Resort Information Montafon, Vorarlberg The Montafon region is located in Austria s prestigious Vorarlberg province, which borders Switzerland and is home to the 3,312m high peak of Piz Buin plus another 80 mountains which tower above 3,000m high. This area is the snowiest part of the Alps and is less than 50km from the village of Damüls - the world s snowiest village. The province is exceptionally unspoilt and receives three times as much snow as Chamonix and twice as much snow as St Anton and Val D Isère. So you can be sure of fantastic snow conditions in Montafon! Unsurprisingly, there is a great deal of high quality skiing on offer with over 200km of well groomed pistes to explore and a long skiing season. Intermediate skiers are particularly well catered for with a wide range of red pistes spread across the mountainside. Thanks to a large number of ski lifts, access to the pistes is also easy. The town is conveniently located only 1 hour 50 minutes from Zurich and Innsbruck airports and just 2 hours 40 minutes from Munich.
Winter Activities Winter & Skiing Montafon is one of the snowiest parts of the Alps making it a fantastic place to enjoy on and off piste skiing, snowboarding and a range of other winter activities. This corner of Austria receives three times as much snow as Chamonix and benefits from a long season stretching from early December until late April. Montafon offers a total of 246km of well groomed pistes, most of which are located between 1,600 and 2,400m. Thanks to the extensive pistes and snow-sure location, there is a wide range of skiing available, catering particularly well for intermediate skiers, along with great tobogganing and cross-country skiing. The Silvretta Montafon ski area includes a total of 66km of blue pistes, 55km of red pistes along with 10km of black pistes and 24km of freeriding routes. The region benefits from both family friendly pistes and gentle beginners slopes plus wide open runs for carving and much more challenging off piste descents. In addition you can enjoy deep snow skiing and some of Europe s best ski touring. Montafon is home to several long runs too including a 12km descent into St Gallenkirch which features a 1,700m drop in altitude and passes through the world s longest ski tunnel. Fans of cross-country skiing will also enjoy the 95km of cross-country skiing available and there are a further 29km of skating runs to explore. Access to the pistes is easy thanks to 64 modern lifts dotted around the mountainside including a new gondola in St Gallenkirch which was opened in the 2011/12 season. This efficient lift system has seen substantial recent investment and 61 of the lifts are covered by a single pass, meaning that you can easily ski around the mountains without needing to purchase multiple passes. For a change of scene you can always try out the several long toboggan runs available which stretch up to 7km long and include a 5.5km long illuminated night tobogganing run. Winter hiking and snowshoe walks offer another interesting way to explore the area.
Montafon - 246km skiing Après-Ski Montafon is also home to Austria s biggest snowpark, the Nova Park. This award winning park offers tons of jumps, kickers, rails, boxes and jibs plus an 120m half pipe. Furthermore, the Montafon region benefits from around 30 mountain restaurants which mostly offer welcoming sun terraces plus 11 ski huts, nine bars and a disco.
Summer Activities Summer Along with snowy winters, Montafon benefits from warm summers and makes a great summertime destination thanks to its many forests, beautiful riverside scenery and the wide range of hiking and biking trails on offer. Montafon benefits from 500km of scenic hiking trails through lush pastures and forests and past rustic Alpine farms. Hiking buses are even available to take you to the starting point for different hikes. There are also 860km of mountain bike routes to enjoy which include everything from easy-going trails to very challenging sections for serious mountain bikers. In addition you can explore the mountains on 28 mountain biking tours which are marked blue, red or black like ski pistes to determine how difficult they are. Extensive road cycling is also possible along the valleys. Another alternative available is canyoning where you can navigate Montafon s rivers, waterfalls and craggy canyons for a different view of the region. Or for something even more energetic, how about Europatreppe 4000, which is just 10 minutes from St Gallenkirch. Europatreppe features 4,000 steps up the mountainside making it the longest straight stairway in Europe and visitors are challenged with making their way to the top as quickly as possible; the current record is just over 20 minutes. A more relaxing option is a visit to Aquarena, a warm water swimming pool which caters for both children and adults. Children will also enjoy Smuggler s Land which follows the path that historic smugglers took over the mountains with their loot. Hugo s Mountain World also offers child-friendly hiking trails. Other activities available include llama trekking, rock climbing, canoeing and rafting, tennis, horse riding and paragliding. Montafon has two 9-hole golf courses which sit amongst impressive mountain scenery while nearby Bludenz is home to an 18-hole, par 68 course. With hay barns, grazing cattle and small streams dotted all around, this course stretches over 5,000m and offers golf lessons and a contemporary clubhouse with a panoramic terrace.
