Reslving Perfrmance Prblems 5. General Ntes 1. Intrductin Micrsft Windws Terminal Services extends the mdel f distributed cmputing by allwing PCs t perate in a server-based cmputing envirnment. When running Terminal Services, client applicatins and data prcessing/data strage peratins are executed n the server. Terminal Services is a cmpnent f Windws 2003/2008 Server. Applicatins and user desktps are transmitted ver the netwrk via remte desktp prtcl (RDP) and displayed via remte desktp client sftware. Similarly, print streams, keybard input, and muse clicks are als transmitted ver the netwrk between the server and the remte desktp client sftware. Each user lgs n t the Terminal Server envirnment and sees nly his r her individual sessin. Each sessin is managed transparently by the server perating system and is independent f any ther client sessins. Citrix MetaFrame is a third-party add-n layer t Micrsft Windws Terminal Services frm Citrix Systems, Inc. It incrprates the Citrix Independent Cmputing Architecture (ICA) prtcl and prvides extended capabilities fr client devices, netwrk cnnectins, and lcal system resurces. T clarify the terminlgy, Terminal Server is a multi-user server cre that prvides the ability t hst multiple, simultaneus client sessins n Windws 2003/2008. Terminal Server architecture is the fundatin fr add-n prducts such as the Citrix MetaFrame envirnment. Citrix MetaFrame envirnment is nt pssible withut first enabling and licensing the server cre t supprt Terminal Services. Any applicatin that is supprted in the Terminal Server envirnment shuld wrk unchanged in the add-n Citrix envirnment. Supprt fr Citrix-specific issues shuld be reslved with Citrix technical supprt befre cntacting U2 technical supprt.
2. SBClient Cmpatibility Infrmatin SBClient 6 has been tested n Micrsft Windws 2003/2008 with Terminal Server Rle enabled. The fllwing functinality has been verified t wrk as expected: Installatin and licensing Cnnectivity cnfiguratin t lcal and remte hsts GUI cmpnents ActiveX + HTML+ SBX Smart Query and utput t Wrd r Excel File uplads and dwnlads using PD.LO/PD.LI Cnnecting SBClient as a published applicatin Device licensing SBCOM Scripts Saving.sbc sessins n the Windws desktp File uplads and dwnlads using PD.LO/PD.LI With Citrix MetaFrame, it is pssible t specify the lcal hard drive frm which the client cnnectin is initiated, as well as the disk drive n the server. Check the drive letter assignment in "My Cmputer" frm the ICA client. Nte: Yu can expect a slw transfer rate if yu specify the lcal hard drive because the data must first be transferred t the Citrix server and then t the lcal hard drive. SBClient as a published applicatin Micrsft Windws Terminal Services can prvide users with access t a single published applicatin when access t a full Micrsft Windws desktp is nt required. SBClient can wrk as a published applicatin in this cntext. Yu can set up SBClient as a published applicatin in the Citrix Published Applicatin Manager n the server. T set up a new published applicatin, use the Define the Applicatin dialg bx. Make sure t specify the full path f sbclient.exe. It is best t click the Brwse buttn and select the sbclient.exe by brwsing t it. This autmatically puts the full path f bth Cmmand Line and Wrking Directry in the prper place.
The default paths are as fllws: Cmmand Line: C:\U2\SBClient6\sbpen\BIN\sbclient.exe Wrking Directry: C:\U2\SBClient6\sbpen\BIN When yu pen Citrix Prgram Neighbrhd n the client PC, yu will find SBClient as an ptin t start as a published applicatin. If nt, add it as such. Saving.sbc sessins n the Windws desktp Yu cannt cpy.sbc sessins frm ne user t anther because f wnership and permissins. In fact, we d nt recmmend using.sbc sessin files in the Terminal Server envirnment because certain infrmatin is hard-cded when the sessin file is saved, and this can lead t prblems. 3. SBClient Terminal Server Installatin Instructins 3.1 Imprtant Ntes Terminal Services needs t be in Applicatin mde r Installatin mde befre installing SBClient. Please refer t dcumentatin n installatin f shared applicatins in a Terminal Server envirnment fr the specific Terminal Services versins yu are installing. Due t varius limitatins, it is nt pssible t uninstall SBClient r its user accunts frm Micrsft Windws Terminal Services. Yu must uninstall manually by deleting all related items in the registry, the Prgram Files directry, and the Dcuments and Settings directry fr each user. 3.2 Installatin Installing SBClient 6 n Micrsft Windws Terminal Services is nw significantly easier than in previus versins. 1. Lg n t Micrsft Windws Terminal Services as Administratr. Ensure that Terminal Services is in Applicatin r Installatin mde befre cntinuing with the installatin. 2. D nt run the SBClient setup.exe file directly frm its surce lcatin. Refer t yur Windws Terminal Server dcumentatin t launch the installatin.
3. D nt select the ptin t run SBClient Manager autmatically. Using this ptin prduces the message "TU is an invalid accunt" n sites where the user lgs n t multiple machines. 4. After installatin is cmplete, the Terminal Services clients d nt need t perfrm any further installatin steps. They need nly start SBClient by clicking n the SBClient icn (shrtcut) in the SBClient prgram grup, which is available t all users. The first time a user runs SBClient, the necessary installatin steps are perfrmed autmatically with n user interventin. 4. Reslving Perfrmance Prblems If yu shuld experience perfrmance prblems with SBClient n Micrsft Windws Terminal Services, please check the fllwing: Ensure that all f yur users sessin cnfiguratins are set up fr the file transfer prtcl f Netwrk Cpy (if yur hst is n Windws) r FTP (if yur hst is n UNIX). Frm the SBClient menu, select Setup > File Transfer and change the default setting f SBZ t Netwrk Cpy (fr Windws) r FTP (fr UNIX). Save this change by selecting File > Save Cnfiguratin. Yu can als experiment with tw registry settings, as detailed belw. The lcatin f the registry entry depends n whether yu are running a 32-bit r 64- bit versin f Windws. 32-bit Windws: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Rcket Sftware\SBClient 64-bit Windws: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Ww6432Nde\Rcket Sftware\SBClient Sleeptime (default value 10). The Sleeptime value determines the number f millisecnds an SBClient thread will wait befre checking the scket fr incming data. Plltime (default value 0). The Plltime value determines the amunt f time SBClient will pll the scket lking fr incming data. The time is calculated by 1/Plltime, s a Plltime f 1 will pll fr 1 secnd, a Plltime f 10 will pll fr 100 millisecnds, and a Plltime f 0 will result in n plling.
5. General Ntes Always enable Terminal Services n a server installed n an NTFS file system partitin, as NTFS prvides the security necessary fr users in a multi-sessin envirnment. Terminal Services prvides tw ptins when clsing a client: discnnect r lg ff. Discnnect - Using discnnect leaves the sessin running n the server, meaning yu can recnnect t the server and resume the sessin. If yu are running a task n the server, such as a time-cnsuming database query, yu can start the task and discnnect frm the sessin. Later n, yu can lg n t the server again, re-enter the sessin, and either resume the task r check the results. This is especially helpful when perating ver a remte access cnnectin n a lng-distance tll line. Netwrk administratrs can limit the amunt f time a discnnected sessin is allwed t be left n the server. Check with yur administratr fr infrmatin abut limits t the length f sessins. Lgging Off - Ending the sessin is knwn as lgging ff, which cmpletely terminates the sessin running n the server. Any applicatins running within the sessin are clsed and unsaved changes made t pen files are lst. The next time the user lgs n t the server, a new sessin is created. Nte: When users leave discnnected sessins running, they may receive the errr message TU is nt a valid accunt when recnnecting and launching SBClient. This ccurs when Terminal Services cannt determine the riginal sessin t recnnect t, and creates a secnd sessin with the same user credentials. The secnd sessin cannt access the shared SBClient applicatin files and will fail.
