3 EXCEPTIONAL MASTER S DEGREE FOR INTERNATIONAL CAREERS THE LAW FACULTY OF THE PARIS-DESCARTES UNIVERSITY Graduates coming from Emirati Universities, as well as future Diplomats, senior military personnel, businessmen or researchers who are keen to extend their international outlook and experience can find, in Abu Dhabi, a complete range of courses which will prepare them for an operational life or for a research environment. Two outstanding French Universities sharing the same campus The Sorbonne Abu Dhabi Campus presently provides in Abu Dhabi the combined experience of two great French Universities. That of the Paris-Sorbonne University dedicated to Arts and Humanities, and that of the Paris-Descartes University, for Law & Political Science and Economics & Management. The International Law, Diplomacy and International Relations curriculum is organised by the Law faculty of Paris- Descartes University A two years Degree course The first year of the curriculum is centred on fundamental subjects. A total of 450 hours are dedicated to Law, to the History of Diplomacy and International Relations, to Geopolitics and to foreign Languages. The second year students will specialize in either in a Professional Master s Degree in International Business Lawyer, or in Professional Master s Degree in Sustainable Development Law. A curriculum intended for high flyers and exceptional students Each class will have a maximum of 30 students, either University graduates or coming from professional life. This dual origin of the students is important, allowing the mix of good academics and of professionals interested in furthering their education in the field of International Relations. A rigorous selection process guarantees the diploma s value and allows each student to expand his or her professional network. A time and a place for communication and expanding thought process Beyond the lectures and seminars, students will be able to participate in workshops organised by active life professionals, or well known personalities, drawn from the Diplomacy, Politics or business environment. A well structured curriculum, opened to English speakers Lectures will be in English and if ever in French, simultaneous translation into English will be provided. Classes will take place in the afternoon, after 3.30 pm, thus allowing professionals to keep their normal activities, as well as pursuing their studies. A unique teaching method Beyond the lectures content, and the teaching languages used, the specific reasoning approach, the analytical tools, the sense of synthesis, the critical method, the teaching style are all unique, and part of the great tradition of the French University. It is one of three law faculties located inside Paris, all being the post 1968 daughters of the old Paris Law Faculty. It is particularly suited to the curriculum offered in Abu Dhabi, through its own international outlook, as demonstrated by the numerous co-operation agreements signed with a large number of foreign Universities, its substantial number of visiting professors, and its student body of an equally international origin. Several member of its Faculty have practical international experience through their roles as diplomats, consultants, international magistrates or arbitration tribunal judges. The University provides specialised curricula in European and International law, as well as international trade law. As such it runs the Institute of European and Comparative Law. 1 2

4 Year 1 Master I ACQUIRE AN INTERNATIONAL OUTLOOK: Year 2 Master II WIDEN YOUR PROFESSIONAL EXPERTISE OR STRENGTHEN YOUR ANALITICAL SKILLS Legal principles and international relations, history and geopolitics of the contemporary world Classes taught during the first year will relate to the basics of International Law and Relations. These fundamentals underpin a career in the international sphere. Lectures will present the principles of International Public or Private Domain Laws and International Relations. They will be followed by classes on the major issues of modern International Relations: the financial and economic context, the international trade (through the aspects of exchanges of goods, of services, and mobility of capital) and the corresponding framework Institutions, such as WTO, IMF, World Bank, etc. This will be followed by presentations of the organisational aspects of modern society, and the resolution of disputes. This will be concluded by a description of new international practical and legal evolutions such as the International Court of Justice, sustainable development concepts, etc. The historical and geopolitical environment of the International Relations will be described, being an essential part of an international understanding. The curriculum will be spread over 450 hours, made up of 270 hours for the International Relations basic principles and the specialised legal concepts, 120 hours for the historical facts, techniques and diplomatic tools, 30 hours for Geopolitical analysis, and 30 hours for foreign language introduction. The year will be divided in two semesters. Attendance to lectures is mandatory. Evaluation of students will be made through exams (written or oral) at the end of each semester. A minimum average mark of 10 will translate in being granted a Paris-Descartes University Master I Degree in International Law, Diplomacy and International Relations. The degree will provide access to the second year Master s II Degree. Second year students, will be able to opt for a Master s II degree in International Business Lawyer or Sustainable Development Law granted by Paris-Descartes University. Professional Master s II Degree Option 1: International Business Lawyer This second year of the International Business Lawyer Master trains the students for international law practice in relation to international business. Arbitration, contracts, finance, comparative law, intellectual property law and competition law are the major subjects. The student will also present a master dissertation or a report on a two to three months internship either in an international organization, institution, business or in company, in a law firm in the UAE or outside the country. Professional & Research Master s II degree Option 2: Sustainable Development Law The Master II degree in Sustainable Development Law Programme has an innovative professional curriculum and prepares students with Concept of sustainable development, Social aspect of sustainable development in relation to labor law and companies liability, Economic and financial dimension of sustainable development, Non legal themes in relation to geography in a wide sense, International Law aspects & Space management. Students will attend several seminars conducted by professionals from sustainable development activity followed by a three months internship in the UAE or abroad. The student will also present a Master dissertation or a report on a topic indentified with a professor. 3 4

5 PRACTICAL INFORMATION 1. Study duration Courses are spread over 2 years, 5 days a week, from October to the following June. Classes will take place in the afternoon, after 3.30pm, so as to allow the continuation in parallel with a professional activity. 2. Admittance criteria Lectures will be in English and if ever in French, simultaneou translation into English will be provided Candidates must have a degree following a three years tertiary education cycle. Alternatively, candidates can apply with a written justification of a minimum of 5 years professional experience in the field.
