Introduction We would like to introduce you to the 72 nd Tour of Somerville Cycling Series. Since 1940, Memorial Day in Somerville, New Jersey has become synonymous with the Tour of Somerville. As the oldest continuously run major bicycle race in the United States (except for the 3 years not run during World War II), this event is regarded as the Kentucky Derby of Cycling and is one of the most prestigious cycling events in America. Thousands of people from all over the nation converge in Somerset County to cheer on the cyclists. Free admission encourages the spectators to stroll the streets enjoying the kids activities, music, entertainment, and great food. The Cycling Series attracts over 600 professional and amateur cyclists, including former Olympians and cyclists from around the world. The professional competitors in Monday s feature race average speeds up to 40 mph in an exciting 50-mile race. Read on to discover how sponsors benefit from this event.
A Community Event The Tour of Somerville Cycling Series is more than just a cycling event it celebrates community. Honoring service. We honor American service men and women as part of this Memorial Day tribute. In fact, the feature race bears the name of two former winners who lost their lives during World War II. Festival atmosphere. Throughout the weekend, over 10,000 people line the streets to watch the incredibly fast action and stroll around enjoying the day s entertainment, which ranges from family fun rides, food stands, live bands and music, extreme sports demonstrations, vendors, kids activities and more. Proceeds benefit charity. Proceeds from the event will support Arts on Division, a non-profit corporation that supports and promotes art and cultural events within the community. The event will also help Middle Earth, a local non-profit that serves youth and their families for over 40 years. Volunteers. The entire event is run by volunteers and people who care about and take pride in their community. Healthy Partnerships. Tour of Somerville Cycling Series This exciting three-day event offers ample opportunity to market your organization and/or business and showcase your products and services to the riders and spectators. The events are as follows: Saturday s Raritan Cycling Classic May 23, 2015 at 9 a.m. Professional and category 1 and 2 riders participate in a 75-mile road race that moves through 13 municipalities on County and local roads. Masters and lower category riders compete in four races on a short race course that traverses downtown Raritan. Sunday s Bound Brook Criterium May 24, 2015 at 1:30 p.m. All levels of riders, from juniors to professionals, compete in four different races on a short race course passing the middle and high schools of Bound Brook. Monday s Tour of Somerville May 25, 2015 at 10:45 a.m. Six different races take place in the heart of Somerville to challenge all different levels of riders. The day culminates with the 50-mile Tour race where professionals compete for a $15,000 purse. Heading into its 72nd year, the Tour is the oldest continuously run major bicycle event in the United States and features the nation s best riders.
