It is part of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, located in a university which is highly ranked for its teaching and research. The Department has links with a wide range of schools, universities and other educational institutions in the United Kingdom and throughout the world. It is committed to supporting excellence in both research and teaching, offering programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. ( TEACHING PROGRAMMES Undergraduate Level Since 2008 the Department has offered the BA in Childhood, Youth and Education Studies. In addition, work is currently in hand on developing a new undergraduate programme to be offered for the first time from September Provisionally entitled Education with Psychology, this degree will be offered in conjunction with the Department of Psychology. The Department of Education also offers a range of units to undergraduates of other university departments, as part of the university s Generally Available Units programme. These units cover learning theory, education in society, effective learning in higher education, educational psychology, and science education. Masters Level At Masters level the Department of Education offers three taught programmes: The MA in International Education and Globalisation (full-time) The MA TESOL (full-time) The MA in Education (part-time) These degrees are awarded for the satisfactory completion of five units of study plus a 15,000 word dissertation. In the academic year 2013/14, 45 full-time students enrolled on the MA TESOL programme. The MA in International Education and Globalisation is a new programme which will have its first student intake in September Some 800 students worldwide are enrolled in the part-time MA in Education programme. An agreement with the International Baccalaureate (IB) organisation allows experienced teachers of any of the IB programmes to work towards 5
6 the award of IB Educator Certificates in conjunction with study on the MA in Education programme. Named degrees in Educational Leadership & Management, in International Education, and in Learning & Teaching may be awarded for particular combinations of units of the MA in Education, plus a dissertation grounded in the specialist area of the degree. RESEARCH Researchers in the Department of Education are committed to a multidisciplinary approach to education. The strong practical and policy focus that characterises the Department s work has increasingly been enhanced through its position within the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. Links with other parts of the University, including the School of Management and the newly developing Institute for Policy Research, provide opportunities for academic collaboration more widely. The Department of Education is committed to a broad coverage of substantive areas of research interest and methodological orientations. Four Research Clusters provide the focus for research activity within the Department: Internationalisation and Globalisation of Education (led by Dr Mary Hayden) Language and Educational Practices (led by Dr Trevor Grimshaw) Educational Leadership, Management and Governance (led by Professor Chris James) Learning, Pedagogy and Diversity (led by Dr Jill Porter) The Clusters foster collaboration and provide support and mentoring for Cluster members in their research. They also facilitate knowledge transfer and the dissemination of our work to practitioners, research institutes, businesses, national and local government, the EU, overseas governments, international agencies, charities and NGOs, thus extending our impact in the wider national and international community. Two journals are edited by members of the Department: the Journal of Research in International Education (Editor Dr Mary Hayden), and the Journal of Education and Work (Editor Professor Hugh Lauder). The focus of the Research Clusters can be summarised as follows: Internationalisation and Globalisation of Education The major themes of this Cluster concern the impact of globalisation and the internationalisation of education (through policy and organisation) on educational practices and student experiences in schools and higher education institutions. Within these overarching themes members of the Cluster focus on particular areas including international education and international curricula in both international and national schooling systems, global citizenship education, the global impact of economic forces on higher education, the labour market and social mobility, peer relationships and learner identities, and schools as organisations and communities of practice in international contexts. Language and Educational Practices This Cluster comprises researchers with interests in the role of language and culture in the internationalization of higher education, specifically focusing on three areas: Language awareness and intercultural communication (including English for academic purposes; language, culture and identity, English as an International Language, English as a Lingua Franca & World Englishes; grammar learning and teaching; codeswitching) 6
7 Second language teacher education and development (including teacher cognition, pedagogy of international English language education; English as a medium of instruction; Content and Language Integrated Learning) Assessment and feedback (especially Language testing) Leadership, Management and Governance The central interest of this Cluster is research into practice and policy in leadership, management and governance in educational contexts. The particular research interests of Cluster members cover a range of relevant and inter-related issues, including leadership and management in schools within developing economies, capability theory in the context of educational leadership and management, the governance of international schools and accreditation, parental engagement in schools, leadership and management of faith-based schools and school governing, organisational dynamics in educational settings, and governance in the school and further education sectors. Learning, Pedagogy and Diversity The focus of this Cluster lies with equipping learners for life in contemporary society, both nationally and across the world. Members of the Cluster are involved in research designed to further the evidence base around a number of the core principles that underpin effective pedagogy: namely recognizing the significance of informal and formal learning; the contribution of prior experiences, especially those developed in the early years; fostering the active engagement of the learner; recognizing the central importance of the social processes that underpin learning; the ways in which learning is scaffolded; and designing assessment that is congruent with learning. Research is carried out with learners across the age span, reflecting the diverse cultures and contexts in which learning is situated. RESEARCH PROGRAMMES Over 170 full-time and part-time students are enrolled for research degrees (MRes, PhD and EdD) in the Department of Education. This aspect of the Department s work is highly regarded, and continues to grow in both size and reputation. Academic support for research students is provided through the Research Clusters, while administrative support is coordinated through the Faculty s Graduate School. As part of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, the Department is a member of the ESRC Doctoral Training Centre in the South West. The PhD programme is offered in both full- and part-time modes in the range of academic areas covered by staff in the Department. The MRes is a one-year full-time research training programme run in co-operation with other departments in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. The Doctor of Education (EdD) degree is a research doctorate, which includes four taught units (each assessed by an 8,000 word assignment) that are followed by a 45,000 word research thesis. Two units are compulsory (Educational Policy, and Educational Research: Philosophy & Practice) and two others are chosen from units offered by the Department s Research Clusters. Units are offered in intensive study weeks in Bath, and some are available online through programmes of directed learning. Further details of research, teaching programmes and activities of the Department of Education can be found via 7
