Culture is the shared values, traditins, nrms, custms, arts, histry, flklre and institutins f a grup f peple. It is determined by such factrs as ethnicity, gegraphy, age, sciecnmic status, religin, gender, sexual rientatin, educatin, and language. Culture cntributes t a persn s sense f self in relatin t thers; experiences in the wrld; and the influences n decisins and actins. Achieving cultural cmpetence is a lifelng prcess that includes the examinatin f persnal attitudes and desires; the acquisitin f relevant knwledge; and the develpment f skills that facilitate wrking effectively with individuals and grups wh are culturally diverse. The visin t acquire cultural cmpetency shuld be manifested at every level f an rganizatin, including plicy making, administratin and practice. This visin shuld be reflected in the attitudes, structures, plicies, and services f the rganizatin. With ur grwing culturally diverse sciety, the delivery f services that are culturally sensitive and cmpetent has becme a pririty. Therefre, rganizatins must becme knwledgeable f and value issues related t respecting and acknwledging the cllective diversity and racial/ethnic differences in the service delivery ppulatin. Cultural cmpetency is a frm f scial intelligence with fur cmpnents: 1. AWARENESS - the ability t recgnize ne s wn reactins t peple wh are different, as well as understanding the implicatins f these reactins fr effective interactin with thers. 2. ATTITUDE ne s values and beliefs abut differences amng individuals r grups. 3. KNOWLEDGE ne s understanding f the facts abut individual r grups. 4. STEPS TO CULTURAL COMPETENCY The recgnitin and acceptance that all cultures have a prfund influence in ur lives. The persnal awareness that ppressin is pervasive in ur sciety. It is a part f ur cllective histry and des affects ur relatins and interactins with each ther. The acceptance that there are cultural differences that all need t learn t respect, even thugh there may be aspects that are nt always understd. Having the humility t accept that we d nt knw everything abut ther cultures, and never will. Therefre, ne needs t cntinually strive t learn what we need t knw abut the grups that are interacted with. A willingness t pursue infrmatin and knwledge abut ther grups via methds that are available. When unable r cmplete the steps listed abve, having the curage t identify and cnfrnt any persnal resistance, anger and especially fears that may in interfere with ne s ability t acknwledge, respect r effectively interact with ther individuals r grups. ALWAYS: Recgnize that culturally cmpetency training is necessary, but nt slely sufficient t accmplish cultural cmpetency. Recgnize the gal f cultural cmpetence training t cntinually strive t reach a prgressively higher state f cmpetence, but the learning and the applicatin f knwledge and skills btained during training and experiences is a lifelng prcess.
