1 Dear Nursing Student, Congratulations on your acceptance into the Connecticut Community College Nursing program. Please be sure to download all documents from my.commnet (Acceptance letter, Candidate Reply Forms, etc.) and return well in advance of any due dates listed. All new nursing students will have a mandatory meeting in mid-june and will meet the nursing faculty and go over every aspect of the program Please take the time to look over all the information below that will prepare you to speak with a Counselor about your next steps! Tuition, Fees and Payment: 1. Please remember, payment is due at the time of registration. Applying for financial aid is an additional and separate procedure from applying for admission to the College and, because processing takes several weeks, should be completed as soon as possible before the semester begins. 2. Tuition and fees must be paid in full at the time of registration unless the student has: a. received an award letter from the CCC Financial Aid Office; or b. written agency/company authorization; or c. utilized the Installment Plan Option with the Business Office You do not have to register immediately, if you need time to work out paying for your tuition, a seat has been reserved for you** and you have until June 12 th to register and pay (however, it is NEVER advisable to wait until the very last minute). **If needed, you must still register for Psy 111, Bio 235 and have payment ready, these courses are not reserved for you and are on a first come, first serve basis. You will be required to wait until you finish this course and produce a transcript with confirmation of your grade before you can register. Students will not be given the opportunity to take this course in summer should they not pass in Spring If you do not successfully complete this course and produce a transcript by June 1 st, 2013, you will forfeit your seat and must reapply the following year as a new student.

3 I have not completed an Introductory Psychology course (Psy 111). If you have not completed an Intro Psychology course, you are required to either register for it along with your Nursing 101 or take the course as a Summer Session class (recommended). Failure to take or successfully pass this class (with a C or better) by December, 2013 will result in you not being able to continue in the Nursing Program. Due to clinical times, when registering for class, you must choose a class from the following times:

4 Mondays after 12:30 pm Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday after 7:00 pm Friday after 12:30 pm Saturday (anytime) Any online course that does not require you to be on campus for the above times. Please refer to the following link for information on summer classes and tuition costs:

5 I have not yet completed a Microbiology class (Bio 235) If you have not completed Microbiology, you are required to either register for it along with your Nursing 101 or take the course as a Summer Session class (recommended*). Failure to take or successfully pass this class (with a C or better) by December, 2013 will result in your not being able to continue in the Nursing Program. *This is a very difficult course to take with your first semester of nursing. If you do not pass this course in Fall 2013, you will NOT advance in your nursing classes. For this reason we strongly recommend taking the course in summer session. **Register as early as you can since these classes tend to fill VERY QUICKLY in the summer and fall. 11 I am a licensed LPN looking for the Bridge Program LPN students can be waived from up to one year of the nursing program (This is done in consultation with your clinical advisor). LPN s accepted for Fall, 2013, take an online class offered by Charter Oak State College the first year and enter the last year of the nursing program from LPN s will meet with their LPN Advisor at the orientation in June to discuss this further. 12 General questions about Clinical, Hours, Locations, etc

13 In June you will have an all-day orientation of all 160 nursing students where every aspect of your upcoming program will be presented by the entire nursing faculty. Here are some FAQ you may have until that date. Frequently asked questions and answers to the Nursing Program 1. How many days would I be coming to Capital once I start the nursing program? The nursing class is 2 days a week, Monday and Friday, 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. for the first semester. Also, the first semester for freshmen consists of 7 weeks in the lab on the 8 th floor. Lab days are Tuesday and Wednesday, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. After 7 weeks, students are assigned 2 clinical days per week. Clinical schedule is Tuesday/Wednesday, Wednesday/Thursday or Saturday/Sunday. Clinical day schedule is 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and evening is 2:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. Evening rotations occur on Tuesday/Wednesday or Wednesday/Thursday. The weekend clinical is 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. 2. Does a student select clinical schedules? No, the clinical assignments are made by the course leader of the particular semester. 3. What grade does a student maintain to be in good academic standing in the nursing program? A student must have an average of at least 74% and be passing in clinical. CCC has an early alert system that notifies a student when they slip below the 74%. A nursing tutor is available on Monday and/or Friday to assist students with review of course content. 4. What sites does CCC use for clinical student assignments? Examples of clinical sites are Hospital of Central Connecticut, Manchester Memorial Hospital, Rockville General Hospital, Bristol Hospital, Hartford Hospital and area convalescent homes. 5. How many hours can a student work once they start the nursing program? A student can work between hours per week. Every student needs to make a work schedule adjustment when they are facing an exam in order that they are adequately prepared for the exam. Full time employment during the semester can affect the ability to successfully pass the nursing course due to stress and exhaustion. 6. Does CNA training or work as an operating room technician reduce the number of nursing semesters in the program?

14 No, the only training that can reduce the number of nursing semesters is the LPN Bridge program. 7. Is a student allowed to transfer from one Connecticut Community College Nursing Program to another if they are passing the current nursing semester? A student can transfer to another Connecticut Community College if a college has space in the upcoming semester s class and the student has maintained a 3.0 average. The student must also be passing in clinical. 8. Are CLEP tests accepted by CT-CCNP? CLEP tests are accepted by the CT-CCNP Sites are University of Hartford, Bloomfield Ave., West Hartford, CT and Charter Oak College located on the campus of Central Connecticut State University, Stanley St., New Britain, CT. CT-CCNP accepts CLEP in English Composition, Psychology, Sociology, Literature, Languages usually Spanish or French, college level Intermediate Algebra, and Humanities. Students who plan to take CLEP exams should be well read in the subject area as the exams are difficult. CLEP results are sent directly to the Registrar at Capital Community College.
