Issue 3, April 2014 MICA Field Trip: Screen Paintings of Baltimore 8th Grade Students Visit MICA and the Screen Painting Exhibit ByMeganThompson,8 4 WhenmyclassfromtheBaltimoreDesignSchool wenttomicaforthescreenpaintingexhibitwe learnedaboutthehistoryofscreenpainting.we learnedthatitbeganinthe18thcenturyin Europewhenonlyrichpeopleownedscreensand theyhadtopainttheirscreenstokeepthem fromrusting.butwhenitwasdiscoveredthat somemosquitoescarrymalaria,havingscreens becameamatterofpublichealth.thenin1913 whenwilliamoktavecpaintedhisgrocerystores doors,screenpaintingcametobaltimore.then manyartistsbeganteachingthemselvesscreen paintingsoitcontinuedevenafterhisdeath. Afterwewentthroughthegallerywewatcheda documentarybyms.eff,whichreinforcedwhatwe hadlearnedinthegallery.itwasamazingtosee howthetechniquesvariedfromartisttoartist.
