Technical Manager at The Beacon Background The Beacon Arts Centre, opened in January 2013, is one of the finest new arts venues in the UK. The Beacon is situated at Custom House Quay in Greenock and overlooks the River Clyde estuary towards the hills of Argyll and Dunbartonshire. The Beacon has two performance spaces, together with a bistro/bar and 3 large function/rehearsal rooms which can be extended to provide a function suite for up to 170 guests. The Beacon s Theatre has one of the largest stage to audience ratios in Scotland. It is fully equipped, including a full height fly tower with counterweight system, two trap doors, retractable orchestra pit and generous wing space. The Theatre can accommodate 500 patrons over three levels. Our studio can seat 128 people on retractable bleacher seating and is an adaptable black box space which can be used end stage, in the round, cabaret etc. The Beacon is a significant new addition to the Scottish theatre and arts scene and is a venue of choice for touring productions as well as being a vibrant hub for the local community theatre groups. Purpose You will be responsible for the staging and technical elements of the Theatre s cultural, community and conference programme. You will ensure compliance with all statutory licences, undertakings and obligations in relation to the Theatre in conjunction with the General Manager. The Beacon currently operates a policy of mixed programming, mostly visiting company work with some co-producing covering musical theatre, drama, music, dance, comedy and community based activities. The pantomime is produced in house. The Beacon operates a busy programme of youth theatre, youth dance and community activities. Organisational relationships Your line manager is the General Manager. You will be responsible for managing resident technical staff and any project specific technical/production staff, volunteers as well as any casual stage crew. Duties and Responsibilities Production and Technical For any in-house productions, Beacon youth companies, education activities, visiting productions and events, co-productions, tours and transfers: To liaise with all visiting companies and co-production partners to ensure that all production, technical and stage elements of the production are effectively delivered. To schedule & supervise the staff working on the production, to make best use of their time within the parameters of their contracted agreement. To be available for production planning meetings, get-ins, get-outs and performances as required. To encourage good work within the Beacon and to maintain high production values. Staffing Management and leadership for all production, technical and stage staff including stage management, technical team, wardrobe, workshop team, stage casuals and crew: To recruit & manage permanent and casual staff as required To manage all department staff and volunteers as required

To administer the running of all production, technical and stage management activities, providing schedules, budgets, time-sheets, as required To promote good working practice within the departments To assess the training requirements of staff and provide in-house training wherever possible To source and liaise with all outside agencies necessary to the realisation of the production, technical and stage requirements of the production Health & Safety To be familiar with current Health & Safety regulations relevant to the industry and to keep abreast of changes to such regulations. To ensure that working practises throughout the building adhere to the in-house Health & Safety policy and with Health & Safety regulations generally. To notify the General Manager of any Health & Safety issues that arise. To provide risk assessments for the production and stage elements of each production and event and general risk assessments for specific areas of work within the departments. To provide and maintain COSHH and Health & Safety records relevant to the departments. To be a member of the Health & Safety committee and attend Health & Safety meetings as required. To liaise with the General Manager regarding building Health & Safety issues. General To ensure the regular upkeep and maintenance of production, technical and stage equipment, including annual inspections, PAT and regular maintenance. To keep a record of equipment and the maintenance thereof. To liaise with the General Manager regarding building issues such as building repairs & maintenance. To attend HOD, Health & Safety and Staff Meetings as required. To take an active role in the theatre s staff team as a whole, and contribute towards fulfilling the creative and operational aspirations of the company. To support the learning of young people participating as Beacon Youth Technical volunteers. Responsibilities as a Line Manager With the management team, to devise and oversee departmental policies and practices, and to encourage the involvement of all staff as appropriate. To provide information, advice, support, guidance and training to ensure that staff can maximise their potential and their input to The Beacon. To ensure that all staff have a clear understanding of the aims of The Beacon and of the standards expected from their work. To liaise with other managers to ensure the smooth running of The Beacon and the maximising of its potential. As a budget holder, to follow company guidelines and procedures for agreeing, monitoring and accounting for departmental budgets As a line manager, to ensure the wellbeing, motivation, professional development and satisfactory conduct of staff. Responsibilities of all staff members To be aware of the work of other departments in the achievement of The Beacon s aims. To take an active part in communicating and co-operating with other staff and departments.

To follow guidelines, procedures and policies provided by the company in relation to financial management and personnel records. To take an active part in achieving high standards of customer and client care. Terms & Conditions Full-time (40 hours per week). Evening and weekend work will be required. Overtime is not payable.
