjustment: returns the AirChip 3000 t the factry default and reverts the effect f any adjustments made by the user. Erase all saved calibratin pints: deletes frm the AirChip 3000 memry all temperature calibratin pints that may be present and that have nt yet been used t adjust the AirChip 3000. Page 11 f 25 3.3 Humidity Upn pening the Prbe Adjustment frm, HW4 reads all humidity and temperature calibratin pints present in the AirChip 3000 memry. This frm prvides infrmatin bth n the mst recent factry adjustment and user adjustment. This infrmatin includes the values at which the AirChip 3000 device has been adjusted (up t 10 values).
Page 12 f 25 3.3.1 Humidity > Adjust This frm displays the currently measured humidity value and the trend. The = symbl means that the measurement is stable. The table n the right shws calibratin pints that are currently present in the AirChip 3000 memry. Reference value: When the measurement is stable, enter the reference humidity value in this bx Adjustment range: when the ptin t limit the adjustment range is enabled (see Settings and Tls), an additinal field appears belw the Reference value field. Enter the adjustment range as an upper (>) r lwer limit (<) symbl fllwed by a numerical value (n unit) Cmpensate RHS fr temperature: put a check mark in this bx when using a ROTRONIC humidity standard (RHS) t generate the reference humidity value. HW4 applies an autmatic crrectin fr the effect f temperature n the humidity generated by the RHS. Save Calibratin Pint: click n this link t save the calibratin pint t the AirChip 3000 memry. The calibratin pint appears in the table lcated t the right (maximum 100 pints). Any calibratin pint present in the table can be selected with a right muse click. This pens the small menu shwn belw:
Page 13 f 25 Calibratin Prtcl: when calibrating humidity as ppsed t adjusting humidity, click n this link t generate and save t the PC a calibratin prtcl with As-Fund data. The prtcl is a text file which can be printed. Adjust: click n this link t adjust humidity, based n the calibratin pints listed in the bx lcated t the right. After the adjustment, these calibratin pints are autmatically erased frm the AirChip 3000 memry. Depending n the HW4 Glbal Settings, an adjustment prtcl is autmatically generated after each adjustment (HW4 Main Menu Bar > Settings and Tls > HW4 Glbal Settings > Events Tab). Dew pint r frst pint as the reference value: HW4 ffers the ptin f using either the dew pint r the frst pint as the reference value. Fr values belw freezing, the user shuld determine whether the value given by the reference chilled mirrr instrument is a dew pint r a frst pint.
Page 14 f 25 Prir t recrding the calibratin pint, HW4 calculates the value f the reference relative humidity based bth n the dew r frst pint and n the temperature measured by the AirChip 3000 device. At values abve freezing, the dew pint and frst pint give the same results. IMPORTANT: The type f adjustment: 1-pint (ffset acrss the entire measuring range), tw pints (ffset and slpe) r 3 pints and mre (ffset, slpe and linearity) depends n the number f calibratin pints present in the AirChip 3000 memry prir t the adjustment. The humidity calibratin pints can be generated in any rder but it is recmmended t use an ascending sequence s as t minimize the effect f sensr shift as may result frm extended expsure f the sensr t high humidity.
Page 15 f 25 3.3.2 Humidity > Characteristic curve The humidity characteristic curve can be displayed either as a graph r as a table. The graph shws bth the factry and the current curves ver the range f 0 t 100 %RH. Raw humidity values cme directly frm the cunts generated by the humidity analg t digital cnverter. Linearized humidity values are valid at a temperature f 23 C.
Page 16 f 25 The table shws the crrectins that the AirChip 3000 applies t the raw humidity values based n the factry values (A1%) and n the data generated during user adjustments (A2%) All values are in %RH and are valid at a temperature f 23 C. The values frm clumns A1% and A2% are added t the raw humidity value. Ntes: Fr best accuracy, we recmmend adjusting the AirChip 3000 device at a temperature clse t 23 C, but ther temperature values may als be used. HW4 autmatically uses the temperature measured by the AirChip 3000 device and cmputes the values A2% fr a temperature f 23 C. Each successive user adjustment has an incremental effect n the values f clumn A2%. When the AirChip 3000 device is adjusted by the user, the values in clumn A2% are replaced with new values. These values are cmputed taking int accunt bth the values in clumn A1% (factry) and the values that were in clumn A2% prir t the adjustment. When the AirChip 3000 is reset t the factry data, all user generated crrectins (A2%) are set t zer.

The temperature calibratin pints can be generated in any rder D nt save t the prbe memry temperature values that are a mix f C and F
Page 19 f 25 3.4.2 Temperature > Characteristic curve The AirChip 3000 uses a 4 th degree plynmial t define the crrespndence between temperature [ C] and the resistance value f the Pt100 temperature sensr [Ohm]. The default factry values fr the plynmial cefficients are shwn abve. Fllwing a 2-pint temperature adjustment, bth the value R 0 and the cefficient A may be changed autmatically by HW4. The plynmial cefficients can als be changed manually by the user, but this shuld be dne nly when data has been develped at 3 f 4 temperature values. After changing ne r mre cefficients, the blue link Save new cefficients appears n the frm. Click n this link t write the new values t the AirChip 3000.
