1 WHISPERS WHISPERS is the official newsletter of Adventist Aged Care, Wahroonga January-February 2015 Edition Compiled by Irene Corbett RAO Coordinator Hello and welcome to the January-February edition of Whispers: The Newsletter designed to keep the residents and their loved ones updated with current events and important information about Elizabeth Lodge & Esther Somerville.
2 To Residents An assessment team from the Australian Aged Care Quality Agency (Quality Agency) will visit us to conduct a re-accreditation audit on 07 April 2015 to 09 April 2015 commencing at 9:00 AM. The team will assess the quality of care we provide to you and other care recipients. If you wish, you or someone who represents you may meet with a member of the team about the care you receive. The team will also talk to management, staff and visitors. They will examine our records and observe the physical surroundings and what happens during a normal day. All of this, along with any information you give is considered by the team in assessing our quality of care and services. If you wish to talk to an assessor, let a member of staff know so an appointment can be made, or tell one of the assessors on the day. Assessors must keep confidential any conversation they have with you. The Quality Agency will not be able to provide personal feedback to you but your comments will be taken into account in the way the re-accreditation audit is carried out and in the preparation of the report. Julie Chapple Executive Director of Care Adventist Aged Care WAHROONGA AND KINGS LANGLEY Phone:

5 Residents Meeting All residents and Families/Carers are invited to come along to the residents meeting held on the second floor in the Chapel NEXT RESIDENTS MEETING Wednesday 29 th January Wednesday 30th th April PET THERAPY If you are a dog lover come down to the main foyer or activities room starts in January 2015 then ever second Friday to spend some time with Tim and his golden Labrador Jemma. Benefits of therapy Pets may motivate and encourage the elderly to stay healthy and exercise and give the elderly a feeling of being needed. Motor skills can be improved or learned with the assistance of an animal trained for pet therapy and the creative inclusion of an animal in the life or therapy of a person with an illness or disability can make a major difference in their comfort, progress and recovery. What to do in an emergency: At times it may be difficult for residents to decide what to do in an emergency. If there is an emergency in your bedroom, e.g. flooding or fire, please notify staff immediately and tell them what your immediate needs are, including moving electrical items. If the fire alarm sounds, please stay where you are and wait for the staff instructions. The staff will come and find you if they need you to move to a different area. Please be assured that the staff will guide you and that the fire engines will arrive within just a few minutes. If you have any further questions, please feel free to ask a staff member. The importance of not disturbing staff when giving out medications You may have seen some staff wearing a red apron that says "Please do not disturb" or pushing a medication trolley. The staff member wearing this apron or pushing a medication trolley has the very important task of giving out medication and must NEVER be disturbed. If you need attention from care staff please asks another staff member at this time. Please help ensure no errors are caused by distracting this staff member.
6 Families and residents Flowers: If any resident receives flowers please ensure these are not placed near fabrics. Some our room dividers and curtains are getting pollen stains on them. Clothing and fabric-covered chairs would also be at risk, as would doilies etc. Thanks for considering this. Clothing labels: Please remember that residents who have their clothing laundered on site should have all garments labelled with either iron-on or sewn-on labels. If new clothing is brought in, please give it to the supervisor for labelling before it is worn. All clothing that is not adequately labelled will have the residents label ironed on, and the cost (at 50c per label) will be charged to the resident s account. Labels are printed in sets of 30 or more. We ask that residents and/or families check wardrobes regularly for unlabeled or incorrectly labelled clothing. If clothing is incorrectly labelled, a replacement label will be printed and stored. There will be no cost to the resident for that label. Thanks for understanding. Old or stained clothing: Our laundry operators have noticed that some pieces of clothing have become stained or have signs of wearing out. These will be returned to the resident/families and we ask that the items be considered for bleaching, repairing or replacing. Please let the staff know what your decision was for each item. Residents Fridge Reminder to Families and visitors please check Residents fridge for spoiled and out of date food. Communal NEWSPAPER Attention Residents: Please remember the Newspapers located in the Lounge room are paid for by the facility and are for all residents use. Please do not remove these papers from the lounge areas. Thank you for your cooperation. Residents Washing Machines and Dryers RESIDENTS AND FAMILIES CLEANING WASHING MACHINES AND DRYER FILTERS IS THE RESPONSIBLITY OF EACH PERSON WHO USES THESE FACILITIES NOT FOR THE NEXT PERSON WHO USES THE MACHINES SO PLEASE CLEAN AFTER EACH USE.
