2 Introduction What is Assessment? Assessment is the process of forming and recording a judgement about a person s skills and knowledge. Assessment within the Australian vocational education and training system uses nationally agreed industry standards, referred to as competency standards, to measure whether a person is competent to perform or undertake specific tasks required to do a job. Under this system, people being assessed are found to be either competent or not yet competent. A person who is not yet competent against any standard can undertake further study or training and be assessed again. In order to be deemed competent at the unit level, students will be required to achieve satisfactory performance for each assessment item or task for the unit of competency. Critical aspects for assessment and evidence required to demonstrate competency Each unit of competency identifies specific evidence that must be demonstrated. This is referred to as critical aspects. Students will be provided with the information that relates to the critical aspects of evidence for individual units of competency. The individual being assessed needs to be part of the planning, conduct and review of the assessment process and needs to be aware that the collection of evidence is ongoing. Each unit of competency, or cluster of units, includes specific requirements in relation to skills and knowledge that must be demonstrated as part of the assessment process. Skills are often assessed in a workplace environment over a period of time and in a range of situations. A workplace supervisor, colleague or mentor may be requested to provide a report regarding student performance in specific situations. The Third Party Report should support the judgements being made by the trainer/assessor. The report is not used by itself as evidence of competence. Context of assessment Competency should be demonstrated in the workplace and/or in a simulated workplace environment, as identified in each individual unit of competency. Industry has determined that assessment in a real workplace environment is most appropriate whenever possible. For valid and reliable assessment, evidence should be gathered through a range of methods and over a period of time to indicate consistent performance. It can be gathered from assessment of the unit of competency alone, through an integrated assessment activity or through a combination of both. Evidence should be gathered as part of a learning process where application of skills and knowledge are demonstrated. 2
3 Assessment methods All units identify assessment methods appropriate to the individual unit of competency. This may include observation of workplace tasks, written or oral questioning to assess knowledge, completing workplace projects using scenarios or case studies, complex document design and development and portfolio construction. Specific resources required for assessment All units of competency identify resource requirements appropriate to the unit. For example, access to: a real or simulated work environment relevant documentation, such as workplace policy and procedures manuals a range of contexts/clients with different requirements a range of products and services appropriate to the workplace a qualified workplace assessor or assessment team. Competency covers all aspects of workplace performance and involves: performing individual tasks managing a range of different tasks responding to contingencies or breakdowns dealing with the responsibilities of the workplace, including working with others. Verification of student work It is important that the assessors can be sure that the evidence you submit for final assessment has been completed by you unassisted. All students must make a formal declaration that the work submitted by them for assessment purposes is their own. This information is provided on the Assessment Overview for each of Assessment Workbook in the qualification. Any student who submits work that is not their own, and who claims that it is their own, will be subject to the RTO Plagiarism and Cheating policy. This policy is detailed in the RTO Smart Start Student handbook for TAE Students may be required to show cause as to why their enrolment should not be cancelled. Re-submission or re-sitting for assessment activities When a student is not able to demonstrate competence in relation to all or part of an assessment activity, they will be offered an opportunity to re-submit (an assignment or portfolio) or re-sit (an examination, test or practical skills demonstration). Students will be provided with feedback in relation to their level of performance and provided with assistance to enable them to meet the competency requirements. If the student is not able to meet the required competency standards at the second attempt, they may be required to re-enrol in the unit of competency. 3
4 Instructions to students regarding written testing There are short answer and extended response questions for specific sections in the assessment workbooks. Answer all questions clearly. Where there are multiple parts to a question, answer each part separately. If you make a correction, ensure that the final answer is clearly written. Give as much detail as you can to explain your answers. Other assessment materials might include information on projects, case studies, simulation activities, checklists for third party evidence, self-assessment forms or portfolio requirements. Assessment instruments The following range of assessment instruments may be used to assess the units of competency in this qualification: responses to case studies and scenarios planning documents, developed or customised resources direct questioning combined with review of portfolios of evidence and third party workplace reports of on-the-job performance by the candidate observation of presentations oral or written questioning to assess knowledge of theories and concepts relating to working as a trainer and assessor in VET evaluation strategies established to monitor and evaluate performance training and assessment review documentation (plan conduct and review processes) Submitting your Assessment Submit the three completed workbooks with all supporting evidence as electronic files on your USB. This might require you to scan some documents. You will need to sign and date the authenticity statement and scan as a file to accompany your assessments. This is important as your work will be returned if this statement has not been completed. Box 642 Helensvale Qld 4212 Learning Portfolio Requirements A Learning Portfolio involves collecting evidence from a variety of sources, normally in a structured format. The Learning Portfolio is designed to provide a range of opportunities for you to demonstrate that you are able to collect, analyse and evaluate appropriate resources that will enhance your knowledge and skills. 4
5 Within the portfolio you will be expected to provide: Information /fact sheets Organisational policies and procedures Examples of legislation (websites) Journal entries Checklists Research articles Copyright, IP and Moral Rights All students are required to meet the copyright, IP and moral rights standards set out at induction. Where students submit work developed as part of a group or pair activity, ensure that the specific contribution of each student is clearly outlined and described. All parties who contribute should sign when a joint element is provided in the Learning Portfolio. The Presentation Students will present their Learning Portfolio with Workbook 2 and 3. You will need to be able to explain the components in the Learning Portfolio and answer questions in relation to items provided. Some of these may be contingency questions where you will be asked to explain What would you do if...? This questioning will allow you to demonstrate that you can apply knowledge in new and different situations. Marking Your Assessment Portfolio will be deemed satisfactory or unsatisfactory according to the criteria outlined in the assessment tool. All assessment items need to be submitted to a satisfactory level in order to be graded as competent for the unit. Feedback Students will be provided with written and/or oral feedback on all assessment submitted for the TAE
6 Assessment Summary The following information outlines the assessment items students will be required to complete for each unit of competency for the TAE Note that some activities require collection of a number of pieces of evidence over a period of time. Other activities, such as the theory tests, will take a limited number of hours. The following units are to be assessed: Assessment Requirements TAEASS401B TAEASS402B TAEASS403B TAEDEL401A TAEDEL402A TAEDES401A TAEDES402A TAEASS301B TAEDEL301A BSBCMM401A Plan assessment activities and processes Assess competence Participate in assessment validation Plan, organise and deliver group-based learning Plan, organise and facilitate learning in the workplace Design and develop learning programs Use training packages and accredited courses to meet client needs Contribute to assessment Provide work skill instruction Make a presentation There are three Workbooks that contain the assessment for the TAE40110 as follows: Workbook 1 Written Activities Nature of task: Location for assessment: Supervision: Information Written questions, exercises and scenario responses home-based Trainer/assessor To complete the activities in this workbook, students will need to: 1. Refer to the index in the text for this course to locate relevant responses to questions and exercises. 2. Research information on the internet about the NVR STANDARDS ( working in VET and training packages 6
7 3. Submit Workbook 1 to their assessor on completion. Workbook 2 Workplace Projects Nature of task: Develop Learning Programs for Groups and Individuals and supporting portfolio Information To complete this two part project students are required to: 1. Develop a learning program for a group of learners 2. Facilitate individual learning in the workplace Note: Each project requires you to demonstrate your competency through actual training and/or assessment situations. Each project should be carried out in the workplace or a simulated workplace. If you need guidance in selecting an appropriate topic for each project, please consult with your trainer. Ensure that you take the time to review the information below before undertaking each task. 3. Submit the completed workbook and portfolio of evidence on completion Workbook 3 Work-based project Nature of task: Information Conduct RPL with one candidate 1. This project should be carried out in the workplace or a simulated workplace. Ideally it should be linked to one of the individualised learning pathways you will develop that will allow for a focus on the gap training requirement. You need to refer to your training needs analysis and the benchmark requirements to identify which of your clients might benefit by undertaking RPL. Please consult with your trainer if you need assistance with selecting an appropriate candidate for this project. 2. It may also be completed as a standalone project but must be supported by a unit of competency from a training package. 3. Submit the completed project with supporting portfolio of evidence along with Workbook 2 on completion. 7
