Job Description Job Title: Reports To: Assistant Head of Department Head of Department Salary Point: BRK 42 39,305 Curriculum Department: Hours: Responsible for: Construction 37 hours per week Staff and students with the designated Curriculum Department Purpose of the Role: To support the Head of Department in the leadership and development of the strategic direction of the designated curriculum department. To maximise student participation and success rates and to ensure that all students within the designated curriculum department receive a consistently outstanding experience. To play a pro-active role in the delivery of Brooklands College s strategic aims and ambition to be Outstanding Every Day. The role requires leadership and management skills to support the Head of Department in the direction and performance management of staff. The Assistant Head of Department is expected to be an outstanding teaching and learning practitioner who will act as a role model to all other staff within the Curriculum Department and the wider College. The post holder is an integral part of the Curriculum Department s management team and will be expected to participate actively in initiatives that support the Curriculum Department s and the College s aims and ambitions. The Assistant Head of Department will manage their curriculum portfolio wherever it is delivered and meeting a need; be that on one of our campuses, out-centres or employer premises. The role will include a delivering a teaching commitment as defined annually by the College. Responsibilities and Accountabilities: 1. To support the Head of Department to ensure the designated Curriculum Department is managed effectively to meet all the relevant targets and objectives. 2. To contribute to budget planning and to lead the timetabling process within the Curriculum Department to maximise the efficient deployment of staff and other resources. 3. To contribute to the management and oversight of the self-assessment process and quality improvement plans according to College
requirements and deadlines, using it as a primary tool to identify areas for improvement and development. 4. To line manage designated staff within the Curriculum Department according to College processes and procedures, including induction, appraisal, informal capability and first level disciplinary. 5. To undertake observations of teaching and learning according to College policy. 6. To support the sharing of best practice within the Curriculum Department and across the College. 7. To identify areas of under-performance and to take action to bring about improvement. 8. To plan for and oversee the proper effective administration of courses and programmes including arrangements for admissions and induction, assessment, student support, work related experience and matters of student discipline according to College policy. 9. To ensure all external and internal verification and assessment policies and procedures are complied with throughout the department. 10. To work with the Head of Department and the Human Resources Department on the recruitment and deployment of staff. 11. To develop a curriculum that supports and maximises a diverse range of income streams including employer focused and full cost delivery. 12. To undertake a teaching commitment as defined annually by the College to meet the needs of the Curriculum Department. 13. To ensure that the Curriculum Department is responsive to the views of its students. 14. To use management information and data to monitor and improve the quality of provision. 15. To support the Head of Department in the effective communication with the Curriculum Department by ensuring that plans are shared and understood and that teams are engaged and motivated to play their part in driving the College s aims and ambitions. 16. To ensure Health and Safety policy and procedures are followed at all times and that health and safety practice is embedded throughout all aspects of the Curriculum Department and the College.
17. To ensure the safeguarding of students is understood and embedded throughout the Curriculum Department and the College. 18. Person Specification Job Title: Assistant Head of Department Education and Qualifications: Degree or equivalent vocational qualification PGCE or Certificate in Education Level 2 Maths and English Evidence of ongoing professional development Knowledge and Skills: A proven track record in achieving goals Relevant specialist knowledge of one or more of the curriculum areas within the designated Curriculum Department Experience of effective and efficient management or supervision of people and resources Outstanding teaching and learning skills and an understanding of the attributes of an outstanding teacher Knowledge and understanding of College processes and procedures for the management of students, quality and resources An awareness and understanding of contemporary curriculum and assessment developments An understanding of quality assurance in an FE context An awareness of the Government agenda for education, lifelong and community learning and development Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Internet and email) Personal attributes and competencies required: Ability to: Respond positively and efficiently to change Take ownership and accountability for tasks and actions Use own initiative and work with minimum supervision Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing Work co-operatively with others to achieve individual and collective goals
