Whilst these are not school teaching qualifications, there are now employment opportunities in some schools and academies for post-16 teachers, particularly for teachers of vocational subjects. Profile Bernice McGowan After studying A Levels at Runshaw Sixth Form College, Bernice progressed the first year of the BA (Hons) Criminology & Criminal Justice at Runshaw College, completing years 2 and 3 at the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan). In 2014 Bernice returned Runshaw study a fulltime PGCE, gaining a teaching placement at the College in the Public Services Department. During her teaching placement, Bernice was nominated for and won a Golden Roses Award for Innovative Teaching. After successfully completing the PGCE Bernice was offered a permanent role as a tur and is now teaching on the Foundation Degree in Prisons & Law Enforcement, Access Higher Education: Social Sciences and Public Services Extended Diploma at Runshaw. Whilst teaching, Bernice has also presented her research on Gender, Desistance and Alternative Responses at the European Society of Criminology Conference in Prague. Bernice says, The PGCE enabled me develop my skills and apply my knowledge in the world of teaching. It was an invaluable course that propelled me become outstanding in the interests of learners. Entry Requirements You must: have five GCSEs at Grades A*-C or equivalent (including GCSE English Language or equivalent); and have an appropriate subject/vocational based qualification at Level 3 or above; and be able communicate fluently, accurately and effectively in professional spoken English. have a honours degree in the subject area you wish teach if you are a PGCE applicant. All students must also undergo a Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) check at a cost of 44 (price correct at Jan 2015). Evidence of a criminal prosecution does not necessarily exclude you from our Career Degree but it must be disclosed.
