Preparing t Deply Reflectin 14.1: A Guide fr System Administratrs This guide will help yu thrugh the prcess f preparing t deply Reflectin t yur users using the Micrsft Windws Installer (MSI) technlgy. The intended audience fr this guide is system administratrs wh plan t custmize Reflectin r wh need t make additinal files available t their users. Several ptins are available t yu t custmize Reflectin and its deplyment t yur users. This guide will explain many f thse ptins and list the steps t fllw fr each ptin. If yu d nt plan t custmize Reflectin r make additinal files available t yur users, refer t Technical Nte 1686 fr infrmatin abut a simple Reflectin deplyment. Overview f the Installatin and Deplyment Prcess If yu plan t custmize Reflectin, preparing t deply Reflectin is a three-phase prcess: 1. Preparatin Install prduct and utilities t yur wrkstatin and prepare Reflectin fr user installatin access. Create r lcate settings r client files and preset FTP settings. 2. Custmizatin Custmize Reflectin. 3. Deplyment Determine and prepare fr yur deplyment methd. The diagram belw shws the phases and the ptins yu can chse frm during the installatin and deplyment prcess. PREPARING TO DEPLOY REFLECTION 14.1 3
Phase I Preparing t Install Reflectin Befre yu can deply Reflectin t yur users, yu must install Reflectin and Reflectin's administratr utilities t yur wrkstatin, create new r lcate existing settings r client files, and if apprpriate, prepare Reflectin FTP settings fr exprt. In Phase 1, yu will perfrm the fllwing functins: Install Reflectin t the administratr's wrkstatin Install the Reflectin Administratr's Tlkit Create new settings r client files Preset Reflectin FTP settings fr exprt Lcate existing settings files Prepare fr installatin access Install Reflectin t the Administratr's Wrkstatin If yu plan t custmize Reflectin, the first step is t install the prduct t yur wrkstatin. 1. Start the installatin prgram, Install.exe. 2. Select the prduct yu wish t install, fr example, Reflectin Suite fr X. 3. Click Wrkstatin Install. 4. The Attachmate Reflectin Installatin Wizard pens. Fllw the prmpts t cmplete the Reflectin installatin t yur wrkstatin. Select Custm as the Installatin Type s that yu can see which features are installed t yur machine. Install the Reflectin Administratr's Tlkit The Reflectin Administratr's Tlkit includes the Custmizatin Manager and prduct prfilers. Fllw the steps belw t install these tls: 1. Navigate t Install.exe and duble-click. 2. Click Install Reflectin. 3. Select Reflectin Administratr's Tlkit. 4. Click Wrkstatin Install. The Attachmate Reflectin Installatin Wizard pens. Click Next. 5. Accept the license agreement and click Next. 6. (Optinal) Enter yur custmer infrmatin and click Next. 7. Accept the Destinatin Flder default, C:\Prgram Files\Attachmate\RTlkit\. Nte: The destinatin flder shuld be different frm yur Reflectin's installatin flder. PREPARING TO DEPLOY REFLECTION 14.1 4
8. Select the features yu wish t install: the Custmizatin Manager, the apprpriate prduct prfilers, and language supprt, if required. 9. Fllw the prmpts t cmplete the installatin. Abut Reflectin Custmizatin Manager Use Reflectin Custmizatin Manager t custmize yur installatin fr deplyment. In Phase 1, yu can use this utility t access the Cnnectin Wizard t create new settings r client files and t put yur installatin n a file r web server befre yu custmize Reflectin. Yu will als use Reflectin Custmizatin Manager in Phase 2. T pen Reflectin Custmizatin Manager, click Start > Prgrams > Attachmate Reflectin > Administrative Tls > Custmizatin Manager. Create New Settings r Client Files If yu want t cnfigure settings files r client files t include with yur installatin, launch Reflectin and create and save yur files. Yu will access these files later when yu create a cmpanin package (a separate installatin package with settings r client files) fr yur Reflectin deplyment. Preset FTP Settings fr Exprt If yu want t exprt FTP settings t yur users, yu must install Reflectin FTP t yur PC and perfrm custmizatins n yur machine. Custmizatin Manager will exprt these settings frm yur administrative machine's registry. The steps t exprt FTP settings are cvered in Phase 2. PREPARING TO DEPLOY REFLECTION 14.1 5
Lcate Existing Settings Files If yu have existing settings r client files that yu want t make available t yur users, nte their lcatin. Yu will use this infrmatin later when yu create a cmpanin package (a separate installatin package with settings r client files) fr yur deplyment. Prepare fr Installatin Access Nw yu need t decide hw yur users will access the installatin frm a file server r frm a web server. The steps yu take depend n which methd yu chse. Nte: Each user may need administrative privileges (depending n the deplyment sftware used) t install MSI and Reflectin. When the service is installed, a rebt will be required and the installatin will need t be restarted. Yu can deply Reflectin frm a file server r frm sme web servers. Deply Reflectin frm a File Server An administrative installatin f Reflectin n a file server is used when an end user will install the prduct using the file system. The administrative installatin is put n the server befre the system administratr custmizes it. Fllw the prcedure belw t perfrm an administrative installatin using Custmizatin Manager. 1. Start Reflectin Custmizatin Manager. 2. On the left, click Prepare, and then click Prepare Reflectin Installatin fr Deplyment frm a File Server. 3. Under Installatin package (*.msi), specify the path t the Reflectin installatin package file (*.msi). Type the path directly r click Brwse t pen a dialg bx yu can use t find this file. (This will be n the prduct CD in yur CD-ROM drive.) 4. Under File server installatin pint, specify the file server flder where the administrative installatin will be created. This lcatin must be accessible t the end users installing Reflectin. 5. Click OK. Custmizatin Manager begins the prcess f preparing the installatin package fr yur custmizatins at the file server. Nte: The time required t create the administrative installatin varies depending n which Reflectin prduct yu are installing. PREPARING TO DEPLOY REFLECTION 14.1 7
Deply Reflectin frm a Web Server Yu can deply Reflectin t yur users frm sme web servers. Fr detailed infrmatin abut this tpic, see the Custmizatin Manager help. Imprtant Security Nte: If installing Reflectin frm a web server, firewalls, prxy servers and settings, and external access t yur site are issues that can bth prevent installatin f Reflectin t the end user and/r permit an unauthrized user t gain access t the prduct and yur site. Cpy Added Files Between Installatins Use this dialg bx t cpy added files and shrtcuts frm ne Reflectin transfrm file t anther transfrm r t a cmpanin package. Phase 2 Custmizing Reflectin At this pint, yu have Reflectin and the administrative tls installed t yur administrative machine, and Reflectin has been installed t the file server r web server, depending n hw yu chse t make Reflectin available t yur users. Yur task in Phase 2 is t custmize the installatin fr yur users using the Reflectin Custmizatin Manager. Yu can select which features yu want installed n user machines, limit user access t Reflectin functinality, and distribute these custmizatins t the apprpriate user grups. Phase 2 addresses the fllwing tpics: Open the installatin Set installatin ptins Edit prduct shrtcuts Add files t the installatin Define prfiles and default settings fr Reflectin Set client metering ptins Make additinal files available fr yur users with cmpanin packages View custmizatin details PREPARING TO DEPLOY REFLECTION 14.1 9
Open the Installatin (Reflectin Installer Package) T start Reflectin Custmizatin Manager, click Start > Prgrams > Attachmate Reflectin > Administrative Tls > Custmizatin Manager. On the left panel, click Custmize, and then click Open Installatin. T custmize the Reflectin installatin, select the Custmize a Reflectin installatin ptin n the Open Installatin dialg bx and brwse t the Reflectin Installer package n yur server. Click OK. Set Installatin Optins Use this dialg bx t specify the installatin lcatins fr the Reflectin prduct, the end user's flder fr their Reflectin-generated files, and the Start menu lcatin fr Reflectin. The buttns near the bttm f the dialg bx let yu chse features and prperties. Select Features Select the features and mde f installatin fr yur end users. Yu can hide unneeded features frm yur users. Applicatin Prperties Set prperties specific t a Reflectin applicatin, such as preferred Telnet prvider, X passwrd-caching preferences, and settings fr yur preferred hst type. This ptin is nt available if the installatin yu are custmizing des nt have prperties applicable t the features. Installatin Prperties Add Installer prperties t yur custmized installatin. Ding this lets yu, fr example, mdify the infrmatin and functinality f the Add/Remve Sftware cntrl panel entry fr Reflectin r cntrl the actin f restarting the PC. Edit Prduct Shrtcuts Use this dialg bx t view the attributes f each prduct shrtcut assciated with a Reflectin feature. If a shrtcut setting shuld be changed, the ptins in this dialg bx let yu change these attributes t cntrl the shrtcut behavir at the end user's machine. T d this, use the Prperties buttn t pen the Shrtcut Prperties dialg bx where yu can set the shrtcut name, lcatin, descriptin, and parameters included in a shrtcut's assciated cmmand line. Yu can als make a cpy f a shrtcut if yu want it in mre than ne lcatin r if yu want t run it with tw different cmmand lines. Nte: Resiliency, r the ability t "self-repair" if a feature is accidentally deleted, is supprted when yu chse Windws Installer shrtcuts in the Shrtcut style fr all shrtcuts. Add Files t the Installatin It is pssible t add additinal files (such as settings files, client files, text files, r dcument files) t the installatin using the Add Files feature. If yu want the file t remain after upgrading r uninstalling the prduct, select the "Make this file permanent" check bx in the Add File t Installatin dialg bx. Anther way t add files t the installatin is by creating a cmpanin package. Using a cmpanin package als allws yu t retain additinal files when yu upgrade r uninstall Reflectin. Define Prfiles and Default Settings fr Reflectin Use this dialg bx t include a prfiled versin f Reflectin r t make yur preferred default applicatin settings the default in the deplyed installatin (Reflectin FTP, fr example). The fllwing ptins are available: Reflectin Prduct The list f Reflectin prducts yu can install. This list is filtered t shw nly thse prducts that can be prfiled r that cntain settings that can be exprted. A symbl dentes the difference. Nte: If a prfiler is nt installed fr a prduct, yu will see a triangular symbl with an exclamatin mark. Check t see that yu installed the Reflectin Prfiler feature, and ensure that yu are using versin 14.x f the Reflectin prducts. Reflectin FTP must be installed lcally in rder t exprt the settings. Mdificatin Infrmatin The wrd Default appears if n changes have been made. If a change is made using a prfiling r exprting utility, then the time and date f the actin is shwn here. Define buttn Highlight an applicatin and click this buttn t pen an assciated Prfiler r Exprt dialg bx yu can use t custmize the functinality f the applicatin. Default buttn Highlight an applicatin and click this buttn t return the applicatin t its default settings. Nte: T include prfiled cpies f Reflectin fr deplyment t yur users, yu must prfile Reflectin by launching the Prfiler frm Reflectin Custmizatin Manager. If yu launch the Prfiler frm the Start menu, yu will prfile nly yur lcal cpy f Reflectin. PREPARING TO DEPLOY REFLECTION 14.1 13
Prfile Reflectin When yu highlight an applicatin and click Define, the assciated utility starts. Fr example, the fllwing graphic shws the Reflectin fr UNIX and OpenVMS Prfiler that starts after selecting Reflectin fr UNIX and OpenVMS and clicking the Define buttn. Use the tabs in the Prfiler t prfile and define default settings fr Reflectin. Exprt FTP Settings Befre yu can exprt FTP settings, yu must Install Reflectin FTP lcally. Set the settings fr Reflectin prir t exprting the settings t the transfrm file. Fllw this prcedure t set the FTP settings: 1. In the Define Prfiles and Default Settings dialg bx, select Reflectin FTP frm the Reflectin Prduct clumn. Nte: If yu see an exclamatin pint symbl, then Reflectin FTP is nt installed n yur lcal machine. It shuld be lcated in a different flder frm the Reflectin Administratr Tlkit, but must be installed lcally in rder t set registry settings that will be exprted t yur custmized installatin. 2. Click Define. This launches the Exprt FTP Settings dialg bx. 3. Click Help t view help n Sites, Applicatin Settings, User Settings, and File Name infrmatin. These settings reflect yur current FTP cnfiguratin and shuld be the nes yu want yur end users t use. 4. Click OK in the Exprt FTP Settings dialg bx t return t the Define Prfiles and Default Settings dialg bx. 5. Click OK t clse the dialg bx and return t Custmizatin Manager main panel. Any changes yu made are nw saved t the transfrm file. PREPARING TO DEPLOY REFLECTION 14.1 14
Set Client Metering Optins Use this dialg bx t enable metering at install time and set the hst URL fr the metering sftware. Optinally, yu can als require Reflectin cnnect t the metering server befre starting a sessin and include the Vlume Purchase Accunt number (available frm the Abut bx under System in the Reflectin prduct). When the custmized Reflectin package is installed at the wrkstatin, metering infrmatin is placed in the registry and each wrkstatin will then be cnfigured t reprt t the server running Reflectin fr the Web Metering Server. This enables an Administratr t mnitr the use f Reflectin and ensure licensing cmpliance if desired. Client Metering Optins Cnfigure the fllwing ptins in the Client Metering dialg bx: Enable metering Select this ptin t enable metering (all ther ptins becme active). Metering infrmatin is sent t the server specified in the Metering web server bx. Metering web server Enter the URL f the Reflectin fr the Web Metering Server in this bx. Require metering server (Optinal) When this ptin is selected, Reflectin will nt run if it cannt cntact the specified server. If this bx is cleared and Reflectin is launched when the server is unavailable, Reflectin will still run, but the sessin will nt be metered and license limits (where licensing limits are cnfigured) will nt be enfrced. VPA number (Optinal) Use this ptin t enter the Vlume Purchase Accunt number assciated with yur Reflectin prduct. The VPA number will be displayed under System in the Reflectin Abut bx. Nte: Metering ptins can be cnfigured after installatin by using Grup Plicy. When yu d this, Grup Plicy settings take precedence ver installed settings. PREPARING TO DEPLOY REFLECTION 14.1 15
Make Additinal Files Available fr Yur Users with Cmpanin Packages If yu have existing files (such as settings files, client files, text files, r dcument files) r if yu created new files fr yur users, we recmmend that yu use a cmpanin package t make these files available t yur users. Abut Cmpanin Packages A cmpanin package is a standalne MSI file that is independent f any Reflectin installer package. It is highly recmmended that yu create a cmpanin package if yu wish t retain custmizatins acrss ne r mre upgrades f Reflectin. By putting added files, such as settings files, int a cmpanin package instead f adding them t the Reflectin prduct installatin, yu can later remve the settings files withut remving Reflectin. Create a Cmpanin Package fr Added Files Use this prcedure t create a new Reflectin cmpanin package. A cmpanin installatin package is highly recmmended if yu wish t retain custmizatins acrss ne r mre upgrades f Reflectin. 1. Start the Reflectin Custmizatin Manager and click Custmize t pen the Custmize Reflectin Installatins panel. 2. Click Open Installatin and select Create a cmpanin package in the Open Installatin dialg bx. 3. In Cmpanin package, type a full path and file name fr the cmpanin installatin and click OK. (Fr example, \\daisy\prducts\reflectin14\cmpanin.msi.) Be sure that the file lcatin is accessible t yur users. Custmizatin Manager asks if yu wuld like t create the cmpanin installatin yu have specified; click Yes t prceed. This prcess creates a new MSI file. 4. The Cmpanin Installatin dialg bx pens. Type a representative name fr the cmpanin package in the Add/Remve title bx. This is the title that will appear in Windws Add/Remve Prgrams. 5. Select an ptin under Installatin type: Installs t all users f a machine: The cmpanin installatin will be available fr every user wh lgs n t the machine. Installs nly fr the user wh installs it: The cmpanin installatin will be available nly fr the user wh installs it. Click OK t prceed. 6. Yu are returned t the Custmize Reflectin Installatins panel. Nte that certain buttns are nw available fr custmizing. PREPARING TO DEPLOY REFLECTION 14.1 16
Add Files t a Cmpanin Package Yu can add additinal files t a cmpanin package by fllwing the steps belw: 1. If it is nt already pen, pen the cmpanin package t which yu want t add files. 2. Click Add Files t pen the Add Files t Installatin dialg bx. 3. Use this dialg bx t view a list f files that are in yur cmpanin package (such as Reflectin settings r client files, r yur wn dcument r text files). T add anther file, click Add. Files can be added t this list using the Windws drag-and-drp technique. Install a Cmpanin Package When yu have finished custmizing yur cmpanin package, yu can deply it by itself r alngside yur custmized Reflectin installatin. The package remains n the end user's machine until it is remved using Add/Remve Prgrams. View Custmizatin Details Use this prcedure t pen and review yur deplyment decisins at any time prir t rlling ut Reflectin. When yu d this, yur chices are shwn in a web page laded int yur preferred brwser. 1. Start the Reflectin Custmizatin Manager frm yur lcal wrkstatin and click Custmize. 2. Open the installatin yu want t view. 3. Click Shw Custmizatin Details. The brwser pens and the "Summary f Custmizatins" page is laded fr viewing. Review the chices yu made and if yu want t save, use the File > Save As cmmand. The file is autmatically named fr yu using a reference t the transfrm file name. PREPARING TO DEPLOY REFLECTION 14.1 17
Phase 3 Deplying Reflectin In the final phase f preparing t deply Reflectin, yu must identify hw yu will deply Reflectin t yur users. Reflectin supprts a variety f methds fr deplying sftware t users: Create a deplyment shrtcut Deply silently, withut user interventin Assign and publish with Active Directry Use SMS Other deplyment methds Chse yur preferred methd, and fllw the prcedures in this sectin. Create a Deplyment Shrtcut This feature is available nly if yu are making Reflectin available t yur users frm a file server. Use this dialg bx t create a Windws shrtcut that an end user can duble-click t install Reflectin, fr example, frm a shared netwrk resurce t their wrkstatin. When yu create the shrtcut, the file is created and placed in the flder yu specify. Yu can als use this prcess t create a deplyment shrtcut fr a cmpanin installatin. 1. On the left panel, click Deplyment Utilities, and then click Create Deplyment Shrtcuts. 2. Specify the path t the flder where the shrtcut will be saved and click OK. 3. In the Deplyment Shrtcuts dialg bx, click Add. 4. Cnfigure the ptins in the dialg bx: PREPARING TO DEPLOY REFLECTION 14.1 18
Yu can cnfigure the fllwing ptins: Shrtcut name Type the name fr the shrtcut here. Actin Chse ne f fur actins: Install: Install Reflectin. Repair: Use the riginal administrative installatin f Reflectin t repair the user's damaged cpy. Redeply: Redeply Reflectin frm the administrative installatin f Reflectin. Typically, this is used after patching the administrative installatin, sending these patch-based updates t yur user. Uninstall: Remve Reflectin frm the end user's machine. User interactin Set the end user's interactin level with the installatin. Fur levels f user interactin are available: Silent (n UI): Runs the installatin with n visible sign f installatin and thus n user interventin. Display dialg at end: Causes Reflectin t display an infrmatinal message that indicates installatin is cmplete. Prgress bar: Shws a bar detailing the nging prgress f the installatin t the end user. Full installer wizard: Makes Reflectin shw every Installer panel with all ptins and feature selectins available t the end user. Nte: In Silent mde, n errr message will appear if the installatin fails. (Cnsult the lg in this scenari.) Installer language If yu chse "Fllw Reginal Settings," Reflectin will implement whatever language is currently used n the end user's machine. Or, chse English, French, German, r Japanese. Rebt cntrl Cntrl the rebt peratin fllwing installatin. (Reflectin NFS requires a rebt peratin fllwing installatin.) Rebt at end if necessary: It is recmmended that yu let Reflectin and the Installer service determine the need and executin f the rebt. Always rebt after last install: Rebt the PC after the very last installatin f a chained installatin set. Never rebt: D nt rebt the PC. A manual rebt may be required. Cmment (tltip) Type the tltip descriptin that yu want t appear when yu hver the muse pinter ver the shrtcut. Chaining Installatins Yu can cnfigure Custmizatin Manager t install tw r mre Reflectin prducts frm a single Windws shrtcut this is knwn as "chaining" prduct installatins. T d this, click OK after selecting the first package file and transfrm, and then click Add in the Deplyment Shrtcut dialg bx t pen this dialg bx again and repeat the prcess. Deply Silently, Withut User Interventin A silent installatin is an installatin that prceeds withut the end user being able t intervene r, in sme cases, even see that the installatin is nging. Yu can create a silent installatin by cnfiguring a Windws shrtcut using ptins in Custmizatin Manager's Deplyment Utilities panel. (See the steps in the preceding sectin, Create a Deplyment Shrtcut.) Yu can cnfigure a shrtcut t install Reflectin using ne f several silent installatin ptins: with a prgress bar, with a message n cmpletin, r even n user interactin at the user's machine. Assign and Publish with Active Directry Yu can assign and publish installatins using Active Directry. The fllwing prcedure utlines ne pssible way t publish an installatin t members f an rganizatinal unit. This is an example f ne f many pssible Active Directry strategies. T publish sftware, yu must be a member f Dmain Admins and Grup Plicy Creatrs and Owners. 1. T pen the Active Directry Users and Cmputers snap-in, click Start > Prgrams > Administrative Tls > Active Directry Users and Cmputers. 2. Right-click the rganizatinal unit t which yu want t publish the installatin, and then click Prperties. 3. Click the Grup Plicy tab. 4. Click New t create a new Grup Plicy bject, r click Edit t update an existing Grup Plicy bject. Yu can edit the name f the bject at this time. 5. With the bject yu created r selected, click Edit t pen the Grup Plicy windw. 6. In the left pane, pen User Cnfiguratin, and then pen Sftware Settings. 7. Right-click Sftware Installatin, click New, and then click Package. 8. In the Open dialg bx, lcate the Reflectin Installer package (Reflect.msi), r enter the UNC path t this file next t File name, and then click Open. 9. In the Deply Sftware dialg bx, click "Advanced published r assigned," and then click OK. 10. Click Mdificatins, and then click Add. 11. In the Open dialg bx, lcate the transfrm file yu created using Custmizatin Manager, and then click Open. Nte: Make sure yu have specified the transfrm(s) t use befre clicking OK.
