1 DORMANSTOWN PRIMARY ACADEMY WELFARE LEAD JOB PURPOSE To provide a comprehensive coverage of daily operations involving welfare, safety and oversight of student pastoral care including punctuality, attendance, behaviour and achievement. As Welfare Lead, you will play a vital role in the running of systems that provide care and support for students. The aim of this intervention is to break down barriers to learning by liaising closely with all academy staff, parents and carers as well as partner agencies. Specifically, this will include: Maintaining a range of hand written and electronic academy records and data relating to pupil attendance and welfare records. Working with parents to help them understand and fulfil their responsibilities in relation to academy attendance. Monitoring and evaluating attendance and punctuality data in order to review the success of academy policies and any initiatives designed to improve the attendance and punctuality of children. Supporting the academy in fulfilling its statutory duties in relation to attendance and be capable of instigating legal action following appropriate protocols. Undertaking investigations commensurate with the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984 and the Codes of Practice thereto, and provide the best evidence as necessary for court action Maintaining regular contact, and constructive relationships, with families/carers of children in need of extra support, to keep them informed of the child s needs and progress and to encourage positive family support and Involvement. Providing accurate reports and analysis as requested by a range of internal and external audiences. Undertaking attendance/registration inspection and whole school audits. Liaising with the senior leaders with particular reference to vulnerable students, attendance, children in care, FSM etc. Leading referrals to outside agencies. Liaising with parents as required, regarding welfare issues (regular and unannounced home visits are an essential task of the job). Proactively liaising with external agencies involved with the welfare of young people. Acting as the lead professional, where appropriate, and provide support to children, families and other professionals. Acting as the Academy s Designated Person for Safeguarding (Child Protection) as outlined in Working Together to Safeguard Children (DfE, 2013)
2 Undertaking duties commensurate with the Safeguarding agenda for children including representing the academy at Child Protection meetings and conferences in order to contribute to quorate decision making. Managing the transfer of children in and out of the academy and any information related to this. Meeting with parents of children entering the academy to establish relationships and share academy expectations. Communicating and advising staff of the procedures and rules necessary for the correct functioning of the attendance system to ensure adherence to the academy s policies and processes. Monitoring academy code of dress and taking action where appropriate. Liaising with primary schools/academies including visits and presentations and managing transition issues as appropriate. Monitoring, keeping records of, and producing reports on behaviour, rewards and sanctions. Keeping abreast of developments in the pastoral care of young people. Oversee children s responsibilities and support the work of the academy council. Actively promote the SMSC agenda in the academy. Overseeing student lunchtime activities and line managing the lunchtime supervisory staff. Maintaining confidential records. Promoting student involvement in extra-curricular activities. Developing 1:1 mentoring relationship with children needing particular support in overcoming barriers to learning. Developing and maintaining a thorough knowledge and appreciation of the range of services, activities, courses, opportunities, organisations and individuals that could be drawn upon to provide extra support for children and provide that information to academy leaders, students and parents/carers where appropriate. Supporting academy leaders in ensuring the safety and security of the site. Keeping policies and procedures up to date in accordance with academy policy, best practice and current legislation. Undertaking such training that might be required in order to carry out the duties of the post effectively. Complying with the requirements of health and safety, data protection, and other relevant legislative or school policy documentation. To be aware of, and adhere to. applicable rules, regulations, legislation and procedures including the schools Equal Opportunities Policy and Code of Conduct, national legislation (including Health and Safety, Data Protection). Car owner essential, as is a willingness to work outside normal hours if necessary.
