2 Description This course addresses learning in schools, workplaces and community. It connects research and practice in order to make you a stronger thinker, an engaged practitioner and an advanced specialist in a field of Education. The course addresses the professional learning needs of educators, educational administrators, managers, policy makers and others interested or involved in learning and education or educational work in the wider community, whether based locally or internationally. You will broaden your knowledge of key learning constructs, deepen your professional learning in specialist areas and advance your capacity as a professional inquirer. A research pathway is available for students who achieve a weighted average mark of at least 65 per cent (high credit) in units of this course. This is not available at the point of entry, but students interested in this pathway should consult with the student advisor. Please note: this course does not provide a recognised initial teaching qualification. Students seeking an initial teaching qualification should visit the Faculty website for information on the Master of Teaching. Specialisations Adult learning This specialisation focuses on ways to lead and develop communities of learners and their learning; in workplaces, communities and in local, regional, global and virtual spaces. It offers ideas and approaches to enable participation and learning, through formal and non-formal means, and expand and extend practice and skill development in communities. You will deepen your knowledge of how to lead and develop individuals and communities through workplace and vocational learning, regional education, global and intercultural education, through partnerships, community building and policy making. Digital learning This specialisation engages with the key issues and debates relating to digital technology in education and the application of effective educational technology practices for learning. You will learn how to adapt digital technologies effectively in teaching and learning across school, tertiary, workplace and community settings. There is a special focus on online teaching and learning but instructional issues relating to emerging technologies and practices, such as social media, digital games, mobile devices, virtual worlds and augmented reality will also be explored. Early childhood education This specialisation will develop your early childhood practices whether you are an early childhood educator, leader, policy maker or are simply interested in advancing your understanding of young children's learning. It addresses the emerging demand in global economies to build professional capacity for the early childhood sector. It will equip you to respond to complex issues around children, their families and communities. It will enhance your ability to understand and implement inclusive teaching and learning practices among young children and to lead educational work, innovative curriculum, teaching and policy, and professional learning in early childhood contexts. Educational leadership and policy This specialisation is for those interested in leading educational initiatives and institutions. It focuses on leadership practices and policy development within educational contexts. You will explore the concept and characteristics of a capable organisation, develop effective strategies to lead, manage and administer a capable organisation and learn how to build organisational resilience when confronted with change. Using empirical research you will evaluate the decision making process that occurs within organisations and the aspects that influence it and design strategies to improve problem solving and decision making processes and outcomes and enhance organisational capabilities Master of Education Detailed Course Requirements May 2015 v1.0 Page 2 of 7

3 Expert teaching practice This specialisation is designed for those wanting to extend their interest and deepen their knowledge and expertise of teaching and learning. You will address the complexity and artistry of teaching and learning and you will advance your understanding of curriculum areas such as literacy, mathematics and science. You will consider these aspects across contexts such as schools, tertiary education, workplaces and in communities. General education studies This specialisation enables you to tailor your unit choices to suit your own interests or needs while addressing the fundamental principles of learning in schools, workplaces and communities. It will challenge you to connect research and practice and inspire you to become a highly thoughtful, engaged practitioner and an advanced specialist. Throughout your studies you will build your learning through broadening your knowledge of key learning constructs, deepen your professional learning in areas of interest and advance your capacity as a professional inquirer. Inclusive and special education This specialisation focuses on building inclusive learning environments. It builds the knowledge and skills of participants that are required to differentiate learning and address diversity in learning settings. You will address the needs of learners with sensory, cognitive and behavioural issues and the attitudes of those who interact with them. It has a strong practice focus, preparing you to apply the principles and research knowledge into specific approaches to embrace diversity in learning settings and systems. Course outcomes These course outcomes are aligned with the Australian Qualifications Framework level 9, the Bologna Cycle 2 and Monash Graduate Attributes. Upon successful completion of this course it is expected that graduates will be able to: develop their knowledge and understanding of educational contexts and their issues, values and practices extend their understanding of key concepts relating to education examine areas of enhanced professional learning and develop a deeper understanding of professional practice develop critical analytical skills in discussing relevant research and academic concepts apply research processes to areas of professional interest and practice synthesise and communicate ideas at an advanced academic level demonstrate advanced capacity as knowledgeable, evidence-informed and reflective practitioners. 4 Course requirements The course comprises 96 points structured into four parts: Part A. Orientation to education (24 points), Part B. Key constructs in education (12 or 24 points), Part C. Enhanced professional learning (24 or 36 points) and Part D. Professional inquiry (12 or 24 points). Students admitted at Entry level 1 complete 96 points, comprising Part A, Part B, Part C and Part D. Students admitted at Entry level 2 complete 72 points, comprising units from Part B, Part C and Part D. Students admitted at Entry level 3 complete 48 points, comprising units from Part B, Part C and Part D. Note: Students eligible for credit for prior studies may elect not to receive the credit and complete one of the higher credit-point options. Units are 12 credit points unless otherwise stated. Key constructs in education (12 or 24 points) Students complete one or two units from the following: EDF5620 Leading education and work EDF5621 Challenging curriculum, pedagogy and assessment EDF5622 Developing learners and learning EDF5623 Deepening education and sustainability EDF5632 Understanding inclusion in learning communities* *Students in the Inclusive and special education specialisation must complete this unit in their Part B studies. All other students may select this unit in their Part C studies. PART C. 6 EDF5657 Indigenous perspectives in professional practice EDF5665 Environmental education, design and learning for sustainability EDF5666 Education, development and ecological sustainability EDF5674 Engaging with practices of contemporary science EDF5810 Applied learning GENERAL EDUCATION STUDIES Students complete two or three units from any of those listed elsewhere in Part C. INCLUSIVE AND SPECIAL EDUCATION Students complete both of the following: EDF5656 Practising inclusion EDF5667 Positive behaviour support PART D. Professional inquiry (12 or 24 points) a) Students in the Inclusive and special education specialisation complete both of the following: EDF5692 Professional practice in special and inclusive education EDF5699 Extended teaching practice (0 points) b) Students in all other specialisations have one or two of the following units or the research pathway in c) below: EDF5691 Professional project EDF5693 Using and evaluating research evidence EDF5694 Taking a stand in education debates EDF5695 Self-study as professional inquiry EDF5814 Creative research approaches c) An alternative research pathway is available for students* who achieve a weighted average mark of at least 65 per cent (high credit) in the units of this course. This is not available at the point of entry, however students commencing at Entry level 1 or 2 and interested in this possibility must make space to pursue two units of professional inquiry by restricting the number of units across Part B and Part C accordingly. Students commencing at Entry level 3 who are interested in a research pathway should contact the student adviser to discuss options immediately after completing their first two units (with at least a 65% average). Students invited into this pathway take the following two units: EDF5613 Research approaches in education EDF5614 Research project in education *Due to professional accreditation requirements, the research pathway is not available to students undertaking the Inclusive and Special Education specialisation. Progression to further studies Students invited to complete the required two research units (24 points) will be eligible to apply for progression to a higher degree by research as per the following requirements Master of Education Students who have completed the following two units with a minimum mark of 65 per cent (high credit) in each unit are eligible to apply for 0077 Master of Education which is a research degree by thesis. Students choosing 3204 Master of Education, a research degree by thesis and coursework, may receive credit for 24 points towards the following coursework units: Master of Education Detailed Course Requirements May 2015 v1.0 Page 6 of 7

7 EDF5613 Research approaches in education EDF5614 Research project in education Doctor of Philosophy Students may be eligible for admission to the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) if they meet Monash University Institute of Graduate Research eligibility requirements of a weighted average mark of 70 per cent (distinction) for all units, and have achieved a minimum mark of 70 per cent (distinction) in each of the following two units: EDF5613 Research approaches in education EDF5614 Research project in education Alternative exit(s) Students may exit this course early and apply to graduate with one of the following awards, provided they have satisfied the requirements indicated for that award during their enrolment in this Masters course: Graduate Certificate of Education Studies after successful completion of 24 points of study Graduate Diploma of Education Studies after successful completion of 48 points of study Master of Education Detailed Course Requirements May 2015 v1.0 Page 7 of 7
