Curse Descriptin This seminar examines selected tpics in administratin in the health care sectr. The curse examines brad cntemprary tpics as well as traditinal and rutine management infrmatin systems emplyed in the health care sectr. The fcus is n rganized delivery systems, particularly the rle f the hspital as the center piece f the health care envirnment. II. III. Prerequisites Students are expected t have a wrking knwledge f rganizatinal and management principles acquired either thrugh experience within the business wrld, public sectr, r thrugh the cmpletin f apprpriate academic curses. Effective cmmunicatin skills at a level expected f thse wh have earned a bachelr's degree. Learning Outcmes The bjective f the curse is t give students an in-depth understanding f health care management infrmatin systems, financing, mdes f health care delivery, quality measures, and ther tpics. At the cnclusin f this curse, the student shuld have: An understanding f the U.S. health care delivery system, including the majr public and private health care prgrams Knwledge f the public and private decisin making prcesses fr determining insurance cverage and payment f health care services Knwledge f the quality assurance and imprvement measures emplyed in the health care system An appreciatin fr the imprtance f unifrm billing, cding, and data cllectin systems An understanding f the impact f health care technlgy n the cst and delivery f health care services. 1

2 IV. Curse Methdlgy and Plicy This curse uses a seminar frmat t facilitate the exchange f ideas n selected tpics. The curse tpics will be cnveyed thrugh lectures, films, student presentatins, and grup discussins. Each student will be required t make ral presentatin and t lead class discussins n assigned readings. Students are encuraged t participate extensively, t ask questins, express yur pinins, and t challenge ideas and cncepts. My teaching methdlgy attempts t tap the experience f students t emphasize the practical applicatin f theries in the real wrld. Als, I emphasize critical thinking, prblem slving, and reasning ver memrizatin. The intent is t prvide students with a practical understanding f management and human behavir by relating curse materials t acquired experience in health care rganizatins. V. Required Text Bks and Instructinal Materials One required textbk has been adpted fr this curse. Fr yur cnvenience, the bk is available thrugh the TSU Bk Stre. 3 1. Presentatin(s) / Class Participatin A separate dcument will be prvided that gives guidance n the preparatin and delivery f class presentatins. Each student s curse participatin grade will als be based n the instructr s assessment f the quality f their cntributin t the learning experiences f all curse participants. A high participatin grade may be earned by asking text-infrmed questins abut the tpic under class discussin. Simply attending classes will nt earn participatin credit. Exchanges will be rderly, cperative, and infrmed. 2. Examinatins - Three (3) examinatins are scheduled, ne at the cnclusin f each majr curse cmpnent. The examinatins will cver all curse material and assigned readings during their respective perids. Please nte that the examinatins may include assigned readings that have nt been specifically discussed during class. Students with an unexcused absence frm a scheduled examinatin may be subject t a 5% grade penalty n the examinatin. 3. Attendance - Students are expected t attend class n a regular basis. Please ntify the instructr if yu expect t be absent frm class. Accrding t the University s plicy, students wh d nt regularly attend class r stp attending class will be assigned a final grade f F r W (unfficial withdrawal). VII. Lying - The willful and knwledgeable telling f an untruth r falsehd as well as any frm f deceit, attempted deceptin, r fraud in an ral r written statement relating t academic wrk. 4. Stealing - The taking r apprpriating, withut the right r permissin t d s, f academic r persnal pssessins with the intent t keep r t make use f wrngfully. 3
