1 Mentor/ Mentee Exercise 1: Scheduling and Time Management Daria (High School Sophomore) Female, 15 years old Classes taken on a rotating block schedule: Classes are rotated through a two week time period. Students attend classes at different intervals over the 2 weeks, enabling the student to spend a longer block of class time per subject, yet maintain the overall required hours per course. For this exercise, we will assume that Daria rotates through all of her classes in one week. Algebra. English Composition Personal Fitness Physical Science Nutrition (Elective) Agricultural Science (Elective) Home Room Hall Lunch MWF 11:30am to 12:30pm T TH 8:30am to 9:30am Exam on Thursday MWF 7:30am to 8:30am T TH 12:30pm to 1:30pm MWF 9:30am to 10:30am T TH 11:30am to 12:30pm Pop quiz every week never the same day of the week MWF 8:30am to 9:30am T TH 9:30am to 10:30am T TH 1:30pm to 2:20pm Food Diary Project Due on Tuesday written paper [2 pages] oral presentation [4-5 minutes] MWF 1:30pm to 2:20pm M-F 7:00am to 7:30am T TH 7:30am to 8:30am MWF 12:30pm to 1:30pm M-F 10:30am to 11:30am 1. Daria lives with her parents and her younger brother. 2. She must meet the bus each morning at 6:30am. It is a 20-minute ride to her high school. 3. She does not have a job, but she is responsible for a long list of household chores, as both her parents work long hours, some days until 8pm. 4. She arrives home from school each day at approximately 2:45pm. 5. She is president of the dance club. She meets with them after school each Tuesday until 5:30pm. 6. She catches the activity bus home and arrives at her house at approximately 6:00pm. 7. She attends church every Sunday from 9:00am to 11:00am. 8. She participates in the church youth group every Sunday evening from 6:00pm to 8:30pm. A light dinner is usually served at the youth group meetings. 9. Math is her toughest subject, so Physical Science is a challenge as well. 10. She loves to read and write. 11. Because she is extremely self-conscious, public speaking is her biggest fear.
2 When creating a schedule for Daria, ask yourself: What time does Daria need to get up each morning? Can this time be used to her advantage? When will she do chores? What chores do you think she has on her list? When will she study? What will be her biggest challenges this week? What is your best advice for Daria at this point?

He lives with his sister Sally and her two children, Doug 7 and Daria 14. He has responsibility to watch the kids from 3-7 on Tuesdays and Thursdays when Sally has to work. 4. He spent a year in France as an exchange student, so his language class is fairly easy for him. 5. Writing has always been difficult. Jorge earned a C- on his last Biology exam.
5 When creating a schedule for Jorge, ask yourself: Where is Jorge s potential conflict? How should he handle this situation? What happens if his work schedule changes? What happens if his sister s work schedule changes to include more hours? Are there any other possible landmines in Jorge s schedule? Is Jorge being realistic about his time and capabilities? What is your best advice for Jorge at this point?
