GENERAL PSYCHOLOGY (PSYC&100.09) Curse Syllabus Welcme t the exciting wrld f psychlgy! Curse: PSYC&100 Sectin 09 Day/Time/Lcatin: M/W 6:00 pm-9:00 pm SAM0200 Required Textbk: Griggs, R. A. (2012). Psychlgy: A Cncise Intrductin (3 rd Editin). New Yrk: Wrth Publishers. Curse Overview This is an intrductry curse designed t intrduce yu t the brad field f psychlgy. The textbk and class sessins will uncver basic, intrductry terms, cncepts, principles and theries related t the scientific study f behavir and mental prcesses. Fr sme f yu, this class will lay a schlarly fundatin fr ther psychlgy curses and prfessinal experiences. Fr thers f yu, the class may primarily enhance yur understanding f yurself and thers and assist yu in becming a wise cnsumer f psychlgical infrmatin and services. In either case, I believe that all f yu can discver ways t persnally benefit frm the curse by applying psychlgical principles t the wrld arund yu. Cntact Infrmatin Krystle Balhan Archibald, Ph.D. Instructr Office: BE 4129 Phne: 206-934-0955 Email: KArchibald@SCCD.CTC.EDU Website: http://facweb.nrthseattle.edu/karchibald Office Hrs: By appintment 1 f 7

Curse Gals and Objectives Students will gain an appreciatin fr the breadth f tpics, subfields, and ccupatins within the field f Psychlgy. Students will be expsed t an verview f majr findings and current thinking abut a brad range f tpics in Psychlgy. Students will acquire a basic understanding f histrically and currently imprtant theries in ur field, and an increased ability t think critically abut them. Students will acquire a basic understanding f the use f the scientific methd in histrical and current psychlgical investigatins. Students will acquire basic tls fr becming critical cnsumers f psychlgical research as well as psychlgical infrmatin presented in the ppular media. Curse Expectatins It is my intent t make this class a learner-centered experience. As students in the class, yu are respnsible fr yur wn learning. Evaluatins (examinatins, writing assignments) are used t prmte persnal grwth and learning, nt merely t earn grades. What yu actually derive frm this curse will be a functin f ur cmbined effrts. I cmmit t yu my best effrt, and trust I can expect the same frm thse enrlled in this class. Preparatin fr class: If yu have read the material prir t the class sessin, it will be much easier t fllw alng and nt merely scramble t take ntes. In additin, it is impssible fr us t cver all the pertinent infrmatin in lecture, s the text is necessary t prvide cntext, fill in gaps, and stimulate yur thinking. Reviewing the previus class lecture ntes is als part f yur preparatin fr every class perid. Attending Class: Althugh attendance is yur respnsibility, I expect that students wh are serius abut their educatin will make every effrt t attend class. If fr sme unexpected circumstance yu are unable t attend class n a given day, it is yur respnsibility t speak with a classmate abut what yu missed. Als, tardiness is a disruptin t yur fellw classmates and will nt be tlerated. Yu will find that attendance is als helpful in that many test questins will be frm class discussin, vides, and demnstratins that cannt be fund frm the text alne. Envirnment f mutual respect: Because I believe that an envirnment f respect fsters learning, I prmise t be respectful f yu, yur time, yur learning, and yur questins. I ask that yu als be respectful f me, yur classmates, and ur time tgether. Any disruptive behavir such as persnal cnversatins, disrespectful side cmments abut thers' questins, wrking in class n material nt related t the curse, receiving text messages, etc. will nt be tlerated. If yu are being disruptive in class, I will ask yu t leave. I d this nt ut f cruelty but ut f respect fr the students wh are in class t learn. 2 f 7

Participatin in class: Yur questins are invaluable in helping me direct the curse in a way that is mst useful t yu. I strngly encurage questins and class discussin; simply raise yur hand if yu have smething t share. Additinally, actively engaging in the material and thinking abut hw the tpics relate t yur life and experiences enhances learning and retentin (see the Memry sectin in yur bk!). Academic Integrity: All wrk yu turn in fr this class must be yur wn wrk. Plagiarism and ther frms f cheating are abslutely unacceptable at the cllege level and will nt be tlerated in this envirnment. Any student wh cheats r turns in plagiarized wrk will be penalized per instructr discretin. Cnsequences fr plagiarism may include: 1) requiring that a piece f writing be revised t eliminate the plagiarism, 2) denying credit fr a piece f writing in which plagiarism has been fund, 3) recrding a 0 grade in the student s class recrd fr this prject r paper, thereby lwering the student s final grade, and 4) frwarding the student s name t the Vice President fr Student Services fr pssible further actin. Fr further discussin f cheating, plagiarism, and pssible penalties, please cnsult yur Student Cde f Cnduct. Please nte that ignrance f what cnstitutes "plagiarism" r "cheating" will nt be an acceptable defense. In general, academic hnesty means taking credit nly fr wrk that is fully yur wn as well as nt allwing ther students t take credit fr yur wrk. Obvius prhibitins are lking at smene else s answers n a test and cpying smene else s writing assignment. Changing a few wrds r sentences in a writing assignment des nt make it yur wn; the wrk must be cmpletely yurs. Curse Requirements and Grading Examinatins Unit Exams (300 pints): There will be three multiple-chice/shrt answer exams wrth 100 pints each. Each f the exams has tw parts: a multiple chice sectin cntaining 45 questins wrth tw pints each and a shrt answer sectin cntaining 2 questins wrth five pints each. Exams will draw frm material cvered in the bk (including sidebars, bxes, etc), lectures, guest speakers, vides, and anything else cvered in class. This includes material that class members cntribute during discussins r in respnse t questins. Exams are partially cumulative; each unit exam can cntain up t 10 questins frm any f the prir unit exams. 3 f 7

Cmprehensive Final Exam (Replaces lwest exam): In additin t the three exams, an ptinal, cmprehensive final exam will be ffered at the end f the semester. This exam will include material cvered thrughut the entire curse, and it will replace yur lwest exam grade. There is n risk t taking this cumulative Final exam if yur scre n the cumulative exam is lwer than any f yur ther exam scres, it will nt affect yur final grade. Make-Up Exams: Alternate exam times will be given ONLY when participatin in a university rganizatin cnflicts with a scheduled test. In this case, yu must meet with me during the first three weeks f class t g ver yur event schedule and discuss any cnflicts. Yu must als ntify me 1 week in advance f the scheduled exam t schedule an alternate time. Yu must als shw dcumentatin f the scheduling cnflict (a cpy f yur swim meet schedule, a nte frm yur debate cach, etc). In ALL OTHER circumstances (illness, funeral, slept thrugh alarm, etc) yur nly pprtunity t make up a missed exam is t take the cumulative final. In this case, yur missed exam will becme yur lwest scre and will thus be drpped. Writing Assignments At-Hme Writing Assignments (150 pints): During the semester yu must cmplete 3 at-hme writing assignments wrth 50 pints each. These assignments will be annunced in class and will be psted n http:// facweb.nrthseattle.edu/karchibald. Assignments must be submitted in class in paper frm by the due date. Sme writing assignments may require yu t implement smething in yur life, making it impssible t write the assignment the night befre it s due. Make sure yu check the assignment well ahead f time s that yu give yurself enugh time t cmplete the required activity as well as write the paper. It is yur respnsibility t ensure each assignment is submitted in class and received n-time. In-Class Mini-Writing Assignments (50 pints): Yu will be asked t write 5 shrt respnses r reflectins f curse material and tpics thrughut the curse f the semester. These in-class writing assignments will be wrth 10 pints each and will be graded based n effrt and/r accuracy withut regard t grammar, spelling, r ther frmal assessments f writing. There are n mini-writing make-ups because there will be mre mini-writings prvided that the required number f pints. 4 f 7
