2 From my own experience Studying and living in Venlo und Plymouth was a great experience I definitely do not want to miss! I chose the MSc International Procurement & SCM, which was offered the first time and which provided me with a specialisation in sourcing, rather than logistics. The courses were interesting and I gained very valuable knowledge I can use in my later job. I met awesome people all over the world Living in the two cities was also great. Venlo is close to major cities in Germany and Holland where travelling is made easy and you can experience new cultures. Plymouth is a city with hundreds of possibilities to spend your free time beach, shopping, sports, party, or whatever else you were interested in. It definitely never got boring, also because I met so many awesome people from all over the world. Especially this made the study to an unforgettable experience for me. Birthe Rehms 2

3 Study in the Netherlands & the U.K. for 12 months This Master of Science provides students the opportunity of both studying at one of the Netherlands leading Logistics education centres at Fontys University of Applied Sciences in Venlo, The Netherlands, and at Plymouth Business School at Plymouth University, U.K. Fontys in Venlo is renowned for its expertise in the area of internal and external logistics and has established itself as a non-disputed centre of expertise offering academic courses in Logistics Management. They originate from a structural and explicit demand for well-trained and practical logistic experts with hands-on experience. Throughout the years the demand for logistic expertise has increased substantially. Plymouth University enjoys an international reputation for its focus on international logistics, supply chain management and marine studies. The postgraduate programmes are managed by a specialist-team of academics from across the University. Many have undertaken doctorates and are members of relevant professional bodies. The course is conducted in the English language. Programme-structure There are 2 optional programme pathways; Career opportunities Postgraduates have established successful careers as academics, consultants, logistics analysts, writers, port managers, logistics integrators and operation managers. MSc in International Logistics and Supply Chain Management (ILSCM) MSc in International Procurement and Supply Chain Management (IPSCM)* *) The differences in these 2 programmes are; the pathway-module in term 2 and the topic of the research project in term 3. The study is divided into 3 terms, 90 EC (European credits) ; Term 1-30 EC 3 Core modules, which are taken at Fontys in Venlo, the Netherlands (September until December). Term 2-30 EC 3 Core modules, which are taken at Plymouth University, the U.K. (January until April). Term 3-30 EC Research Project, location of writing the dissertation can be everywhere (U.K., Netherlands, home country). 4 Modes of instruction: Workshops, lectures, group work, guest lecturers, practical assignments, seminars, group discussions, case studies, tutorials, field study, logistic excursions, research project. Assessment: Oral presentations, writing individual assignments, writing group assignments, in-class tests. Module description: Supply Chains and Production Control Systems This module introduces students to the management of operations and logistics control systems. It analyses the influences on the external business environment of organisations involved in international logistics, and synthesises the operation of logistics and production and control systems. Research Skills and economics for International Supply Chains This module develops the skills required to carry out international supply chain research including communication, writing and oral presentation, and promotes critical awareness of economic and other business contexts. Maritime Finance and Business Modelling This module considers the role of business finance in maritime industries including interpretation of traditional accounts and analysis of corporate performance and approaches to investment appraisal. It develops hands-on skills for decision making based on an integrated approach to quantitative decision methods using spreadsheets. Also, modern statistical tools are used to analyse problems in maritime business environments. Descriptive statistics and graphical displays, optimization and risk analysis will be covered. 5 Logistics, Supply Chains, Systems & Methods This module equips students to structure complex logistical and supply chain problems using operational tools to explore them, and present a conceptual model for dissertations. International Supply Chain Systems This module focuses on international supply chain systems that facilitate the flow of goods and services in international trading system. It considers various supply chain management functions and processes involved in optimising the supply chain performance to achieve and sustain competitive advantage in complex and dynamic trading environment. International Logistics Management The implications of channel management decisions are explored in the context of international logistics and supply chain management. International Procurement Management This module analyses principles underlying procurement processes and strategies. It explores the development and centrality of procurement as an integrated business function in supply chains, its interaction with other functions and organisations. Research Project In the Project/Dissertation students are expected to research a topic or problem related to their award title on the basis of relevant literature and appropriate empirical work. Students may participate in either an established research area or follow a line of work based on their own interest. This Research project, can be undertaken at any appropriate location worldwide. The way of thinking changed 180 degrees From my own experience The decision taken to do Masters was easy, because according to my experience during work, I have realized that only postgraduates are qualified for manager positions. It is important for future career since a Bachelor is no longer making you different from others. It was a great experience to join this Master program. This program especially in Fontys University exceeded the expectations I was targeting to meet. The way of thinking about logistics and supply chain has changed 180 degrees. I can confidently say that I started to think about new challenges in my career and I am absolutely sure that all of these ideas had come from the intense work I used to have during this study. Venlo is a nice small city where everyone knows each other and it is easy to make new connections, friends and start a new experience with other cultures. Plymouth as well was a nice experience for all of us, we really get closer to each other and the way of putting us in groups to do work was successful. We really learned from each other s experience. 6 Entry requirements Accommodation If accommodation in Venlo is required, Fontys can support you in finding a room. In the Netherlands, students usually do not live on campus but have their own room in a house with other students. However, the Netherlands does not have a tradition of on-campus accommodation. Most students live in or near their university town. Finding good, affordable room in Venlo for only 4 months can be difficult, therefor make sure you start looking for a room as soon as possible. Average room prices in Venlo are 375,- a month, including gas, water and electricity charges. For term 2 (and conceivable term 3) in Plymouth, much accommodation is available. If needed Plymouths Student Accommodation Office can assist you in finding a hall of residence, private house or lodgings with a family. Approximate accommodation costs in Plymouth are averagely 75 a week. 1. Requirement for this course is a relevant Bachelor degree or equivalent in a business, engineering or logistics subject. 2. For non-eu/eea students, proficiency in English is required to British Council Qualification IELTS level 6.5. Fontys will send you a letter of enrolment after having received your application form on the condition that you are accepted. Financial details Tuition fee The payment for the tuition fee is in two instalments. Part 1 (term 1) in EURO charged in August The tuition fee Venlo 3.700,- for EU / EEA students 4.900,- for non EU / EEA students Part 2 (term 2 & 3) in GBP charged in January Tuition fee for Plymouth in 6.000,- for EU / EEA students 8.117,- for non-eu / EEA students Scholarships /Student grants Fontys recommends non-e.u. students to contact the embassy of their country of origin to enquire about the availability of student grants or scholarships. Dutch students could apply for a VSB scholarship; Dutch students can also apply for student grant or a credit loan from DUO, 6

7 Visa and insurance (for non-eu students) To enter the Netherlands and U.K. for study purposes, you might need visa and/or a residence permit. Fontys will assist you in securing your entry visa, residence permit for the Netherlands and visa for the U.K. Non-EU / EEA students already studying or living in the Netherlands should ask for a change of goal for their valid Residence permit. Insurance Studying in the Netherlands requires insurance. Fontys offers a low cost insurance, specifically designed for international students, from the Lippmann company (for cover details: A full-cover insurance in the country of origin, is also possible. Life in Venlo and Plymouth Venlo Venlo is a border city in the south of the Netherlands, close to the German border, without any barriers or passport control. It is also 50 kilometres from the Belgium border and it is a 5-hour bus trip to Paris. That makes it very easy to visit countries such as Germany, Belgium and France. Venlo has about inhabitants. It attracts many German visitors which give the city a slight German touch. In the summertime it is nice and warm, about 25 C. In the winter-time it can be cold: temperatures of -10 C occur, but are not common. Dutch, a Germanic language, is spoken everywhere in the country. A lot of people in the Netherlands speak at least two foreign languages and nearly everyone understands and speaks English. Information about Fontys University of Applied Sciences With its 40,000 students, 4,000 members of staff and a range of courses covering almost every sector, Fontys University of Applied Sciences is one of the largest institutions for higher education in the Netherlands. The 29 faculties teach approximately 100 bachelor courses in the variants fulltime, part-time, sandwich and in-service. In addition, 24 master variants and 11 Associate degrees are provided as well as courses and training programmes are provided in urban centres, focused mainly in the Southern Netherlands. Plymouth Plymouth is a medium sized city with about inhabitants, situated in the South-West of the U.K. and benefits from its attractive location with a vibrant city life and culture, set in dramatic countryside and close to some of Britain s most beautiful beaches. English is the spoken language. Fontys in Venlo is well-known for its specialisation in Logistics. In the 1980 s Fontys started the first National Transport Academy, which still has a very good reputation.
