Job Description- SQL Database Administrator Main purpose of job: The SQL Database Administrator will be responsible for the provision of high quality IS support for existing database applications, developing reports, systems integrations, small tactical projects. Position in the organisation: Reports to the Application Support Manager Scope of job: Day-to-day support and development of the Society s IS Applications and Database servers. Dimensions and limits of authority: On a day to day basis you will be responsible for Investigation and diagnosis of problems, providing workarounds where appropriate, writing, testing and releasing data fixes, system testing of application fixes, monitoring of import processes and helping clients in the day to day use of the system. Configuration and deployment work on projects as directed by the Application Support Manager. Duties and key responsibilities: On a day to day basis you will be responsible for Investigation and diagnosis of problems, providing workarounds where appropriate, writing, testing and releasing data fixes, system testing of application fixes, helping clients in the day to day use of the system. Specific responsibilities will include: Developing and enhancing the Society s Information Technology database strategy. Working with internal and external developers to develop tactical applications for the society using the standard tools and operational frameworks. To develop procedures and tools to minimise the cost of ownership for applications used within the society. For example automating user creation via scripts. To work with the MIS Project Manager on IS/IT related projects, providing technical support and advice to individual project managers as necessary, and assisting in technical development and deployment of the project. Provide technical support for the Society s database systems. This will include maintenance of user accounts, performance monitoring and ensuring data integrity.

Ensure that Database Applications operate within an IT environment that is stable, secure, resilient, monitored and backed-up in line with continuity plans. Set up appropriate database security protocols for applications and ensure their maintenance throughout the Society and are in compliance with the Society s Information Security policy. To undertake any other task, duties or projects that are commensurate with the general level of this post and as directed by the Head of IS/IT or other directors This job description is not exhaustive and serves only to highlight the main requirements of the post holder. Person Specification All of the following requirements are essential, unless marked with a * when they are desirable, and will be assessed from a combination of information provided from the application form, extended interview process, panel interview and references: Education and qualifications A level in English and Maths, or equivalent Skills and experience Good time management skills Good written and verbal communication skills Experience of administering SQL server 2005/2008 in a virtualized environment. Expert knowledge of SQL server 2005/2008 Performance tuning, T-SQL, Stored procedures, Triggers and UDF development. Knowledge of ETL processes (CSV files, Spreadsheets, Ms Access and FTP). Experience of SQL server 2005/2008 disaster recovery using database mirroring and log shipping. Exposure to SQL server 2005/2008 Business Intelligence using SSRS and SSIS would be an advantage. User application support (ProgressCRM).* Experience of front-end application development tools such as VBA, VBScript, and/or C#. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. High analytical skills, quick at grasping new concepts, and comfortable working within challenging deadlines. An understanding of the need for client confidentiality and Data Protection law. Personal attributes / qualities Able to travel independently throughout England, Wales and NI* To be able to work with minimal supervision. Fast learner able to work on a range of Applications and Technical Platforms An ability to be able to communicate effectively in writing and verbally to a wide range of people including on technical issues. Information for Candidates Terms and Conditions of Employment Outlined below are some of the main terms and conditions of employment relevant to all employees of the Society. Probation All posts are subject to a probationary period of 12 weeks unless otherwise stated on the letter of appointment, during which your performance will be reviewed from time to time. During this probationary period, either party may terminate the contract by giving the appropriate notice. After satisfactory completion of the probationary period, the notice stated on your contract of employment will apply. Location Your main place of work will be detailed in your contract of employment. You may be required to work in other locations from time to time. You will not be required to work outside the United Kingdom for a continuous period of more than one month. Salary Payment All new employees are placed on a set grade based on the Society s salary scheme, and this is normally reviewed in April of each year. The commencing salary will be as stated in the contract of appointment. Salaries are paid in arrears on or around the 25th of each calendar month, by direct credit transfer into a bank or building society account. Annual Leave The holiday year runs from 1 April to 31 March. In each holiday year, in addition to bank and statutory holidays, the holiday entitlement in the first full year will be 25 days, pro-rated according to hours of work and start date. This then increases in line with service as follows: during the first full leave year and up to 2 leave years 25 days, third leave year 26 days, fourth leave year 27 days, fifth leave year 30 days. Holiday will be calculated on a pro-rata basis for part-time workers. Pension Scheme After successfully passing your probation you may be eligible to join the Society s nominated pension scheme subject to the rules of the scheme as amended from time to time. The Society currently operates a Group Personal pension scheme provided by Zurich. All employees under the age of 75 may join the scheme on completion of the probationary period. Employees may contribute a percentage of their salary to the scheme and the Society will double the employee s contribution up to 8% of the employees gross salary. This will mean that a 1% employee contribution will attain a 2% contribution from the Society and a 4% contribution will attain the maximum 8% from the Society. Alzheimer s Society will not pay into a personal pension scheme. Sick Leave The Society operates an occupational sick pay scheme that is based on length of service with the Society. Benefits 6 of 7
