Lamplight November-December 2011 FRIENDS OF NURSING NEWSLETTER Jan Jurasic, BSN Dear FON Members, It s November and the holiday season is approaching us. I wish you all the Happiest of Holidays and the best of the New Year. One of the things I ask of all the present members is that you please go to the new website, www.thefon.org, and sign in as a present member. That will be a big help to the website committee. Thanks. We are now part of Giving First. The big day for giving will be December 6. You will be able to give to FON through the website. There is more information in this newsletter about that. This is a way for FON to raise extra fund. Again, thanks. Our next big event will be the McNicholas Emerald Isle of Lights. You have already received your invitation. This should be a fun way to start the holidays and a good opportunity to Christmas shop from the Pots of Gold. We look forward to seeing you there. We are sorry to hear about the death of Ann Percefull. Ann was a life member of Friends of Nursing and was the president in 1989-1990. She was active with the Old Fashioned Christmas Tour at the Phipps Mansion until illness prevented this. We will all miss Ann. Until next time, may your holidays be merry. Sincerely, Janice Jurasic, BSN President Friends of Nursing

Made possible by Community First Foundation, it encourages charitable giving by providing information about local nonprofits and an easy way to support them online. Community First Foundation was originally founded in 1975 as Lutheran Medical Center Foundation and became a community foundation in 1997. GivingFirst is free to nonprofits and permits them to receive online donations without paying a processing or credit card fee. Donors can learn about Friends of Nursing and other local charities before making a donation. To visit GivingFirst and view the Friends of Nursing profile, go to:

4 Friends of Nursing Newsletter http://www.givingfirst.org/fon A Donate Now button can be found on GivingFirst that links directly to FON s profile donation page where someone can just click the button to be directed to where they can make their contribution. Also, the Friends of Nursing web site has a donate button that links directly to GivingFirst. Please take a few minutes and explore this efficient way to support Friends of Nursing. December 06, 2011 will be Colorado Gives Day. On this day donors can use GivingFirst to support their favorite nonprofits. An incentive fund is provided by local businesses through Community First Foundation which provides prorated matching depending on the amount your organization receives of the total giving that day. Please consider a donation to Friends of Nursing on December 06 and watch local media for more about Colorado Gives Day. In 2010 $8.4 million dollars were raised on Colorado Gives Day and 83% of the nonprofits listed with GivingFirst acquired new donors. About the Friends of Nursing Every year since 1981 Friends of Nursing has awarded scholarships to qualifying candidates. A Liaison Education Committee, composed of liaisons to the accredited Colorado nursing schools whose eligibility is designated by the Board, receives and reviews applications and makes recommendations to the Scholarship and Grants committee (SGC). The SGC is composed of the President, President-Elect, 1 st Vice-President, plus four additional FON members. At least three of these must be registered nurses and at least three must not be nurses. This committee is responsible for awarding scholarships and grants to deserving nurses. An annual Spring Scholarship Awards Luncheon is the venue for introduction of Scholars and presentation of their awards. Friends of Nursing were founded in 1981 as Friends of Nursing of the University of Denver, a nonprofit support group for the school s nursing students and programs. When the University phased out its School of Nursing in 1985, the organization was renamed Friends of Nursing and its scope broadened to embrace Colorado s colleges and universities that offer baccalaureate degree programs in nursing. About the ORGANIZATION FON welcomes membership to all who are interested in supporting this vital dimension of health care. Nurses, former nurses and those engaged in health-related fields are just part of the total, which also includes a broad cross-section of other concerned individuals. FON is an all-volunteer organization, governed by elected officers and a Board of Directors. With no office, no paid staff, no overhead, minimal expenses, and 100% volunteer effort, our monies go totally to support Nurse Scholarships. WE WELCOME NEW MEMBERS! Send in your membership application that is located on the last page of this Newsletter today!
