Thanks to experimental psychology and cerebral imaging, we have discovered «a brain which reasons», which makes mistakes, stops itself, corrects its mistakes and reconfigures its networks, a brain which seeks out the new by inhibiting the old or the usual. It «learns to resist»! This conference will allow us to understand how, from a young age, human beings think, construct their reasoning and test their hypotheses. Reasoning is not only the key to science education but also to learning at school in general. 11h30 13h Cocktail-lunch 13h-14h: return to the CIEP 14h 18h, workshops: 3 groups Introduction to the inquiry approach in science and technology 14h-16h: 1 - Hands-on session: the participants will practice a scientific hands-on activity according to the principles proposed by La main à la pâte and to the various aspects of the inquiry-based approach in science and technology 2 - Analysis of the session with regard to the teaching practices used in the participants countries 16h-16h30: coffee break 16h30-18h: 3 - Exchanges on the implementation of the inquiry-based science approach in class (in kindergarten, primary and secondary school) 4 - Preparation of the class visits planned for the following day Speakers: Frédéric PEREZ, David WILGENBUS, Alain CHOMAT Free-time for dinner and evening

The reflection will bear on the relationship between the practice of science and the uses of oral and written language during scientific inquiry. In connection with this reflection, we will devise instructional activities for primary school science classes. First of all, participants will share a situational exercise that will let them identify the place, nature and role of written and oral language as tools for the structuring of scientific thinking. Second, participants will discuss instructional practices that are susceptible of favoring better learning in science and language; e.g., the conception and exploitation of a student s experimental logbook. The discussion will take place both in smaller groups and during the analysis of existing actions and practices, as well as of theoretical elements of reflection. For the participants, it will be the time for making up an inventory of the local structures existing in their country, and for planning priority actions for the concrete implementation of such a project. Speakers: David JASMIN, Laurence CONSTANTINI, Frédéric PEREZ 10h30-11h: coffee break 11h-12h15: continuation of the workshops 12h30-14h : lunch at the CIEP 14h - 15h30 : The evaluation of the French pupils skills in science Sandra Andreu will present the results of a national evaluation led in 2013 by the DEPP ((The assessment, forecasting and performance Directorate of Ministry of Education) allowing to analyze how evolve, since 2007, the skills of the French pupils aged 10 in the field of the experimental sciences. The practical side of the implementation of the evaluation (what was estimated, how the evaluation was organized, the profile of the pupils and the concerned teachers ) will be developed. One of the objectives would be that the participants can reuse elements of this presentation and concrete examples of situations of evaluation. Speaker: Sandra ANDREU 14h 17h Open-space: discussions topics brought up by the participants During this session dedicated to exchanges and discussions, the participants will have the opportunity to bring up discussion topics of their concerns, not treated during the rest of the seminar. Three 1 hour sessions will take place in parallel, allowing to discuss up to 3 different issues.
