Why study this programme? The BA Hons Marketing degree programme has been designed in consultation with employers and other important stakeholders, such as the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM), the Market Research Society, the Institute of Direct and Digital Marketing, and students past, current and potential, to ensure that our students graduate with the knowledge and skills required in the marketplace. All our courses are geared to develop the skills that employers deem essential. These include presentation, analysis, research, teamwork and communication skills, as well as knowledge of relevant software. You will build on a strong foundation of essential marketing principles, gaining experience by working in teams on practical business problems. You will also have the opportunity to specialise in a specific marketing discipline in your final year. This programme provides valuable qualifications in addition to your degree. After the first year of study, successful students will be eligible for the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) Foundation Certificate in Marketing, with the CIM Diploma in Marketing usually following upon graduation. You will also gain exemptions from some Market Research Society and Institute of Direct and Digital Marketing examinations. Employers want graduates to have distinctive, relevant experience. The Department of Marketing, Events & Tourism has been running specialist marketing degree programmes for more than 30 years. We were the first UK university to offer a specialist degree in marketing communications, and we continue to offer quality undergraduate and postgraduate marketing degrees, as well as public relations (PR), events management, hospitality and tourism management programmes. New communication channels continue to revolutionise the industry and move these disciplines beyond their roots in consumer business. Our staff are active in research and maintain excellent professional contacts. The Greenwich Campus is based on a UNESCO World Heritage Site on the banks of the River Thames. The university s largest campus, it is centred on three baroque buildings designed by Sir Christopher Wren at the end of the 17th century. The surrounding town is a bustling mix of shops, restaurants and pubs, as well as some of the most famous tourist attractions in the country. The business districts of Canary Wharf and the City are a short journey away on the Docklands Light Railway. There are also direct rail links into central London. What will you study? Year 1 Personal and Professional Development 1: The Marketer (30 credits) This course provides you with the academic skills platform to optimise your learning across this degree programme. The taught phases contextualise teaching and learning content and balance the marketing communications and broad global marketing perspectives. Principles and Practice of Marketing (30 credits) This course aims to provide an exciting and rewarding journey into the principles of marketing, which will form the cornerstone of the knowledge you gain throughout your degree. It introduces the principles underlying the philosophy of marketing and develops your awareness of the ethical and societal issues surrounding the process.
Financial Aspects of Marketing This course provides you with an understanding of the financial aspects of marketing. It describes the specific roles of finance and marketing and their relationship to each other. Multi-Channel Marketing This course helps you to understand how the role of channel intermediaries and retailers has changed over the years, and also to grasp the latest trends in multichannel retailing and the ability to evaluate future trends. Public Relations (30 credits) In order to understand public relations practice and how it functions in relation to marketing, it is important to have a theoretical grounding and conceptual understanding of this growing discipline. Firstly, this course will empower you to create your own PR plans. Secondly, it will enable you to develop a knowledge base of the main theories and concepts relevant to the public relations discipline. Year 2 Research Methods for Marketers This course will provide you with skills and knowledge related to critical evaluation of theories, concepts and conceptual frameworks, as well as research design. Customer Insight and Research (30 credits) Gaining insight into consumers is pivotal to marketing, as it helps marketers develop a deeper understanding of the needs and wants of the marketplace. It is widely acknowledged that the customer is king, which implies developing customercentric strategies. Therefore, the study of consumers and consumer behaviour is imperative if one is to succeed in the marketplace. Marketing Management (30 credits) This course provides an overview of the discipline of marketing at both functional and strategic level. You will gain an appreciation of the tools, concepts and models with which to undertake a marketing audit and evaluate marketplace potential and risk from the perspective of a company s unique selling proposition (USP). Strategic Brand Management This course will equip you with an understanding of the characteristics of a brand and the dynamic influences on consumer response to brands and brand communications. Brand analysis is essential if organisations are to capitalise on brand assets and justify investment in the long term, and a number of, sometimes competing, frameworks are examined.
Personal and Professional Development 2: The Marketer in Context This course builds on the skills acquired in PPD1. Its twin themes are employability and personal effectiveness, with the overarching aim being to enable students to develop as reflective practitioners in both a business and academic context. Global Marketing Management This course will provide you with an understanding of marketing in a global context and help you to develop a critical understanding of the theories, models and concepts relating to international marketing. It will also provide you with the skills necessary to conduct business in an overseas market. Overseas Exchange Programme You can apply to participate in the European Union student exchange programme, Erasmus. This can provide a grant towards the cost of studying part of this degree in a European partner institution during your second year. Benefits of becoming an Erasmus student include: Employability you can demonstrate qualities that employers are looking for, such as an ability to take on and adapt to new challenges and environments New experiences you can have lots of fun, meet interesting people and gain new skills Increased language proficiency you can learn or master another language Maturity you can build your confidence and independence by managing life in a different culture. Optional Sandwich Year You can undertake a paid work placement in your third year. This will help you further increase your career prospects and earning potential by giving you practical experience and industry insight. The Business School Employability Office can help you find suitable placement opportunities, as well as giving practical advice on writing CVs and preparing you for assessment centres and interviews. Previous students have worked for Microsoft, Warner Music Group and IBM. University life was great. I still see a lot of friends. I got to work in Boston in my second year, whilst on my sandwich year placement, which was an unforgettable experience. The marketing programme was hard work at times but the fact that University of Greenwich promotes teamwork really helps you get to grips with working in teams on projects together. Helen Coe Marketing Executive, Incisive Media BA Hons Marketing Graduate Final Year Direct, Interactive and Digital Marketing (30 credits) This course will provide you with an understanding of digital, interactive and direct marketing tools within the paradigm of relationship marketing. You will develop a critical understanding of theories, models and concepts pertaining to interactive and direct marketing.
Strategic Decision Making for Marketers This course situates market and marketing strategy in a broad strategic context. It provides an understanding of the principles of business strategy and sensitises them to strategic and general management issues as they relate to marketing. Contemporary Issues in Marketing A number of issues dominate at the leading edge of marketing theory. Of these, perhaps the most significant are integrated marketing communications, electronic marketing and relationship marketing. These areas are far from exclusive, and the ways they overlap provide many issues for debate. These form the core themes of this course. Leading Innovation and Creativity This course looks into the areas of creativity and innovation through new product development. You will gain an understanding of the principles, practice and ethical and societal issues. Social Marketing This course enables students to address ethical, social and environmental problems related to social marketing. It also looks at the behaviour change and choice theories frequently employed by social marketers worldwide. You will also undertake one of the following courses: Thematic Independent Studies (30 credits) This course provides you with the opportunity to undertake a major project of self-directed study through investigation and evaluation of an aspect or aspects of academic knowledge. It will lead you to take a more analytical view towards your degree programme. Dissertation (30 credits) The purpose of the dissertation is to enable you to develop an ability to define and analyse a complex business problem, to help integrate academic knowledge and practical applications and to give practice in the specification, collection, analysis and reporting of information. Career opportunities Graduates from this programme can pursue careers in brand/marketing management, marketing research or consultancy or as advertising and marketing executives. Many of our recent graduates are also forging successful careers in the cutting-edge world of direct, interactive and digital marketing. Teaching and assessment This programme is taught by a combination of lectures, tutorials, seminars, case studies and presentations. Courses combine a strong commercial orientation with academic rigour. You will be assessed through assignments, examinations and presentations.
