1 Designing a Sustainable Future through School Community Collaboration Final Conference of the Comenius Lifelong Learning Network CoDeS Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain, May 21-23rd, 2014 Communities are at risk in many parts of our world as a consequence of globalization. Schools are key institutions in many communities needing to face the challenges of an uncertain future. The collaboration between schools and communities appear fundamental to facilitate a sustainable development at a local as well as global level. CoDeS network (School Community Collaboration for Sustainable Development), and the Autonomous University of Barcelona welcome you to join the CoDeS Final Conference in Barcelona, May rd, This conference builds on the activities and themes of the 3 year Comenius Lifelong Learning Network CoDeS and will become a place for exchanges of experiences on how to promote successful collaboration between schools and communities when working for Sustainable Development. An optional Post-Conference Seminar targeted to researchers and practitioners at the beginning of their career will conclude the Conference. Conference target group: Environmental educators from NGO; Representatives from Educational and Environmental Departments of Municipalities; Educational policy makers; Junior and senior researchers in Education, EE and ESD; Private Sector representatives involved in school community collaboration; students from higher education institutions; and School teachers and headmasters. Conference language: English. There will be translation to Spanish and English on Thursday 22 nd in the afternoon sessions. Submission of proposals: Participants are encouraged to submit proposals to either the Conference and/or the Post-Conference Seminar. The proposals submitted to the Conference will be in Poster Format only dealing with any aspect of school community collaboration for Sustainable Development. There will be three poster formats: (a) Specific themes poster, (b) Case poster, and (c) Research poster. The proposals submitted to the Post-Conference Seminar will be in Short Communication format only dealing with any aspect of ESD research. Please refer to Guidelines for proposal submission for details on how to write the proposals for either the Conference or the Post-Conference Seminar to be found in CoDeS website: and the ENSI website: The deadline for submission of proposals for either the Conference or the Post-Conference Seminar is January 15th, The results of the review outcomes and proposal acceptance will be communicated by February 15th, Venue: The conference will take place at the Hotel Campus located in the Autonomous University of Barcelona, campus of Bellaterra: The venue is easily accessible and it takes 35 minutes by train to the centre of Barcelona city: On Thursday 22 nd in the afternoon the conference will take place in the Natural Sciences Museum of Barcelona (The Blue Museum): Fee: The conference fee is 300 /pers (including 3 lunches, 2 dinners and conference materials). There is a special conference fee for students 150 /pers (including 3 lunches, 2 dinners and conference materials). The participation in the Post-Conference Seminar is free and it is not included in any of the Conference fees modalities.

2 Accommodation: There will be three types of accommodation: two-bed apartments, two-bed rooms, and private free housing. Attendees are encouraged to share rooms to lower accommodation costs, if necessary. Arrangements for private free accommodation will be made upon availability for those attendees in need. Please refer to the CoDeS Conference Accommodation Guide for details on the accommodation format and fill in the selected CoDeS Booking Form to be found in CoDeS website: The deadline for accommodation booking is March 23 rd, Registration: Please fill in the CoDeS Registration Form to be found in CoDeS website: The deadline for registration to either the Conference or the Post-Conference Seminar is March 23 rd, 2014 EU funding: CoDeS Final Conference is part of the CoDeS LLP Network activities with the reference LLP CH-COMENIUS-CNW/ Due to the change from Lifelong Learning Program to ERASMUS+ Program at the beginning of the next year, no final information on EU-funding and their funding frames is available yet. Participants are asked to contact their national agencies for the new funding regulations and deadlines for application, bearing in mind that deadline may be different from one country to another. Information is foreseen by beginning of November Conference host: Autonomous University of Barcelona with the collaboration of the Ministry of Territory and Sustainability of the Government of Catalonia, and the Natural Sciences Museum of Barcelona (The Blue Museum). 3 About the Conference Objectives The goal of the conference is to provide an interactive space to learn from each other and to be encouraged and strengthened to fostering local sustainable development collaboratively i.e. schools, education actors and community - especially in times of rapid change and crisis. Findings from CoDeS network will be presented and shared so that they can become potential tools to promote collaboration between schools and communities committed to SD. Through interactive participatory formats attendees will identify the key challenges schools and communities face when working together at the entrance of UNESCO post decade. Methodology Through lectures, round tables, group work, and discussions conference participants will identify the key challenges schools and communities face when working together to develop high quality ESD at the entrance of UNESCO post decade. The key note speakers will be the following: Rolf Jucker from Switzerland, Kartikeya Sarabhai from India, Lucie Sauvé from Canada, Arjen Wals from the Netherlands. The products developed within CoDeS aiming at providing tools for school community collaboration practitioners will be presented and discussed. Those include a Travelling Guide, a Quality Criteria Framework, a Tool Box, an Isolated Communities Survey, a Digital Handbook, and an e-platform. Follow up The results of the conference will be published and disseminated and there will be a follow up for the participants willing to explore the possibilities of CoDeS tools in their own contexts. 4 Thursday May 22nd, 2014: Reflecting on school community collaboration for SD through the use of CoDeS products Key note speakers will provide inputs on high quality school community collaboration and successful experiences will also be presented and discussed. Participants will start working on Parallel workshops Part I and will engage into a dynamic work on CoDeS products so that new networks of practice can be developed. This session will be developed in the Blue Museum of Barcelona and will be open to local teachers, environmental educators and educational administrators. 5 Post Conference Activity Research Seminar on ESD, in collaboration with the ENSI network: Research on ESD after the UN decade: Trends and News (Venue UAB) The seminar is addressed to ESD research practitioners being them junior or seniors at any stage of their research career. The seminar aims at exploring new lines for research and innovation in ESD as a whole, not necessarily related to School Community Collaboration, and will offer the possibility to debate ideas and proposals with a group of senior researchers in ESD participating in the Conference. 15:30-16:00 Introduction to the seminar: the value of research for ESD in the ENSI network 16:00-17:30 Workshops: Examples of ESD research during the UN Decade 17:30-18:00 Coffee/tea break 18:00-18:45 Reporting and debating: What are the future needs of ESD research after the UN decade? 18:45-19:30 Conclusions: The contribution of the CoDeS Research on School Community Collaboration to ESD future research.

6 Key Note Speakers Kartikeya V. Sarabhai Centre for Environment Education (CEE), India Kartikeya V. Sarabhai is the Founder Director of the Centre for Environment Education (CEE), established in 1984 as a centre of excellence of the Ministry of Environment and Forest, Government of India. CEE is the Nodal Agency for implementation of UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (UNDESD) in India. He is a member of the UNESCO Reference Group for UNDESD as well as a member of the International Steering Group for the End of the Decade Conference He is the editor in chief of the Journal of Education for Sustainable Development. He received the Tree of Learning Award from The World Conservation Union in 1998 in appreciation of his contributions to the field of environ mental education and communication. In 2005, The Indian Institute of Human Rights presented Mr. Sarabhai with the World Human Rights Promotion Awa rd. The Government of India awarded the Padma Shri in 2012, one of the country s highest civilian awards in recognition of his exceptional and distinguished service in the field of Environmental Education. In 2013, he was given the Olive Green Crusader award by IAA (International Advertising Association) for his contribution in the field of environmental education and education for sustainable development. Arjen Wals Wageningen University and UNESCO Chair, The Netherlands Arjen Wals is a Professor of Social Learning and Sustainable Development at Wageningen University in The Netherlands and a UN ESCO Chair in the same field. He is also an Adjunct Faculty member of the Department of Natural Resources of Cornell University and the current Director of the Centre for Sustainable Development and Food Security based at Wageningen Unversity. A central question in his work is how to create conditions that support new forms of learning, research and outreach that take full advantage of the diversity, creativity and resourcefulness that is all around us, but so far remains largely untapped in our search for a world that is more sustainable than the one currently in prospect. Popular books include: 'Higher Education and the Challenge of Sustainability (2004), Social Learning towards a Sustainable World (2007) and Learning for Sustainability in Times of Accelerating Change (2012). He also wrote two UNESCO-commissioned evaluation reports of the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (DESD) and co-edited the first international Handbook on Environmental Education Research (2013). Lucie Sauvé Centre de recherche en éducation et formation relatives à l environnement et à l écocitoyenneté, UQAM, Canada Lucie Sauvé is a professor at the Didactics Department of the Faculty of Education, Université du Québec à Montréal (UQÀM). She is the director of the Research Centre on Environmental and Ecocitizenship Education and Training, and member of the Environmental Sciences Institute. She is the main editor of the International Journal Éducation relative à l environnement Regards, Recherches, Réflexions. Her main research interests are related with the critical and political dimensions of education; the dynamics of citizens activism in relation to the environment and eco development; science, technology, and environmental health education; and the challenges of environmental and community educators training. Since the last 20 years, Lucie Sauvé coordinates collaborative interuniversity ecosocial action projects in Latin America. Rolf Jucker Kaospilot teamleader and consultant in learning for sustainability, Switzerland Rolf Jucker is currently a teamleader at Kaospilots Switzerland ( and working as learning for sustainability consultant for changels ( Previously, he ran the department of ESD development at the Swiss Foundation for ESD ( For the previous 5 years he was director of the Swiss Foundation for Environmental Education, an independent body tasked with the mainstreaming of Environmental Education and ESD in the Swiss school system. Having gained an MSc in Education for Sustainability, he has worked extensively as an international ESD advisor and has widely published on the subject (see rolfjucker.net), amongst others Our Common Illiteracy.
