3 About the Event The EGI Community Forum 2014 is the most recent in the series of events that bring together researchers, engineers and IT people from around the world to discuss the use of distributed computing and storage infrastructures grids and clouds. We expect a strong attendance from delegates across the globe. The Community Forum will take place at University of Helsinki s main building in the heart of Helsinki, Finland, between May, The event will be hosted by EGI.eu, a dedicated organisation coordinating the European Grid Infrastructure, University of Helsinki, and CSC IT Center for Science Ltd. The event will be co-located with the several satellite meetings. A series of plenary keynote speakers will set the theme each day and increase the awareness of the community as a whole to activity taking place in e-infrastructures around the world. Over 300 scientists, engineers, middleware and application developers and general technical support staff, as well as researchers using e-infrastructures from all around the world, alongside representatives of the European Commission and other policy bodies, are expected to be in Helsinki. Information on the forum and its programme, consisting each day of plenary keynotes, technical sessions and workshops organised into tracks, will be added to the event s frequently updated website:

4 e-infrastructure The European Grid Infrastructure (EGI) is a publicly funded e-infrastructure put together to give scientists access to more than 370,000 logical CPUs, 170 PB of disk capacity to drive research and innovation in Europe. Resources are provided by about 350 resource centres who are distributed across 56 countries in Europe, the Asia-Pacific region, Canada and Latin America. The EGI Federated Cloud is a seamless grid of academic private clouds and virtualised resources, built around open standards and focusing on the requirements of the scientific community. The result is a new type of research e-infrastructure, based on the mature federated operations services that make EGI a reliable resource for science. CSC is also investing heavily into cloud services currently. Selected examples of grid computing applications to science can be found on The FGI is the Finnish Grid Infrastructure, a national distributed computing environment and the NGI for Finland. It is distributed between nine Finnish universities, institutes and CSC. The available resources are used both locally by CSC/university users and through the grid middleware. Hosting organizations The University of Helsinki is a multidisciplinary research university that is regularly ranked among the top-100 Universities in the world. The University research in natural and medical sciences utilizes extensively high-performance computing. The national FGI purchases have been lead by the Chairman of the EGI Forum Prof. Kai Nordlund, and the other chairmen Prof. Sasu Tarkoma and Dr. Tomas Linden are also involved in other Grid and Cloud computing purchases and project development. CSC IT Center for Science Ltd., is a state-owned non-profit company providing services to the Ministry of Education, Science and Culture. CSC provides IT support and resources for academia, research institutes and companies: modelling, computing and information services. CSC provides Finland s widest selection of scientific software and databases and Finland's most powerful supercomputing environment that researchers can use via the Funet network. The European Grid Infrastructure (EGI) delivers integrated computing services to European researchers, driving innovation and enabling new solutions to answer the big questions of tomorrow.

5 Venue The conference will be held in the historic University of Helsinki main building, Helsinki, Finland. The location is right in downtown Helsinki, near to the main harbour and historic main square. There are numerous hotels, restaurants and hostels within walking distance. The downtown can be easily reached from the airport by public transport or taxi and 8 minutes walk from the central railway station. The address of the main building is Fabianinkatu 33. Helsinki is a very pleasant place in the spring, with daytime temperatures typically between 15 and 20 degrees C. Helsinki is a very well connected city. The Helsinki airport has currently daily direct flights from 10 cities in Asia, 3 in North America (New York, Chicago, Toronto) and more than 40 major cities in Europe. There are also daily ferries from Stockholm, Sweden (10 hours), Tallinn, Estonia (2 hours) and St. Petersburg, Russia (10 hours) and a modern fast (3.5 hours) train from St. Petersburg. These cities are also interesting alternatives for a pre- or post-conference tour.

6 Exhibition Package The exhibition will be located on the second floor of University Main Building, in the same area as coffees, close to the session halls. The price includes a booth with a size of 2,2x1,5 m 2 : 1 table, 2 chairs, 2 poster walls (one wall is 107cm wide), and an electrical connection. All rental of equipment such as additional furniture, technical or electrical installations, must be ordered by 1 st of March 2014 and will be charged separately. Please remember to look after your booth as the university area is a public place.
