2 What is UACES? The University Association for Contemporary European Studies (UACES) provides an independent forum for informed debate and discussion of European affairs and is directly involved in promoting research and teaching in European Studies. UACES is one of the world s premier European Studies associations. The Association has a rapidly expanding membership of individual and corporate members of whom 25% are from outside of the UK. Since 1969, UACES has brought together academics involved in researching and teaching on Europe with practitioners active in European affairs. It encourages the involvement of people from a variety of disciplines which have a European emphasis. UACES has a full calendar of events which include conferences, workshops and study groups. The UACES Annual Conference is the organisation s flagship event. The 2005 Annual Conference: The European Union: Past and Future Enlargements will be held in Zagreb, Croatia. This promises to be a huge success and it is anticipated that the conference will attract up to 300 delegates. Delegates and speakers typically come from over 20 countries, including all over Europe, the USA, Canada and Japan. The conference, which is normally held in the United Kingdom, comprises a number of plenary sessions as well as a keynote lecture by a prominent practitioner engaged in one of the leading European contemporary issues of the day. Recent speakers have included Andrew Duff MEP, Lord Kerr, former Secretary-General of the European Convention, and Sir David Edward, former judge at the European Court of Justice.
