Leadership MEMBER OF EXECUTIVE BOARD OF LOCAL AFFILIATE OF NEA-ALASKA President Building Representative Treasurer Scope of experience, in a vigorous collective bargaining environment: Advised and participated in bargaining team preparations for both collaborative and collective bargaining contract negotiations. Worked with superintendent on a variety of employee relation issues like health care costs, sick leave bank, and employee morale. Led, organized, planned, and implemented all aspects of DEA Sock Hop Fundraiser for the scholarship fund. Designed logo. Wrote and published newsletter for local teachers. Represented employees in middle/high school building and worked to resolve employment disputes. Managed funds of local affiliate, including scholarship fund. Dillingham Education Association, Dillingham, Alaska PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT IN-SERVICES Using Moodle in the Classroom Moodle is an open source virtual learning environment. I assisted technology

3 Leadership support staff with presenting options provided by Moodle to teachers in the district. I pioneered its use in my history courses so that it could be used as an example for other staff. I focused on the use of activity modules for collaborative learning and ways to use Moodle to assess learning. I was also available to assist teachers in solving technology or lesson planning problems as the need arose. Moodle was also a part of our school s consideration of options for delivering future alternative or distance education courses. Writing Across the Curriculum As a member of the Alaska Writing Consortium and as part of the National Writing Project I taught teachers in all grade levels how to incorporate more writing across the curriculum. This included an element of technology integration in using programs like Segue. I was also available to work with teachers individually for planning, implementing, and evaluating their lessons throughout the year. Classroom Technology Integration PowerPoint Presentations, imovie, Comic Life, Podcasts, Video Conferencing Scope of experience: On several occasions I worked with the district s technology staff to plan and implement professional development time focusing on the integration of technology into the classroom. Our focus was to show teachers how technology can be used to enhance and improve teaching and learning rather than for technology to be the focus of lessons. By doing this teachers were able to meet state standards in technology and in other areas of the curriculum through single lesson designs. Our district also participated in a one-to-one grant with Apple computers that provided laptops to all students in middle school and high school. Student-Led Conferences The school district shifted from traditional parent-teacher conferences to student-led conferences, requiring initial professional development from outside sources. Scope of experience: As a leading member of the committee for student-led conferences, and at the request of the principal, I organized and implemented subsequent professional development for new teachers and short session in-services throughout the year for all teachers to maintain the program. Dillingham Middle/ High School, Dillingham, Alaska SUPERVISION/ MENTORING Interim Dean of Students From building principal placed a substitute in my classroom for me to fill in as Dean of Students every time the Dean was out of the office for the day. I dealt with all normal job responsibilities of the position including student discipline, writing suspension letters, assisting teachers, and calming irate parents. New Teacher Mentoring

4 Leadership As an executive member of the local professional organization and a senior member of the staff I was regularly called upon to support new teachers in a variety of ways, including lesson planning and morale. Writing Across the Curriculum (Please see descriptive paragraph under Professional Development Inservice section.) Student-Led Conferences Met with teachers individually to help them in planning for conferences, particularly in using state standards as guidelines for organization. (For more information refer to Professional Development section.) COMMITTEE WORK Principal s Advisory Team Members of the principal s advisory team made decisions about all aspects of the school, including scheduling, building use requests, extracurricular events, and duty schedules. Teacher Evaluations By invitation, was the only teacher representative on the committee to develop a new teacher evaluation tool for the school district. Student-Led Conferences Led committee for middle/high school building that addressed planning and implementation of conferences. Worked with all staff throughout the year to maintain program. (For more information please see committee work section and professional development section above.) English & Social Studies Curriculum Spearheaded curriculum development for social studies and language arts for 6-12 grades by leading meetings of both committees, working to integrate learning in the two, and focusing on aligning the curriculum to state standards. Teacher In-service Committee made suggestions for professional development needs to administration. School Schedule Small group of teachers selected by building principal to develop and resolve conflicts related to the schedule for the middle/high school building. This involved scheduling staff shared with the elementary and alternative schools. Attendance Committee of teachers and parents addressing student attendance problems in the district.

5 Leadership Saturday School By invitation, a short-lived committee formed by building principal to explore the option of a Saturday School program. Love and Logic After extensive professional development in this classroom-management and school-wide approach to relationships with students the teachers formed this committee to support each other in continuing the use of the program and to train new staff in the techniques. Preservice 2000 Grant Member of a team of student teachers who created and tested new ways to integrate technology into classroom teaching methods with a focus on improving writing skills. The team created a database of lesson plan ideas and were filmed teaching lessons that integrated technology into the classroom. This grant was the precursor for the A.R.C.T.I.C. grant, designed to train teachers across the state in integrating technology into classroom teaching. The Preservice 2000 grant provided the A.R.C.T.I.C. grant with video footage, lesson plans, and other examples for training teachers.
