Distinctive Features of the Programme and the Student Experience The key features of the MSc International Shipping, MSc International Logistics and Supply Chain Management and MSc International Procurement and Supply Chain Management are: Subject relevance: The provision of three distinct specialist Masters awards in International Logistics and Supply Chain Management, International Procurement and Supply Chain Management and International Shipping is designed to appeal to professionals seeking to gain specialist skills required to enter into senior management positions in these related industries. These programmes also offer an opportunity to enhance the professional competence of individuals who are already experienced and who wish to build on that experience through a structured programme of study. Dual Award Titles: Two of our programmes MSc International Logistics and Supply Chain Management and MSc International Procurement and Supply Chain Management offer the students opportunity to pursue dual award titles in that the students have the option to study either international logistics and supply chain management or international procurement and supply chain management. This broadens the employment opportunity available to the students. Joint Masters Programmes: The programmes in International Logistics and Supply Chain Management and International Procurement and Supply Chain Management offer the opportunity to undertake a joint course with Fontys University of Applied Sciences, School of Business Engineering and Logistics (FHBL), at Venlo, the Netherlands. International Appeal: The postgraduate programmes are very international in nature in that students from over 20 countries are recruited in any one academic year. These programmes enhance the academic experiences and international contacts open to the students. Expert Staff: The programmes will be delivered by a team of international staff with strong expertise in their respective areas. The programmes offer students the opportunity to draw on a unique blend of academic excellence and industry liaison experience. Research-Informed Teaching: The International Shipping and Logistics (ISL) group undertakes substantial but focused research in the areas of international shipping, international logistics, 3

4 international procurement and international supply chain management. All our programmes are supported by research-informed teaching methods. Specialist funding has been made available in recent years to offer students an opportunity to participate in field visits to the City of London and trade exhibitions, extensive lecture programmes by visiting speakers and student workshops. Flexible Study: The programmes are run on a Period based system to best meet the needs of the industries which they serve. Each Period is progressive, assuming that students have participated in prior periods of study, and the concept remains valid for delivery to non-full time students studying in more flexible modes including block, day release or credit accumulation modes. Pathway Guidance: The programmes offer pastoral support for students on the pathway programmes. This ensures that a specialist lecturer is available to guide students in the knowledge, technical issues and skills expected of graduates in each sector, capable of offering appropriate advice on for example module choices, project development and careers issues. Field Visits: The programmes offer the opportunity the students to undertake regular visits to businesses, industrial conferences and exhibitions of interests to students. These visits bolster the students understanding of academic concepts and their applications. Visiting Speakers: Our postgraduate programmes are supported by visiting speakers from relevant industries who provide specialist, current and often confidential information. This provides networking opportunity to seek internship, consultancy and work on a firm-based or firm-sponsored research project. Alumni Association: The graduate of our programmes have an opportunity to be a part of PYNDA, an alumni association of Plymouth Nautical Degree Association. PYNDA provides an opportunity to develop networking and business contacts to the graduates of our programmes. Graduates from the Venlo programme have their own similar alumni links. 5. Programme Structure MSc awards are offered in International Shipping (IShip), International Logistics and Supply Chain Management (ILSCM), and International Procurement and Supply Chain Management (IPSCM). Period 1 of the latter two awards is offered in Venlo (V), but all other studies are taken in Plymouth (P). All credits are offered at M level, with 180 credits required to achieve an MSc award, 120 credits for a PgDip and 60 for a Pg Cert award. Modules designated as core (C) are taken by all students. Programme Aims 1. To develop a systematic understanding within specialised fields of study and their interrelationship to other relevant disciplines. 2. To prepare the students to propose and initiate logistics, procurement and supply chain strategies required for complex international businesses. 3. To impart knowledge and create critical understanding of the specialist areas of shipping, logistics, procurement and supply chain management. 4. Admissions Criteria The admissions policy for MSc International Shipping, MSc International Logistics and Supply Chain Management, MSc International Procurement and Supply Chain Management conforms with the University Policy for Admissions to Postgraduate Taught Programmes of Study and with University policies on Equality and Diversity. Admissions to the programme will be determined by the Admissions Tutor Manager. The normal entry requirements are: A Second Class Honours degree (2:2) from a UK university, or An equivalent award from an overseas institution, or An equivalent professional qualification, or Other qualifications and/or experience that have demonstrated that the applicant has acquired knowledge and skills sufficient to be considered as equivalent to a degree and can meet the challenges and demands of this programme, and Work experience: where the applicant does not have a degree then a minimum three years relevant managerial level work experience is required. 7

8 For candidates whose first language is not English, evidence is required of spoken and written ability in English. This must be a minimum test score of 6.5 for IELTS or 90 for (internet based) for TOEFL. 10.
