2 76 Business INTRODUCTION AND RESOURCES Today s managers need to keep one step ahead of the rapid changes in the business environment. The wide range of skills possessed by a well-trained manager are in high demand across all commercial industries and service organisations. Successful managers are equipped with communications skills, a good grasp of financial planning techniques, the ability to manage change and a sound understanding of marketing and product development. A career in business management can be extremely lucrative for those with a solid educational background. Resources A newly resourced business management suite of rooms is the central location for management studies. The Business degree courses and the new Foundation degree provides opportunities for students to develop as potential managers in all industries. The interactive boards and internet access in the business suite brings the world of industry and commerce into the learning and teaching environment. Current management issues can be discussed as they develop rather than just being considered as dated information. Supply chain and marketing scenarios can be demonstrated with the use of technology as well as visits to the physical sites. Business Links The College offers a range of business services, which attract employers from far and wide for conferences, courses and seminars. These close links with business allow students access to a wide range of materials for visits, case studies and applied project work. Students use a range of dedicated business and accounting software for lectures and projects within the College. Business students also benefit from the College s associations with major external business organisations. Postgraduate Qualifications Students on this course will be given the opportunity to progress to a relevant programme in the Postgraduate School. This course aims to prepare students for a wide range of management courses within business and service organisations. On successful completion of the course, graduates will have a sound grasp of management issues, an understanding of the constraints within which decision making occurs and the problem-solving skills to identify solutions. The optional modules allow students to specialise in particular areas which will benefit their career progression. Business management students go on to work in a variety of commercial organisations, in general management positions as well as accounting, banking and finance. Job prospects are excellent for business management graduates and many of our students progress quickly to senior positions both in the UK and abroad. BA Business (UCAS Course Code N201) An Ordinary degree is available in Business. Ordinary degree awards focus on central areas of vocational education but include a range of optional modules to give flexibility in the second and third years. These programmes are aimed to produce practitioners in the associated industries with a range of technical and employability skills. Tutors are there to guide students in their selection of optional modules and create a distinctive programme in line with career goals and interests. The course focuses on how to supply the customer with the right product at the right price, in the right place, at the right time. The first year is made up of study areas relating to the business environment, applying theory to relevant topical issues. The second and third years are made up of compulsory and optional subjects related to marketing and supply chain management. Students select some study units based on their interests, academic strengths and career aspirations. Each applicant will be considered on merit. Whilst academic qualifications such as A levels, National Diplomas and HNCs will be considered, enthusiasm, experience and commitment are just as important. Progression The opportunity exists to progress to the BA Business, BA (Hons) Business or the BSc (Hons) and Supply Chain This course aims to develop graduates with an appropriate balance of academic understanding, specialist subject knowledge and core transferable skills. The emphasis throughout is on case study materials, portfolios and vocational tasks which integrates theoretical modules within an applied learning environment. Graduates will be well equipped to obtain employment with a wide range of large or small organisations within the UK or overseas. Foundation degree students who successfully complete the course also have the option of remaining within education and progressing to an Honours degree award.
