Getting started with SQL Manage After dwnlading SQL Manage (http://www.futureitsft.cm/dwnlads.aspx?page=trial), installatin cnsists f: SQL Manage Agent Setup - This is the server side cmpnent f the SQL Manage Standard Editin applicatin, t be installed n every SQL server that is cntrlled by the SQL Manage applicatin. The SQL manage agent is respnsible fr the sending f ntificatins, shrinking f databases and expiratin f ld backup files. SQL Manage Setup - This is the client side cmpnent (the GUI) f the SQL Manage Editin applicatin. It is t be installed n every statin that is used t cntrl the SQL Manage services. SQL Manage cnsle enables yu t manage, maintain and mnitr SQL Servers. Starting SQL Manage Agent Service Prceed t Start/Prgrams/SQL Manage, and click n "SQL Manage Standard Agent Cnsle" The SQL Manage Agent icn n the system tray will turn green. On the system tray, right click the green SQL Manage Agent icn and frm the cntext menu chse "Shw Agent Cnsle". On the Agent Cnsle, view that the SQL Manage Agent has started. Afterwards, n the Agent Lg menu click View Agent lg. 2 www.futureitsft.cm
In the pened lg file, make sure that the lines: "SQL Manage Agent Started..." and "Server (Server Name) added t agent" appears. In the Agent Cnsle g t the Settings menu and chse "Manage Instances". In the pened dialg, click "View Instance Lg" n the Lg menu. 3 www.futureitsft.cm
In the pened lg file, make sure that these 6 lines f successful peratins appear: SUCCESSFULLY cnnected t server [SERVER NAME] SUCCESSFULLY indicated agent started SUCCESSFULLY initialized ntificatin bject SUCCESSFULLY initialized zip request bject SUCCESSFULLY initialized SAP Agent request bject SUCCESSFULLY initialized expired backup bject In the event f an errr, cnnect t the SQL server with "Custm Credentials" thrugh either "Integrated Security" r "User Name and Passwrd (SA)". 4 www.futureitsft.cm
Prceed t select "Save Settings" and afterwards "Check Cnnectin". Starting SQL Manage fr the first time After installing SQL Manage, pen the SQL Manage cnsle (The SQL Manage user guide is available at: www.futureitsft.cm/dwnlads/sql_manage_help.pdf ). On the system lgin dialg: click n the "brwse" buttn t chse the server t cnnect t, r supply a server name manually. On the same dialg, supply yur SQL credentials (either thrugh Windws Integrated security r the SQL Server lgin (SA). The latter being the recmmended ptin). Click n "Lgin" 5 www.futureitsft.cm
SQL Manage Activatin: On the "SQL Manage Standard Editin Activatin" dialg bx that appears, prceed by either selecting t cntinue using the " SQL Manage Evaluatin Cpy" r t execute a full activatin f "SQL Manage" If yu chse t cntinue utilizing the "SQL Manage Evaluatin Cpy", then click n "Activate Later". If yu shuld chse t execute a full activatin f "SQL Manage Standard Editin", then click n "Activate Nw". 6 www.futureitsft.cm
The "SQL Manage Activatin" dialg bx appears Prceed t enter yur cmpany name in the apprpriate "Cmpany Name" field. Wait fr the "Lcal Key" t be generated Click n "Generate Activatin Request Email" t request an activatin key Yu will then receive an activatin key by e-mail Enter the received activatin key in the allcated space and click n "OK". Implementing SQL Manage fr SQL Server databases In this stage, we will assciate SQL Server databases with predefined SQL Manage default rules. These predefined settings, specifically designed fr SQL Server databases, prvide an autmatic prfile fr maintenance, backups, acceleratin, restratins, and administratin recmmended fr running SQL Server databases. The fllwing simple "ne-click" prcess will assciate the SQL Manage Default Maintenance Rules with the applicable SQL Server databases. 7 www.futureitsft.cm
Prceed t "Manage Databases". On the "Manage Databases" screen, select the relevant database(s) that yu wish t apply the predefined SQL Manage Default Maintenance Rules n (t select multiple databases, use the ctrl buttn). Once yu have selected the database(s), select the "Attach Rules" tab. 8 www.futureitsft.cm
Select "SQL Manage Defaults" frm the "Database Prperties Rule", "Backup Operatins Rules" and "Maintenance Operatins Rules" cmb bxes. Then click n "Attach rules t Database". 9 www.futureitsft.cm
Prceed t click n the "Scheduled Operatins" tab t view the attached rules. This cmpletes the implementatin f SQL Manage Default Maintenance Prfiles n the selected SQL Server Databases. Descriptin f the SQL Manage default settings fr SQL Server Applying these rules will deply the fllwing settings fr maintenance, alerts and backup n the SQL Server databases. Any ne f the belw settings can easily be changed manually accrding t yur requirements n the "Maintenance Rules" screen. Prperty ptimizatin Allws yu t change the administrative prperties f a database. In the applicatin f the predefined SQL Manage default "prperty ptimizatin" rule, the database is set t a "full recvery mdel". This mdel, cmbined with SQL Manage perfrming lg backups the way it des, autmatically allws fr the restratin t a pint f time. Database backup Schedules an peratin fr the backup f selected databases, everyday at 23:30. Backup 2/ Archive This rule is identical t the Database Backup rule and is intended t create a secnd set f database backup files in a different schedule r lcatin as the user decides (daily, weekly r mnthly). Transactin lg backup Schedules an peratin fr the backup f the transactin lg f selected databases, which keeps database mdificatins. This ccurs everyday, at 6 hur intervals, between 7:00-19:00. Index ptimizatin This peratin ccurs every Friday at 20:00. MS SQL Server indexes significantly imprve database perfrmance. Yet, with time and when n index maintenance is perfrmed, the structure f the indexes is fragmented. Index ptimizatin enables yu t defrag nly, r t defrag and rebuild the indexes. Shrink database This peratin keeps the transactin lg file at an ptimal size ensuring it desn't get t big (as happens t ver 90% f users) and saving n disk data space. It als avids crashes (ccurring due t disk cmpletely used by lg file) and keeps the data base mving faster. This peratin has t be executed after the last transactin lg backup and befre the next database backup.it ccurs everyday at 21:30. Update statistics SQL Manage imprves MS SQL Server perfrmance by keeping statistics f which tables were accessed when and thrugh which rutes. It then enables SQL Server t try and use thse same rutes and nt cmpute them every time. This peratin executes everyday at 04:30. Mnitring SQL Manage mnitrs yur databases and servers in the backgrund, and ntifies yu via email and/r pp-ups f prblems that might lead t failures. This ccurs in real-time. It's imprtant t nte that the "SQL Manage Mnitr" must be activated, in rder t receive pp-up ntificatins.
