Document ID: SLST Circular 10-15 Department: Lifesaving Audience: Regional Lifesaving Committees, Lifesaving Managers, Trainer and Assessors and Interested Members Summary: Registrations are being sought from members wishing to participate in the T&A Course on 6-8 th June 2015 SLSA Trainers & Assessors Course Saturday 6 th to Lunchtime Monday 8 th June 2015 (2.5 full days) State Centre, Hobart (5 Franklin Wharf, Hobart, 7000) Cost: $50 Registrations are being sought from interested members wanting to up skill in a training capacity. Once again our colleague Andrew Chubb (also known as Chubby) from Palm Beach SLSC (Surf Life Saving South New South Wales) has kindly offered to assist SLST in being able to provide training opportunities for those wishing to become a new trainer, a new Assessor, or both. Existing Trainers and Assessors may also wish to use this training for Personal Development. From this potential Facilitators to run future Trainer and Assessor Courses will be identified. Course Overview The schedule for the 3- days is yet to be confirmed, as this will be determined by the experience and training needs of the candidates to register. It is anticipated that a candidate that completes the course will come away with a Training Officers Certificate (TOC) or/ and an Assessors Award. The course will be delivered as combined content. However, members with an existing award are still encouraged to attend for personal development purposes. Please see Syllabus that follows for full details. The course will include; Trainers Upgrade - Upgrade from any past training qualifications to the new training qualification Assessors Upgrade - Upgrade from any past assessing qualifications to the new assessor qualification New Training Officers & Assessors Course For anyone that would like to become a Training Officer and/ Assessor but has had no prior training qualification This course includes theoretical and practical content Course Pre- requisites (See. Below flowchart) To become a Trainer you must be 16 years old and over To become a Assessor you must be 18 years old and over NB: Before you can train in an award, you must be proficient in the award in which you wish to deliver Recognition of prior Learning If you feel confident you already have some of the skills delivered in this course, please let Leanne know and RPL may be applied. If you have already attained the unit of competency you may be eligible for credit transfer. TO BECOME A TRAINING OFFICER AND/OR ASSESSOR FOR SURF LIFE SAVING SA AND TAS Gain the relevant award e.g. Bronze Medallion, IRB Driver etc Become an experienced holder of the award Spend time patrolling, driving, practicing awards to become experienced and proficient Gain relevant Training Officer qualification, related to the award held and to be trained Attend Training Officer Course, or apply for Recognition of Prior Learning Train a number of squads, initially under supervision of a qualified trainer, then taking responsibility for squad Qualified Training Officer Gain relevant Assessor qualification, related to the Training Officer awards held Attend Assessor Course, or apply for Recognition of Prior Learning Carry out three probationary assessments under supervision of qualified assessor, taking more responsibility each time Qualified Assessor

TRAINING OFFICER CERTIFICATE AWARD SUMMARY The aim of this course is to provide participants with the skills, knowledge and experience to deliver quality training of Surf Life Saving awards. This is a pre-requisite to being a trainer in Surf Life Saving awards. UNIT/S OF COMPETENCY TAEDEL301A Provide work skill instruction BSBCMM401A Make a presentation PRE-REQUISITES Candidates must be at least 16 years of age on the date of final assessment. Note: Before you can train in an award, you must be proficient in the award in which you wish to deliver training and be endorsed as a trainer in that award by your state. Prior to attempting this course, you will need to confirm with your local branch/state Centre the requirements for application and endorsement as a Surf Life Saving Training Officer. RPL AND CREDIT TRANSFER Candidates who believe they already possess some or all of the skills and knowledge of this award, or who have received one or more of the related units of competency, may wish to apply for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) or Credit Transfer. These candidates should consult their Training Officer or State Centre for more information. WHO CAN TRAIN? TRAINING OFFICER CERTIFICATE ASSESSMENT Assessment is through demonstration, presentation and application of all elements of competency in the workplace. Participants will be required to complete activities that may include role-plays, oral and written questioning, practical demonstrations and performing scenarios. Participants shall be encouraged to self assess in preparation for further formative and summative assessment. PROFICIENCY REQUIREMENTS There are no proficiency requirements for this award, however, trainers must hold and remain proficient in the award in which they are delivering training where that award specifies that proficiency is required. ASSESSOR CERTIFICATE AWARD SUMMARY The aim of this course is to provide participants with the skills, knowledge and experience to competently assess surf life saving awards and nationally recognised qualifications. UNIT/S OF COMPETENCY TAEASS401B Plan assessment activities and processes TAEASS402B Assess competence TAEASS403B Participate in assessment validation PRE-REQUISITES Candidates must meet ALL of the following conditions: be at least 18 years of age on the date of final assessment hold the SLSA award that they wish to assess, but do not have to be proficient in that award unless proficiency is stipulated in the syllabus document for that particular award. RPL AND CREDIT TRANSFER Candidates who believe they already possess some or all of the skills and knowledge of this award, or who have received one or more of the related units of competency, may wish to apply for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) or Credit Transfer.
