2 LLB Law Plymouth LLB Law Degree has an innovative thread of legal skills training which has been commended by professional bodies such as the Law Society. Students have an opportunity to develop skills in client interviewing, negotiation, drafting and advocacy. Students can also take an active part in mooting. These practical legal skills are invaluable for students entering the Legal Practice Course or Bar Vocational Course. They are also extremely useful in many other fields of employment. Postgraduate Opportunities It is now possible to continue your professional legal studies at the University of Plymouth by studying the Legal Practice Course for students with a qualifying law degree or the Graduate Diploma in Law for students without a qualifying law degree. 3 Year One During year one you will explore a wide range of legal principles and concepts including the practices of the English legal system and the techniques of legal method and reasoning. You will also study Law Foundation subjects: Contract Law, Human Rights, and Constitutional and Administrative Law. By the end of year one, you will have acquired many of the cognitive and communication skills necessary to develop an in-depth understanding of law. During year two you will continue to build on the knowledge and understanding gained in year one. You will take modules in Lawyers Skills, Tort, European Law and Land Law as foundation subjects. You will also be able to choose from a number of electives, including Consumer Law, Environmental Law, Media and Information Law, Company Law and Health Care Law. Year Three In the final year, you will complete the seven foundation subjects by studying Criminal Law and Equity and Trusts. You may choose to write a dissertation on a legal topic of your choice or undertake a module in Work-based Learning. Other electives include Media and Information Law, Environmental Law, Company Law, Employment Law, Carriage of Goods by Sea, International Sale of Goods, E-commerce Law, Immigration Law, Health Case Law, Family Law, Marine Insurance, Law Literature and Film, Consumer Law, Public International Law, Immigration, Nationality and Refugee Law and Commercial Law. The committee members of the Society organise various social events, guest speakers and careers advice each year. The Plymouth Student Law Society has a reputation for being a social pillar of the student body and introduces students to the all-important skill of social networking. You will have the opportunity to experience many memorable events such as the Annual Law Society Ball which is attended by both students and lecturers alike. Career Opportunities Law underpins every aspect of social, political and economic life, providing for peaceful resolution of disputes in the interests of justice. The legal profession provides expert advice and advocacy, while lawyers are also valued in many other occupations for their strong problem solving and communication skills and their ability to think critically and objectively. The University of Plymouth has a good record when it comes to graduate employment. As a Law graduate with a qualifying law degree you will have completed the academic stage of professional training for the purposes of the Law Society and Bar Council. You can then go on to take the vocational stage of the Legal Practice Course or Bar Finals in order to qualify as a solicitor or barrister. A large number of our graduates successfully enter the legal profession. Many others have found employment in careers such as finance and accounting, management, education and the public sector. You will also have the choice of studying Constitutional and Administrative Law, or the Law of Contract. By the end of year one, you will have acquired many of the cognitive and communication skills necessary to develop an in-depth understanding of law. During year two you will continue to build on the knowledge and understanding gained in year one. You will take modules in Integrated Studies, Law of the European Union and the Law of Tort. You will also be able to choose from a number of electives including Consumer Law, Media and Information Law and Environmental Law. This is of course in addition to your minor subject. Year Three During the final year you will complete your studies by studying Integrated Studies OR a legal research and law project on a topic of your choice, and have the choice to study Criminal Law. As in year two, you will have a wide range of electives to choose from including, for example, Employment Law, Media and Information Law, Company Law, Environmental Law, International Sale of Goods, E-Commerce Law, Commercial Law, Immigration, Nationality and Refugee Law and Public International Law.
