INTRODUCTION The Internship Prgrams in Nutritin and Dietetics at Life University is a 9-mnth (41 weeks/1640 hurs f didactic (360 hurs) and supervised practice experience (1200 hurs) pst baccalaureate prgram. The prgram prvides interns with the necessary knwledge & skills t be eligible t sit fr the natinal registratin exam fr dietitians and t pursue a variety f career pprtunities in the field f dietetics. Up t sixteen interns can be admitted t the prgram, which starts the first week f September, and is cmpleted by June f each year. The Internship Prgrams in Nutritin and Dietetics at Life University has tw ptins t select frm and they are as fllws: Nn-Degree Optin: The prspective interns pting fr this track will be eligible fr financial aid and the tuitin is $8,000. Graduate Degree Optin: A. MS in Clinical Nutritin: The interns f the Life University Internship Prgrams in Nutritin and Dietetics have the pprtunity t apply t the Master s Degree in Clinical Nutritin and receive 9-transfer credits frm the Internship Prgrams in Nutritin and Dietetics tward cmpletin f this degree. B. MS in Sprt Health Science: The interns f the Life University Internship Prgrams in Nutritin and Dietetics have the pprtunity t apply t the Master s Degree in Sprts Health Science with a cncentratin in nutritin and receive 16 credits frm the Internship Prgrams in Nutritin and Dietetics tward cmpletin f this degree (12 credits: fr cmpletin f the Internship Prgrams in Nutritin and Dietetics and 4 credits: fr cmpletin f Independent Study). If the Graduate Degree Optin is selected, a prspective intern must apply t the Master s Prgram separately. The tw prgrams are nt cmbined, therefre, acceptance t ne des nt guarantee acceptance int the ther. In rder t be accepted t either, the prspective intern must meet the admissin requirements fr the particular prgram. If Graduate Optin A is selected, a prspective intern will nly have t pay fr 43 credit hurs t btain the Master s Degree in Clinical Nutritin (MS requires 52 credit hurs). If Graduate Optin B is selected, a prspective intern will nly have t pay fr 36 credit hurs t btain the Master s Degree in Sprt Health Science (MS requires 52 credit hurs). NOTE: The prspective intern must nt wrk r take classes that cnflict with the Internship Prgrams in Nutritin and Dietetics hurs. PROGRAM PHILOSOPHY The Department f Nutritin designed the Internship Prgrams in Nutritin and Dietetics t share knwledge and prvide sund training t dietetic prfessinals in rder t meet the increasing demand fr nutritin experts. As students f the Internship Prgrams in Nutritin and Dietetics at Life University, ne will receive a variety f experiences fcused n clinical, management, and cmmunity nutritin. The prgram is nine mnths in duratin and will include instructinal and wrk related experiences. Upn cmpletin f the prgram, the student will have been expsed t the entire scpe f practice in dietetics and will have a wrking knwledge f clinical, cmmunity, and administrative dietetics with an emphasis in clinical. 3

MISSION STATEMENT OF THE INTERNSHIP PROGRAM The missin f the Internship Prgrams in Nutritin and Dietetics is t supprt the Life University missin and prvide practical experience and training fr the interns, s that the prgram graduates will have the knwledge and skills t effectively meet the respnsibilities f nutritinal services in cmmunity, clinical, managerial psitins and becme leaders in their chsen field. Upn cmpletin f the prgram and receipt f the Verificatin Statement, the graduates will pass the Natinal Registratin Examinatin fr dietitians. The missin f the Internship Prgrams in Nutritin and Dietetics is t als prepare graduates academically and prfessinally s that they may integrate, apply, and practice theretical knwledge necessary t prvide quality nutritinal care in a cst effective manner, pursue innvatins and leadership, bth in the wrk place and in prfessinal assciatins. Upn cmpletin f the prgram, the graduates will be eligible t take the registratin examinatin fr dietitians. 4

PROGRAM GOALS Gal #1 1. Graduates f the Internship Prgrams in Nutritin and Dietetics (IP), will pass the natinal registratin exam fr dietitians and be qualified and prepared fr a variety f career pprtunities in the field f dietetics. Success Criterin t Assess Gal # 1: Gal #1 is assessed by mnitring the: 1a. percentage f interns wh enter the prgram and cmplete the prgram within 150% f the time planned fr cmpletin. 1b. percentage f IP graduates wh take the Registered Dietitian (RD) exam and pass n the first attempt. 1c. percentage f IP graduates wh take the RD exam and pass n the secnd attempt. Gal #2 2. Graduates f the Internship Prgrams in Nutritin and Dietetics (IP) wh desire emplyment will btain a psitin in the field f dietetics and will have the knwledge and skills t effectively meet the respnsibilities f the psitin. Success Criterin t Assess Gal # 2: Gal #2 is assessed by mnitring the: 2a. percentage f IP graduates wh btain a psitin in the field f dietetics within 6 mnths f graduatin. 2b. percentage f IP graduates wh start their first psitin as a Registered Dietitian feel well prepared fr the psitin. 2c. percentage f IP graduate s emplyers feel that they are well prepared fr the psitin. Gal #3 3. Graduates f the Internship Prgrams in Nutritin and Dietetics (IP) will integrate theretical knwledge int applicatin/practice by cmpleting research prjects and will apply current research infrmatin int practice. Success Criterin t Assess Gal # 3: Gal #3 is assessed by mnitring the: 3a. percentage f IP graduates wh incrprate scientific knwledge and evidence based research int their practice. 3b. percentage f IP graduate s emplyers wh acknwledged that their emplyees incrprate scientific knwledge and evidence based research int their practice. Graduates f the Internship Prgrams in Nutritin and Dietetics (IP) will develp skills and mtivatin t pursue life lng learning s they can meet the requirements f cntinuing educatin f the Cmmissin n Dietetic Registratin. Success Criterin t Assess Gal # 4: Gal #4 is assessed by mnitring the: 4a. percentage f IP graduates wh apply t advanced degrees within 3 years f graduatin. 4b. percentage f IP graduates wh keep current with their registratin and licensing within 3 years f graduatin. 4c. percentage f IP graduates wh set up prfessinal develpment plans. 5

FINANCIAL AID Financial aid is available fr the Internship Prgrams in Nutritin and Dietetics. Fr mre infrmatin, cntact Melissa Waters at (770) 426-2901. COST TO STUDENT 1. The tuitin fee is $8,000. This fee will include instructin as well as wrk experience 2. Health insurance and prfessinal liability insurance is mandatry. Students must btain insurance cverage prir t admissin t the prgram. Liability insurance can be btained thrugh the Academy f Nutritin and Dietetics at a cst f apprximately $75.00 fr liability and $350.00 fr health fr the nine-mnth duratin. 3. Students are respnsible fr prviding their wn husing, meals, transprtatin and gas csts t/frm rtatin sites. Csts vary based upn preferences. The apprximate cst is estimated t be between $8,000 t 12,000. Infrmatin regarding husing can be btained thrugh the Life University Office f Student Affairs at 770-426-2700. 4. Textbk(s) fr the prgram will average $600.00. 5. White lab cats, stethscpe, sphygmmanmeter, and penlight r flashlight are required ($150). 6. Applicatin fee fr cmputer matching by D&D Digital Systems is $50.00. 7. Applicatin fee t use Dietetic Internship Centralized Applicatin System DICAS is $40 fr the first applicatin and $20 fr each additinal applicatin. 8. Applicatin fee fr prcessing applicatin by Life University is $65.00. 9. Registratin Exam Review ($350-450). Students must either take the review curse within 1 mnth f graduatin r shw the registratin receipt fr payment f the curse in rder fr the Verificatin Statement t be issued at the end f the prgram. 10. Sme rtatin sites may require backgrund checks fr the interns and require the interns t pay fr this cst, which culd be between $20-200. Sme rtatin sites may als require the intern t repeat the TB test and/r any ther immunizatins, which may cst between $15-150. 11. Upn acceptance t the Internship Prgram, 10% f yur tuitin ($800) is required prir t the start f the prgram t secure yur psitin (this is nnrefundable if yu decide nt t cntinue with the internship). 12. Students are required and respnsible fr becming a member f the Academy f Nutritin and Dietetics. The fee is $50.00. CREDENTIALING PROCESS FOR DIETETICS PRACTITIONERS Students are required t g thrugh a sequential three-step prcess t becme a Registered Dietitian. Thse steps are: 1. Cmpletin f the didactic prgram in dietetics with minimum academic requirements as set frth by the Accreditatin Cuncil fr Educatin in Nutritin and Dietetics (ACEND) f the Academy f Nutritin and Dietetics. 2. Cmplete an ACEND accredited internship 3. Pass the Natinal Dietetic Registratin Exam The cmpletin f this prgram fulfills the secnd step in the prcess. This gives the student the cmpetence and eligibility t take the natinal Dietetic Registratin Exam. 6

ACCREDITATION STATUS The Internship Prgrams in Nutritin and Dietetics at Life University has been granted initial accreditatin by the Accreditatin Cuncil fr Educatin in Nutritin and Dietetics (ACEND) f the Academy f Nutritin and Dietetics. Cmpletin f the curse wrk required fr a Didactic Prgrams in Nutritin and Dietetics (DP), which is accredited by the ACEND f the Academy f Nutritin and Dietetics and having cmpleted a Bachelr f Science Degree (transcripts must indicate BS Degree Cmpleted). *If any applicants have graduated mre than 5 years ag, they must take the fllwing curses prir t the start f the Internship Prgrams in Nutritin and Dietetics at Life University: NTR 306 Advanced Nutritin NTR 309 Assessment, Interviewing and Cunseling NTR 311 Fdservice Operatins NTR 401 Nutritin Therapy I NTR 402 Nutritin Therapy II NTR 413 Nutritin Therapy III When cmpleting yur applicatin, yu must include prf f taking these curse r equivalent curses and must be cmpleted by the start f the Internship Prgrams in Nutritin and Dietetics. *If yu are submitting a Declaratin f Intent with yur applicatin, yu must prvide yur Verificatin Statement befre the internship starts. If the Verificatin Statement is dated prir t 1987, yu must prvide a Verificatin Statement indicating that yu have cmpleted current DP requirements (dated after 1987). What are yur strengths and weaknesses r areas needing imprvement? 6. 2 cpies f all fficial final transcripts (if yu have nt cmpleted the BS Degree at the time f sending in the applicatin, yu must bring 2 cpies f the fficial transcripts n the first day f the DI Prgram. 7. DRESS CODE POLICY: The dress cde is an imprtant part f the image we want t present at preceptr sites & rtatins. Dietetic interns are required t wear prfessinal clthes that are neat, clean, and apprpriate in style fr their assigned rtatins. Very casual attire r clthes f extreme style are nt acceptable. Sme clinical and nn-clinical rtatins have mre strict plicies t prtect the welfare f their clients/patients and fr yur safety. ATTENDANCE: The Internship Prgrams in Nutritin and Dietetics at Life University is a full-time, 41-week prgram which starts mid-august thrugh mid-june f each year. The student must be available 8 hurs per day, 5 days per week fr the duratin. Absence and tardiness will nt be allwed. Exceptins will be made fr emergencies up t 6 weeks at the discretin f the prgram directr/department head. The first vilatin (unexcused absence r tardiness f greater than 15 minutes) will result in a verbal warning. The secnd vilatin (unexcused absence r tardiness f greater than 15 minutes) will result in a written warning. The third vilatin (unexcused absence r tardiness f greater than 15 minutes) will result in student s dismissal frm the prgram. A ttal f tw days fr emergencies will be allwed withut having t make up the time. Any ther time ff must be apprved by the prgram directr/department head and will be made up as fllws: -all missed rtatins must be made up as sn as pssible, but make-up rtatins must nt interfere with the scheduled rtatins, and students will need t make arrangements fr make-ups n the weekends r evenings. It is the respnsibility f the student t arrange all missed rtatins with the rtatin site, and each rtatin must be cmpleted befre starting a new rtatin. -all missed lecture r discussin sessins must made up by cmpletin f a special prject assigned by the prgram directr/department head (ex. case study presentatins, literature review presentatin r cmmunity wrk). GRADE POLICY & FEES: Students will receive grades and evaluatin upn cmpletin f each rtatin. Each rtatin will be evaluated at mid-rtatin (may be verbal) and upn cmpletin. Students will cmplete each rtatin successfully and must receive a grade f 85% r higher t be eligible fr graduatin. Rtatins nt cmpleted successfully may be repeated ne additinal time, assuming the student has acceptable attendance and fllwed the prfessinal standards set by the prgram. After the secnd chance, the student may be terminated, if terminated due t attendance prblems, nt fllwing the prfessinal standard, r nt being cmmitted t the prgram, the student will nt be entitled t a refund and is still respnsible fr the remainder f the tuitin. Students are strngly encuraged t ntify the directr/department head f any prblems that may prevent them frm cmpleting the prgram early n. Each student is required t present, bth ral and written, up t eight case studies during the prgram. Students must pass the case studies with a grade f 85% r higher. There will be several written tests given during the prgram. There will be 2 cmprehensive exams given at the end f the prgram, with ne make-up exam. If the intern des nt pass the cmprehensive exam, he/she will be required t take the Registered Dietitian Exam Review curse and prvide prf f attendance in rder t receive the Verificatin Statement. A grade f 85% r higher is required fr passing the tests. Once the intern passes the cmprehensive exam, all rtatins, and cmplete all prjects, a Verificatin Statement will be issued. 14

There will be several prjects, including educatin and management, and a few teaching sessins. All prjects must be cmpleted within the given deadlines. Students shall be regularly infrmed regarding their prgress in the prgram. Students shall be given frmal evaluatin n their prgress at specified intervals thrughut the prgram, within any given unit, segment, rtatin, etc., f a planned learning experience 13. The tuitin fr the prgram is $8000.00. A 10% ($800.00) nn-refundable tuitin is required upn acceptance t the internship prgram t secure the student s psitin. The rest f the tuitin is due during the first week f the prgram. Financial aid in the frm f student lans is available. If the student is unable t pay tuitin in full, it can be paid in three installments f $1950 plus a $75 prcessing fee. The schedule fr the payment is as fllws: $1950 (plus $75 prcessing fee) is due the first week f September, $1950 (plus $75 prcessing fee) is due the secnd week f December, and $1950 (plus $75 prcessing fee) is due the secnd week f March. If a payment is nt received by the end f alltted week, the student will nt be scheduled t cntinue the prgram, and any further delay in payment may lead t dismissal f the student frm the prgram. A verificatin statement regarding the cmpletin f the internship prgram will nt be issued until all fees are paid within 6 weeks f graduatin. Tuitin is nn-refundable. If interns are dismissed frm the prgram due t inapprpriate behavir, any tuitin paid will nt be refunded and the unpaid balance is due within 30 days f dismissal. Immunizatin Plicy: Mst rtatin sites require prf f immunizatins. The interns are respnsible fr prviding prf f immunizatin status f Chicken Px, prf f 2 MMRs (if birth date is after 12/31/56) r immunity t Rubella and Rubella, and prf f a TB skin test dne within the ne mnth prir t start f the prgram. Sme f the rtatin sites require immunizatin f Hepatitis B and may als require yu t repeat the TB skin test. Rtatin Plicy: In selecting rtatin sites and dates, every effrt will be made t accmmdate the student s areas f interest and hme lcatin (mst rtatins are within 5-200 mile radius). Hwever, mst f the rtatin sites are based n the availability f the rtatin sites, the readiness t accept students, and the prir agreement. After the schedule f a rtatin, the date r lcatin will nt be changed unless the rtatin site r prgram crdinatr/directr deems necessary. Interns have the ability t select the self-interest rtatin, which must be submitted t the prgram crdinatr/directr within 30 days prir t the rtatin. Rtatin Exemptin Plicy: A dietetic interns with previus rtatin experience may request exemptin status during the rientatin perid r didactic classrm review. An intern may be exempt frm a rtatin, nly if all the fllwing criteria are met: Step 1 Passed a similar rtatin with anther institutin/prgram can prvide prf f passing grade Step 2 - Successfully cmplete the Life University IP rtatin mdule/simulatin (including written exam) with 85% r better Step 3 Present a case study n the rtatin tpic, prir t the scheduled rtatin If a rtatin is exempt, the dietetic interns may transfer the required supervised practice hurs t anther rtatin, such as cmmunity, self-interest, staff relief, r the like. They als wrk n cmpleting the research part f the curriculum, NTR 470 Nutritin Research I and NTR 471 Research II (ptinal), which is up t 40 hurs. The dietetic interns will be in supervised practice rtatin fr the remainder f the 3 weeks (112 hurs/rtatin) and special interest fr 5 weeks (192 hurs). 17
