WELCOME! Dear Istanbul 2010 Congress Participants, I welcome you on behalf of all those who have contributed to the preparation of this Congress. After Taormina, where we finalised the process of governance reform and where we identified the need for enlarging Europa Nostra s social and geographic scope and opening up to the young generation, Istanbul will be the first occasion where we will both review the past year and take a look at the future. Three years ago when the candidacy of Istanbul for the 2010 Congress was first put forward, I made it clear that we took this as a challenge to further enrich the intellectual content of the Congress. Since November 2009, we have launched a Congress website and a bi-weekly Bulletin to disseminate information regarding the Istanbul Congress. In addition to the traditional programme of the Europa Nostra meetings, two sessions will be devoted to the presentation of the twentynine award winning projects. At preparatory meetings which took place in April and May, heritage NGO representatives from Western European countries (Germany, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom) had the opportunity to exchange their experiences with their colleagues from Turkey. Besides the Istanbul special issue of the Europa Nostra Review (edited by Wolter Braamhorst), the proceedings of the Forum will be published in book form, in Turkish and English. Thanks to the curatorship of Yonca Erkan, we were able to offer to the larger public The Power of Example exhibition in one of the two main railway stations of the city. The venues of the different activities have been chosen from among different palaces, museums and other cultural landmarks, so that you will have a chance to visit, see and discuss them in the course of the Congress. We are happy that we were able to accomplish all this in spite of the havoc wreaked by the economic crisis. In this, the main sponsorship of the Istanbul 2010 Agency was of crucial importance. Other Congress supporters, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the National Palaces Administration of the Turkish National Assembly, the Kadir Has University, the Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University, and the Vehbi Koç Foundation, as well as the Istanbul Chamber of Commerce as the sponsor of the Welcome Reception, have made invaluable contributions. 6

The Europa Nostra International Secretariat, under the direction of Sneska Quaedvlieg-Mihailovic, as well as Board member Tom Henkemans, have given invaluable support to the Istanbul office. I am grateful for the support of Işık Aydemir, member of the Scientific Council of Europa Nostra, as well as each and every member of the Local Organising Committee, and the individual members (organisations and inviduals) of Europa Nostra in Turkey, who have been at work since May 2009 to make this Congress a success. The best result of this process was that it gave rise to a substantial increase in Europa Nostra membership in Turkey. I would like to express my gratitude to Myra Design and Publication and VIP Turizm, for their expert assistance and support. Last but not least, I would like to thank the team that actually carried out the day to day hard work in the Istanbul office, Ernur Ercan, Kerem Çiftçioğlu, Yeşim Tonga and Barış Altan, for their unsparing dedication and support. Let us hope that you will enjoy the Istanbul Congress which will carry the resolutions of Taormina one step further, and also lead to the successful launch of Europe Nostra-Turkey. Orhan Silier Coordinator of the Istanbul 2010 Congress, and EN Board Member ORGANISING COMMITTEE : Füsun Alioğlu (Kadir Has University), Asu Aksoy (Istanbul Bilgi University), Mehmet Alper (Kadir Has University), Barış Altan (Deputy Coordinator- after April 2010), Tomur Atagök (Yıldız Technical University), Işık Aydemir (Europa Nostra Scientific Council), Kerem Çiftçioğlu (Deputy Coordinatorafter January 2010), Ernur Ercan (Ass.
