1 Role Profile Role purpose: Reporting to the Care Home Manager, taking responsibility for the clinical management of a designated unit, to meet both health and social care needs of the resident group. Responsible as the Nurse in Charge of the Care Home ensuring effective operation of the service, in the absence of the Care Home Manager and the Deputy Care Home Manager. Line management of the Registered Nurses. Hours of work: Required hours will be stated on the job advert and will vary according to our needs and sites.
2 Duties 1. Management of holistic care from a person centred perspective. 2. Oversight of clinical practice within the unit/setting, role modelling best practice ensuring high standards and continuous improvement from the clinical care team. 3. Effective management of the team by implementing St Monica Trust s employment and staff development policies and procedures. 4. Practice within the legal and ethical framework as established by the NMC and national legislation, including the Health and Social Care Act 2008, to ensure residents interests and wellbeing are met. 5. Ensure that all relevant Health and Safety legislation is complied with in order to safeguard residents, workers and visitors to the Home. 6. Motivates and encourages self and others to achieve team and organisational goals. 7. Provide appropriate and effective leadership to the team. 8. In the absence of the Care Home Manager and/or Deputy Care Home Manager, take charge of the Care Home, managing the daily responsibilities. 9. To work as part of the hands on Registered Nursing team as a registered nurse for a number of shifts per week. Main Tasks 1. Develop, implement and review care plans, and maintain drugs records, Social Services reviews, Health and Safety records, ensuring compliance with the Trust s Data Protection Policy. 2. Provision of personal nursing care according to Activities of Daily Living (Roper, Tierney and Logan, 1985). 3. Empowering residents to take responsibility for their health, well-being and lifestyle, and encouraging residents to take part in decision making processes which affect them. 4. Assisting and supporting residents mobility, including using hoists, handling equipment, walking aids and wheelchairs, using good manual handling practice. 5. Ensure that service user s physical, social, cultural and spiritual needs are met. 6. Liaise closely with the Care Home Manager, GP and other professionals concerning residents' health and welfare and report and record any accident or change in condition. 7. To accept responsibility for the ordering, administration and recording of medicines/drugs and other supplies, ensuring their safe storage and maintaining adequate levels of stock. 8. To undertake, after suitable training, a range of nursing procedures, including: Venepuncture; Supra Pubic & Male Catheterisation, Immunisation etc.
3 9. Conduct supervision and appraisals for staff, and encourage, participate and assist in their continuing professional development to ensure continuing high standards of care. 10. Encourage special areas of interest and expertise amongst the nurses, ensuring that clinical standards are kept high and up to date at all times. 11. Oversee the induction process of new staff to the unit. 12. Maintain staff time and attendance records and staff development & appraisal records, ensuring compliance with the Trust s Data Protection Policy. 13. Implement recommendations and / or requirements made by CSCI. 14. Facilitate CSCI inspections. 15. Undertake workforce planning, including the skill-mix allocation of staff and sourcing of cover at short notice. 16. Take an active role in Recruitment & Selection, Disciplinary and Grievance Procedures as appropriate. 17. Manage the Safeguarding Adults Process. 18. Attend and contribute to some management meetings as appropriate. 19. Assessment of prospective residents for admission to the Care Home, as appropriate. 4 Qualifications Essential Desirable Registered Nurse (adult level 1) Recent evidence of meeting PREP requirements Facilitators Learning and Assessment in Practice Award Experience Essential Desirable Experience in care of older people or people with a disability and/or dementia Experience of wound prevention and management, pain management, end of life care, medical/surgical or orthopaedic nursing and progressive neurological disorders or in mental health care Development of quality assurance systems Carrying out risk assessments in relation to manual handling Managing others, to include providing direction, confronting and dealing with issues and implementing formal people management processes Implementing health and safety systems that manage risk to self and others Developing health and safety systems that manage risk to self and others Contributing to the development of practice policies and procedures Contributing to the strategic planning process Proven record of planning and implementing innovative practice and change Knowledge Essential Desirable Knowledge of NMC Standards for the Administration of Medicine Code of Professional Conduct Standards of records and record keeping Good practice in relation to protection of vulnerable adults Managing the protection of vulnerable adults process Care Standards Act and CQC Essential Standards of Quality and Care Additional information Duties must be carried out in compliance with St Monica Trust s Equality and Diversity Policy. There will from time to time be a variation of duties depending on residents and units needs.
