3 Graduate School Nursing An advanced degree in nursing will provide you with additional professional options. At this advanced level, more and more nurses are involved in research, consulting and private practice. The nursing profession offers many career pathways which require advanced nursing degrees. Nurse Practitioners: Provide primary and specialty care. Assess, diagnose, plan and institute management of healthcare services for individuals and families in need of care. Today, more and more nurses with master s and doctoral degrees are involved in research and leadership in clinical practice. New opportunities are emerging in case management, home health nursing and primary care. Our graduate programs in nursing are designed to respond to a student s individual learning needs with a focus on building and expanding your practice as a professional nurse. D YOUVILLE ADVANTAGES Clinical placements are convenient to your home or workplace. Attend on a full-time or part-time basis. Take classes one day a week. Community health nursing courses are offered as a hybrid of online and in-class discussions Overnight dormitory housing (space permitting) is available at a nominal fee. Clinical Nurse Specialists: Provide direct patient care and consultation and participate in nursing research in one of many nursing specialties. Nursing Management: Positions include: assistant director, director, chief nursing officer. Management from the business side of healthcare includes opportunities in areas such as insurance companies, pharmaceutical manufacturers, managed care organizations; home based and chronic care businesses. Nurse Educators May work in clinical settings, nonprofit agencies, government and higher education campuses. As a student in D Youville College s master of science FNP program, you will: Learn to assess, diagnose and manage common acute and chronic illnesses. Become skilled in promoting healthy habits and educating patients about disease prevention. Gain practical experience in women s health, pediatrics and adult settings. Have the opportunity to work closely with faculty mentors and those from the nursing community. Take classes on Thursdays and/or Fridays. Complete the degree program after 40 credit hours. Be prepared to take the examination for board certification.

D Youville s new doctor of nursing practice (D.N.P.) degree program is designed for nurses with a master s degree in an advanced practice specialty who seek to enhance their knowledge and professional future in an ever-evolving, integrative health care system. Upon graduation you ll be prepared to: Serve in a leadership role as a family nurse practitioner. Implement new practice approaches to health care delivery. D YOUVILLE DISTINCTIONS Learn in a program that integrates communications, business, financial and cultural sensitivity principles. 7 ADDITIONAL ADMISSIONS REQUIREMENTS FOR D.N.P. 1. Completion of a baccalaureate degree in nursing from a CCNE or ACEN accredited program at a college or university (or CNO in Ontario). Canadian students must submit a course-by-course evaluation (or equivalent) of all Canadian college and/or university transcripts through the World Education Services (WES). 2. Completion of a master s degree with specialty preparation as an advanced practice nurse (nursing practitioner, clinical nurse specialist, nurse anesthetist or nurse midwife) from a CCNE or ACEN accredited program at a college or university (or CNO in Ontario). 12. Favorable review with a panel of D Youville College nursing faculty members. 13.Three letters of reference; the faculty prefer that one come from a collegelevel professor if possible, and at least one from an employer or colleague with an advanced or terminal degree, focusing on the applicant s potential for success in the doctoral program. 14.A written personal statement outlining how the applicant expects the degree to assist in achieving specific career goals. 3. Minimum graduate grade point average of 3.25 (based on a 4.0 system). 4. Official transcripts from each college of university attended; this must include all undergraduate and graduate work. 5. A current license to practice professional nursing in New York State or Ontario. 6. A current certification in CPR. 7. Current national certification (or exam eligibility) as an advanced practice nursing in a specialty area (where applicable). 8. Documentation of the number of clinical hours completed in prior master s degree program. 9. At least two years of relevant professional experience. 10.Current resume or curriculum vitae. 11. Evidence of active membership in at least one professional organization.
8 Advanced Certificate Family Nurse Practitioner Advanced Certificate Nursing and Health-Related Professions Education curriculum summary ADDITIONAL ADMISSIONS REQUIREMENTS FOR NURSING AND HEALTH RELATED PROFESSIONS CERTIFICATE All advanced certificate courses are registered with the New York State Education Department and are offered in both spring and fall semesters. Graduate tuition and fees apply. Please use the graduate online application to apply. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis. To be admitted: 1. You must have a bachelor s degree in a health care field. 2. Prior academic achievement will also be considered by the School of Nursing. FAMILY NURSE PRACTITIONER This post-master s certificate is designed for students who have already earned a master s degree in nursing, this 30-credit-hour program can be completed in 12 to 24 months. Graduates will be eligible to take the Family NP Certification Exam. Students accomplish 700 hours of clinical preceptorships and are well prepared to provide primary care to patients of all ages. Case management, preventive services, prescription writing, and family/client education are an integral part of the nurse practitioner practice. Graduates work independently and with other members of the health care team to provide comprehensive patient care. Financial Aid & Scholarships At D Youville College, we understand that financing a graduate education can be difficult. That s why we have various forms of financial aid available for all students, such as scholarships, grants and loans. New entering graduate students are automatically reviewed for award eligibility, though a minimum G.P.A. of 3.25 or higher is required. Continuing graduate students can apply for a merit scholarship directly with the academic department. GRADUATE, DOCTORAL AND CERTIFICATE PROGRAMS IN NURSING APPLICATION PROCESS Prospective applications should forward the following materials to the graduate admissions office: 1. A completed graduate online application for admission. 2. Official undergraduate and graduate transcripts from all colleges and universities previously attended. 3. Decision: three weeks after all application materials are received. CANADIAN STUDENT DISCOUNT We currently award a 10% net tuition discount to Canadian students. This discount applies to tuition only. Ontario residents may also be eligible to apply for OSAP funding. Our financial aid office will complete the required paperwork, however Ontario does not confirm award eligibility prior to enrollment.
