Superintendent, The Board of Public Education for the City of Savannah and the County of Chatham, Georgia (1988-1990) Served as chief executive office for the Board of Public Education Deputy Superintendent, The Board of Public Education for the City of Savannah and the County of Chatham (1985-1988) Worked under the direction of the district superintendent and oversaw the day-to-day operations of the school district serving 34,000 students in grades K-12 and an additional 4000 students in a post-secondary vocational-technical school. Was involved in the development and implementation of school district policies, budget, and instructional and management programs. Deputy to the Secretary of Education, Commonwealth of Virginia (1982-1985) Served as an advisor to the secretary of education and the Governor on matters of education policy. Responsibilities included oversight of public (K-12) and higher education in Virginia, and several state-supported cultural institutions. Involved in the development of state education policies and guidelines, and the development of program budgets for all state education agencies and institutions of higher education. Worked closely with the state legislature, executive branch agencies, and education constituent groups.
