Town President Larry Dominick and store manager Lisa Perez, a Cicero resident, said nearly one quarter of the new jobs have gone to Cicero residents. I can t believe we are finally here. It has been a dream of mine to have Walmart here in Cicero. I love Walmart. I shop at Walmart. And we are glad they are here today. We re very happy that so many local residents were able to find positions at the new store, too. Cicero Celebrates Cinco de Mayo With Mexican Consul General Town President Larry Dominick and the Town of Cicero co-hosted the annual celebration in honor of Cinco de Mayo honoring Mexican Consul General Carlos Jimenez Macias and the Town s Mexican-American community. Estimates had more than 100,000 attending the festivities which began with a welcome from Macias on Friday followed by a weekend of celebrations that included entertainment, food and family carnival rides. Cicero and Walmart officials cut the ribbon on the new 191,000 sq ft Cicero Walmart Supercenter, located at 33rd and Cicero Avenue The store officially opened to the public the following day on Wednesday, May 21 with more than 400 people on staff to greet and serve the store s first customers. Each of the new jobs was created for the 191,000 square-foot facility, located at 33rd and Cicero. From the President s Desk by Cicero Town President Larry Dominick June 14 Dear Cicero residents, When I first took office 10 years ago, I wanted to transform this Town into a New Cicero, with a vibrant economy, safe streets, and a strong outlook to the future. Now, looking at the Town s strong fiscal outlook, national recognition as a safe Town, and new businesses moving in with new jobs for our residents, I m proud to say the vision of the New Cicero is turning into a reality. That point was made very clear on May 21 with the opening of the new Walmart Supercenter. I have wanted a Walmart in our Town for eight years now. I have been a Walmart shopper and look forward to visiting the new Cicero location on 31st and Cicero. I hope you will too. There you will run into many of your neighbors, as nearly a quarter of the 400 new jobs went directly to Cicero residents. Store Manager Lisa Perez said they are still hiring more people and will continue to fill new jobs along the way. I want to make sure and thank the Town s attorney, Michael Del Gado, and our project manager, Craig Pesek, for working tirelessly in negotiations with Walmart to bring them here. +++ Last year, I mentioned that our Cinco de Mayo celebration gets better and better. Last month, I talked about how great the festival would be. Today, I can tell you that this year s festival not only lived up to my expectations but surpassed them. I really enjoy our many festivals and events that celebrate the many cultures that make up this Town and Cinco de Mayo s celebration of the Mexican- American heritage not only makes it one of my personal favorites but has really become one of the premier events for the holiday throughout the Chicagoland area. And this month, we have another fantastic event with AmericanFest. It is no secret I believe we live in greatest country in the world. Having AmericanFest less than two months after Cinco de Mayo reinforces that belief as we see a growing number of people wanting to live in this nation from all corners of the Earth. This year s festival should be spectacular, with a great carnival, food, fantastic entertainment and a thrilling fireworks show on Sunday. I hope to see you all there at the end of June for this wonderful event! +++++ While the weather doesn t seem to agree with the calendar, we are nearing the end of Spring and starting to head into Summer. One of the signs of Spring in Cicero has been our annual Keep Cicero CLEAN week and Town-wide Clean-Up Day. Our number of volunteers who are dedicated to help keep our streets and yards clean continues to grow and this year blew me away with the hundreds of men, women and children who came out to help. It is obvious that more and more people care enough about our Town to want to keep it looking good. I want to make sure and let every one of you know that The Cicero Town News I am truly thankful for your hard work and dedication to keeping Cicero CLEAN. I want to also thank Emo Cundari, our Town Assessor, for leading this effort every year. +++++ It seems like just last week we were battling record cold and snow. Now, we are in June and summer vacation is almost here for Cicero s young people. After school lets out, our kids will be enjoying summer break with a wide variety of programs, events, and outdoor activities. I ask that everyone be aware of the increased number of youth crossing the streets and enjoying our open green spaces and parks and be careful driving around Town. And for our youth, school may be out, but the Town wants to help you keep learning. We offer a wide range of programs and events that will give you a chance to learn something new and have fun at the same time. I hope you take advantage of these wonderful opportunities this year. Town News Walmart Supercenter Officially Opens in Cicero, Creates 400 New Jobs Continued from page 1 Walmart officials said more than 8,300 people submitted applications for the jobs during hiring events coordinated with the Town. I began my career with Walmart a little over 18 years ago as an hourly associate at the Joliet store, Perez said. I have had six different positions and I am now proud to lead this great team of people into this Cicero community. They are excited as I am to be here and provide our customers with the best shopping experience. Perez is a resident of Cicero, along with other store management. She said the features of this new Supercenter include an expanded Hispanic grocery selection, local produce and other low-cost items the store believes area residents most want. At Walmart, it is our mission to help our customers to save money so they can live better on what they want and what they need, she said. Our store is about making our community stronger. Dominick thanked the Town officials and the Town s legal team for finalizing the deal that took nearly a decade to complete. He also thanked Craig Pesek, the Town s project manager, for completing the negotiations and seeing the construction through. Before he began his remarks, Dominick announced he so was inspired by the performance of the Morton High school bands that he will donate $500 to help them with their projects. Not all jobs are filled at the new Walmart, according to Perez. She said that the supercenter will continue to hire employee, estimating at least 40 position are currently open. We will be continuing to review job applications to fill those positions, Perez promised. Interested applicants can go online to www.walmart.com/apply to fill out an application. Cicero is already home to Sam s Club, the warehouse store owned by Walmart s parent company Walmart Stores, Inc. The Cicero location recently earned the honor of the nation s top revenue producing store designation by Sam s Club. Walmart Officials said they expect the new Walmart to do the same in the near future. Over the years, we have worked hard to prove to businesses and companies throughout the country that Cicero is the best place to locate in terms of retail success and also industry and employment, Dominick said. Since 2005, more than two dozen major companies have relocated into Cicero; including Wirtz Beverage Illinois, Menards, Sonic Restaurant, Fuller s Car Wash, and Clover Hill Bakery. 4 The Cicero Town News June 14

Town News Cicero Clean-Up Week Continues Efforts to Beautify Town Hundreds of volunteers flooded the streets of Cicero to maintain Cicero Town President s goal of a New Cicero with the ninth annual Clean-Up Day on May 10. As part of the Keep Cicero CLEAN program, volunteers from churches, schools, sports teams and civic organizations canvassed the Town, picking up trash and clearing the leaves left over prior to the long winter that plagued the area. The Clean-Up day runs in conjunction with the Department of Public Work s Spring pickup of additional trash to keep the large items from littering the alleyways and creating safety hazards. CLEAN is an acronym that represents the five prongs of a program that combines elements of prevention and enforcement designed to improve the quality of life for Cicero residents: Community leadership; Law Enforcement; (resident) Assistance; and (protecting) Neighborhoods. Organized by Town Assessor Emilio Emo Cundari, Cicero s Clean-Up week saw an immediate transformation of many of the Town s streets and parks. Events like (Cicero Clean-Up Day) are what make me proud to live in Cicero, Cundari said. Students, employees, civic leaders and neighbors are all out here working to help with spring cleaning. You don t see this from someone unless they care about where they live and Cicero shows we have so many people who care. Dominick said he was impressed with the turnout, seeing the efforts of the volunteers as a testament to the hard work in making the New Cicero a reality. Our residents deserve to live in a clean and beautiful Town, Dominick said. At the conclusion of Clean-Up Day volunteers gathered at Cicero Community Park for a free lunch, compliments of President Dominick. These men, women and children worked hard to keep our Town beautiful, said Dominick. Providing lunch is the least I could do to show my appreciation for their efforts. June 14 The Cicero Town News 5

Town News Cicero Celebrates Cinco de Mayo With Mexican Consul General Cultural Committee (CMCC). We are very proud to welcome all of the residents to celebrate this important holiday honoring an important date in sustaining Mexico s independence and today helps recognize the many contributions that Mexican Americans contribute to this country, Dominick said. The celebration of Cinco de Mayo commemorates the Mexican Army s victory over the forces of Napoleon III on May 5, 1862 at the battle of Puebla. The battle ensured Mexico s independence. Cicero Mexican Cultural Committee Chairman Frank J. Aguilar told the crowd, Do you realize how important you are, the people of Cicero, that the Consulate General of Mexico came to Cicero to celebrate Cinco de Mayo? Aguilar said, noting that Cicero s celebration was the only one in which Macias attended. Macias thanked President Dominick and the CMCC for their commitment and wide-ranging services to the Mexican Community. Cinco de Mayo is an important event in our community in celebrating the history and the culture of the people of Mexico. This event symbolizes how the people of Mexico came together, united to force the French forces out of our beloved Mexico to bring forth a stronger nation. Que viva Mexico! Macias said. I love coming to Cicero. I always feel warmly welcomed when I come here. I look forward to seeing this great community in September. Along with the festival, Cicero officials and the CMCC sponsor the annual President s Cup soccer championship at Toyota Park in Bridgview. Clyde Park s soccer team won this year s championship game against Chicago s The Dragons, who were the twotime defending champion in the area-wide tournament. The Dominick, Macias, and Lupita Diaz Donato, this year s Senorita Cicero, congratulated the Clyde Park District Soccer team. Also congratulating the team were Trustee Larry Banks, Town Assessor Emilio Cumdari, Dr. Dana Grove of Morton College which was a soccer tournament sponsor. The Trophy was presented to the winning team by 1st princess Marisol Campos and 2nd princess Mary Ester Sanchez. Also attending the event were Supervisor Joe Virruso, Collector Fran Reitz, Trustees Victor Garcia, Dennis Raleigh and Clerk Maria Punzo-Arias. A special welcome was read from Trustee Lorraine Walsh. Dominick thanked members of the committee who also helped including tournament organizer Gerardo Solis and Josefina Vega, members of the President s Office of Special Events & Recreation including Patty Dominick, Cynthia Salvino and Jeff Pesek, and Maru Ayala of Mas Enterprises for their hard work in organizing a successful weekend. I am very proud of our successful festival, Ayala said. With the help of President Dominick, the officials of the Town of Cicero, our sponsors, organizers, the volunteers, the Office of Special Events, and the support from the Cicero Police Department, we have had a great Cinco de Mayo celebration here in Cicero. 8 The Cicero Town News June 14

Town News Cicero Honors Polish Community During Constitution Day Ceremony Town residents and officials gathered together at the Community Center to celebrate Polish Constitution Day on May 8. Joining the Town in honoring Cicero s Polish community was Polish Vice-Consul Konrad Zieliński who spoke about the Eastern European nation and its close relationship with the United States. Zieliński thanked the Town for recognizing the impact the Polish community has had in the United States, especially in Cicero and the rest of the Chicagoland area. He also praised the hard work and loyalty the Polish have exhibited throughout history. In Illinois, Polish is the most common language spoken at home after English and Spanish, according to the American Community Survey. One of Cicero s proud Polish residents, Joseph Widlarz, helped highlight the Polish celebration by playing traditional songs from his native land. When World War II broke out, Widlarz joined and served in the Polish army, becoming a Prisoner of War and transferred to Dachau, one of Germany s first concentration camps. Widlarz was freed by the American army in 1945 and emigrated to the United States four years later. The 94-year-old veteran has been living in Cicero since 1983. Lincoln School Caps Successful Reading Year With Bike Giveaway Town President Larry Dominick s annual reading program to be a great success in fulfilling his dream of making life better for at least one Cicero child each day he s in office. On May 22, to close out another year of helping improve child literacy abilities in the Town, Dominick add to the celebration by giving a new bike away to eight lucky children who successfully participated in the program at Lincoln Elementary. Reading well is such an important tool in life, Dominick said. My goal is to help one kid everyday have a better life and this program is just one of those ways we as a Town can reach that goal. Sue Kleinmeyer, principal of Lincoln, thanked the children for their hard work before Dominick drew the names of the winners of the bikes. At the close of the event, Dominick congratulated the students for their great work in reading and pushed them to continue to read throughout the summer. By reading, you stay ahead of your class, Dominick said. So, make sure and pick up a good book or two this summer. 10 The Cicero Town News June 14

Town News Morton East and CISCO Partner to Host Trade Fair for Students Approximately 300 students from J. Sterling Morton High School District 201 attended The Hands on Trade Show at Morton East High School. The trade show was hosted by the Morton East High School Special Education Department in partnership with CISCO, the Construction Industry Service Corporation. The event provided students with an opportunity to explore careers with representatives from a wide variety of fields. Our goal is to provide students with a brighter future, said Mr. Rodolfo Hernandez, principal of Morton East High School. This fair is just part of our Career Readiness program. At Morton we encourage our students to experience different career options and we seek to provide students with the opportunity to meet people in those fields who can provide support and guide them in the process. The majority of the students who participated are enrolled in District 201 s work program, which stresses employability and transitioning to post-high school goals. Representatives from Youth Crossroads, Corazon Community Services, Morton College, Chicago Journeymen Plumbers Local Union 130 UA, the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 134, the Chicago Area Painting & Decorating Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee, and Chicago Area Drywall Finishing Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee were on hand and offered presentations and demonstrations to the students. Morton East s Culinary Club prepared lunch for those who attended. Divided into groups of six, the culinary students used four separate kitchens to make regular and vegetarian lasagna, chicken, and garlic bread for the attendees. Morton Students Shown Dangers of Drinking and Driving Through Operation: PROM Night With the American tradition of prom looming ahead, studnets from Morton High School District 201 were given a sobering demonstration of the dangers of drinking and driving through Operation: PROM Night on May 2. Operation: PROM Night, which stands for Please Return on Monday, is a free program presented to more than a dozen schools in the Western Suburbs that provides a dramatic representation of what can happen when someone gets behind the wheel after drinking. The startling car crash reenactment silenced the hundreds of Morton students who stood outside during the colder-thannormal weather. District 201 worked with local officials, fireman, policeman, and more to bring this powerful message to young people. Mock crashes show firsthand the serious consequences that can and do happen when young people choose to drive under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. This program portrays students on their way home from a party. One of the drivers drinks and makes a deadly decision, resulting in a family of four incurring massive injuries and the driver s date failing to survive the accident. The Town of Cicero, Morton 201, and the directors of Operation: PROM Night want to make sure that everyone fulfills the program s goal, which has seen success in recent years with zero incidences of Morton students involved in post-prom accidents involving drinking and driving. Town News Sons Treat Their Mothers to a Special Night Out At Mother/Son Dance Mothers were given a special night with their sons on May 2 as the Town of Cicero hosted the 6th Annual Mother/ Son Dance at the Cicero Community Center. Mothers were given a corsage and a photo with their special young men while they enjoyed music, dinner, dancing and great fun, all thanks to the Town President Larry Dominick and the Cicero Youth Commission. During the evening, a special select number of mothers and sons entertained the crowd with their rendition of YMCA made famous by the 70s rock group The Village People. President Dominick extended a special thanks to Wayne and Rose Porod and the Cicero Youth Commission for all of the hard work they put in to make this edition of the Mother/Son Dance a fantastic success. 12 The Cicero Town News June 14

Community Announcements & Services Announcements From The Town Offices A Message from the Building Department... Soft Ground Parking Parking on Soft Ground is illegal in the Town of Cicero. Parking is only allowed on paved surfaces. Soft Ground Parking is not only unsightly, but also increases the risks of oils and gas seeping into the soil, which can lead to health issues for you and/or your neighbors. Please keep Cicero Clean, and avoid tickets by keeping your property free of soft ground parking. Soft Ground parking includes: grass, dirt, gravel, paving stones, and other permeable surfaces. Fines up to $750 are issued for violations. High Grass and Weeds When vegetation is allowed to remain tall, there are possible negative consequences. Tall weeds detract from the appearance of the neighborhood. Undesirable wildlife like rats and mice use the unmowed lawn for hiding places and habitat, and these animals may carry disease. Lastly, unmowed grass tells passers by that no one cares about the property, which may invite criminal activity. Please keep Cicero Clean and avoid tickets by maintaining your lawn. Community Announcements & Services Announcements From The Town Offices From The Cicero Police Department With summer approaching, it is time for outdoor festivals, family gatherings and sporting events. But the summer also brings a larger number of Loud Unreasonable Noice/Music complaints to the Cicero Police Department. The Department receives hundreds of these complaints annually and we are asking for your help in curbing the problem. Cicero Police ask Cicero residents to please be considerate of their neighbors when planning outdoor celebrations. Cranking up the sound system and having live bands perform in your backyard event is not only inconsiderate to your neighbors but a violation of Town Ordinances - Unreasonable Noises Prohibited Sec. 38-26 & 27. If someone is having a loud party in your neighborhood, you may call the Police Department for assistance. When deciding to call the police, however, you must also decide whether the noice is at a level that your peace is being disturbed. If it is, you need to decide whether you are willing to press formal charges in order to curb the loud noise or stop it altogether. The law defines which sounds are and are not acceptable at any given time so residents can live comfortably in our Town. Many of the complaints received are at nighttime hours when most people are asleep. The Cicero Police Department may intially issue a warning, but chronic calls to the Police about the noise problems can and will result in the issuance of citations and assessments of up to $250. Please consider your neighbors and comply with this Town Ordinace. When planning your summer celebrations, remember those around your home. Computer Classes For Seniors, Adults and Children The Cicero Community Center is offering bi-lingual computer classes for Seniors, Adults, and children (4 th thru 8 th Grade). Basic and intermediate classes will be offered in 6 week sessions meeting once a week. Upon completion student will be able to demonstrate knowledge of basic computer applications. Cicero 50+ Adult/Senior Exercise Class (Cicero Residents Only) A low impact exercise class for Adults 50+ and seniors to improve their flexibility, balance and strength.
