An Invitation to Apply: San Francisco State University School of Nursing College Of Health And Human Services Assistant, Associate or Full Professor in Nursing / Tenure Track Area of Specialization: Leadership/Management, Adult Health, Medical- Surgical Nursing, Health Assessment and Foundations and/or Advanced Practice Nursing (February 16, 2009 Revision # 9.08) THE SEARCH San Francisco State University (SFSU) School of Nursing, within the College of Health and Human Services, invites applications and nominations for an Assistant Professor to Full Professor, Leadership/Management, Adult Health, Medical-Surgical Nursing, Health Assessment and Foundations and/or Advanced Practice Nursing position. The School seeks qualified applicants interested in becoming part of a large urban university, including a satellite campus at Cañada College in Redwood City, California. This is a full-time, 9-month appointment. Rank, tenure and salary are to be negotiated, commensurate with experience and qualifications. Review of materials will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled. POSITION DESCRIPTION This faculty member would teach at the undergraduate and graduate levels in both the classroom and practice sites in his/her specialty area and in general nursing courses. Teaching expertise is desired in any or a combination of the following content areas: leadership/management, adult health, medical-surgical nursing, health assessment and foundations and/or advanced practice nursing. Expertise in nursing education management and leadership is also helpful. -1-

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES This faculty member will participate in the development, implementation and evaluation of the undergraduate and graduate nursing programs. Responsible for classroom and clinical teaching of undergraduate and graduate students at all levels of the curriculum with particular emphasis in the specialty area. Effective teacher who encourages learning and professional development of students. Engages in scholarly work and service related to his/her specialty and interests. REQUIRED AND PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS Required: Earned research doctorate in Nursing or related field by prior to August 1 st prior to employment, Masters Degree in Nursing. Licensed to practice (or eligible for licensure) as an RN in California. For nurse practitioner candidates: California NP Certification, National Board Certification and evidence of recent NP practice. Evidence of excellence in teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Preferred: Prior teaching experience. Demonstrated ability in nursing leadership and management, curriculum planning and evaluation. Demonstrated record of scholarly activities: research, publications and/or directing grants/projects. Record of practice within the candidate s particular field of nursing practice. Experience and expertise in additional nursing areas is desired. Preference will be given to a candidate with demonstrated interest and experience in teaching, research and practice within a multi-ethnic and multicultural setting. Philosophy Some of the values and assumptions that underlie the SFSU School of Nursing philosophy are that: Humans manifest an essential unity of mind/body/spirit. Human experience is contextually and culturally defined. Health and illness are human experiences. Nursing involves practices that are restorative, supportive, and promotive in nature (ANA, 1995). Based on these values, the graduate of our program is prepared to practice in a variety of settings across the health care continuum and to care for patients, families, and communities across the lifespan. The nursing graduate will utilize knowledge from related disciplines, as well as liberal and professional education to demonstrate: Knowledge and skill in nursing. Intellectual curiosity and critical thinking. Cultural competence. Evidence-based practice standards. Ethical nursing care. Leadership and lifelong learning. Academic Programs Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program The Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program prepares students for entry-level positions in professional nursing practice. The program provides the basics for leadership and graduate education in nursing. Graduates are prepared for staff nurse positions in maternity, pediatrics, medical-surgical nursing, gerontology, psychiatric/ mental health, community health and home care nursing. The Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program allows students currently enrolled within the San Francisco State University and students with previous college/university education to apply for the nursing major. In addition to meeting University admissions requirements, students who wish to change their major or transfer into San Francisco State University, School of Nursing, must meet certain prerequisites in order to enter nursing clinical courses. Advanced Placement Option for RNs The Advanced Placement Option is a plan of study designed for Associate Degree and Diploma RNs interested in obtaining a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. The plan provides credit for previous course work and flexible scheduling to time. If a student meets University general education and other degree requirements, it is possible to complete the course of study in one to one and a half years through full time study. -4-

Sequoia Hospital/SFSU Baccalaureate Nursing Program at Cañada College This program was founded in 2004 as a four-way partnership among the Sequoia Health Care District, Sequoia Hospital, Cañada College, and San Francisco State University. The goal is to increase nursing enrollment to help combat the well-known nursing shortage, specifically the shortage affecting the San Francisco Bay Area and the southern portion of San Mateo County. The program provides capacity for an additional forty students each year for students interested in and qualified for the Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree. The Sequoia Health Care District provides funding for this program on behalf of taxpayers in surrounding counties. Sequoia Hospital provides most of the clinical placements for students in the program, as well as clinical instruction. In addition, the hospital supports students in the program with a forgivable loan program and a competitive scholarship. Cañada College supplies classroom space and facilities, as well as staff support and infrastructure. San Francisco State University provides the curriculum and faculty for the program. Students who successfully complete the program earn their Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from SFSU and are eligible to take the state licensing examination to become a Registered Nurse. Master of Science in Nursing Program The Master of Science in Nursing Program prepares nurses for advanced practice nursing roles in acute care, ambulatory care, community, and home health settings. The core program includes courses in nursing theory, health care policy, and ethics for advanced practice nurses, and role development. Additionally, the core program requires students to complete two clinical courses and a culminating experience (thesis or field study). Units taken in addition to the core program are selected with graduate nursing faculty advisement. The program offers a pathway for non-nurse applicants with baccalaureate degrees in other fields, as well as registered nurses with baccalaureate degrees in other fields, to enter graduate studies. Family Nurse Practitioner Concentration The Master of Science in Nursing with a concentration as a Family Nurse Practitioner is a program for Registered Nurses who have a minimum of a baccalaureate degree in nursing. One year of recent clinical experience is recommended. Graduates of this program will be eligible to practice in primary care settings as Nurse Practitioners and will be eligible to apply for State of California and national certification as Nurse Practitioners. -5-

LVN Option Non-Degree Program The option is made available for LVNs to complete a non-degree-granting program that provides the LVN with the eligibility to take the California state licensure examination for Registered Nurses. ACCREDITATION The BSN program is accredited by the California Board of Registered Nursing and accredited by the American Association of Colleges in Nursing (AACN). The Master of Science in Nursing Program also meets guidelines for graduate nursing education issued by the American Association of College of Nursing (AACN) as well as the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).
