3 Seminars and personal field trips UPMC Hamot Research days fair UPMC Hamot s Medical Education, Research, and Nursing Departments are excited for the opportunity to host a select group of your high school students at each year s Research Days, April The theme for Research Days is different every year (Forensics in Medicine for 2014). The event lasts three days with different podium presentations and a poster booth fair given by medical residents, medical students, nurses and Doctors Dates: April 23 rd OR April 24 th OR April 25 th during school. (you may choose only one) voelkerdr@upmc.edu or Eligibility: 10 students max or more with special request. Duration: one full school day (personal field trip) Dates: Eligibility: Duration: GE engineering day competition Each year, GE Transportation sets aside a day to host local high school juniors and seniors, who are (or might be) interested in engineering. Students will gain insight into the principles of engineering and how to pursue a career in engineering. The event consists of speakers from GE and the community, as well as friendly engineering competitions. Past competitions have included an egg drop device design, spaghetti bridges, and catapult designs, among others. It is typically an all-day event, starting at 8am and concluding at 2pm. Summer Programs Regional Summer School of Excellence in Science (Gannon) Two weeks of laboratory and field-site study in the life sciences at Gannon University to provide the challenge, excitement and simulation of doing field research on environmental problems in life sciences in the fields of medicine, public health, epidemiology, Environmental health, zoology, ecology, limnology, histology, analytical chemistry, biochemistry, microbiology, physics, and embryology. Health and Biomedical Sciences Summer Camp (Lebannon Valley College) Through hands-on laboratory investigations in state-of-the-art laboratories, students will be

4 introduced to the fundamentals of molecular biology, pharmacology, immunology, biochemistry and medical ethics. Students will engage in investigative experiences that will allow them to apply their laboratory skills to real life problems. Students will interact with practicing professionals in fields such as medicine, physical therapy, toxicology, genetic counseling and biomedical laboratory research. Dates: Eligibility: Application deadline: approximate (when registration is filled months before summer) 1 st camp session: all week of June 22 2 nd camp session: all week of July 6 or lappas@lvc.edu or (717) Application Cost is $900 or free if scholarship winner. Pennsylvania Governor s School for Science (Carnegie Melon U.) A highly regarded, intense program in which the students take courses in biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics and computer science. In addition, they are expected to participate in their choice of one laboratory course in either biology, chemistry, physics, or computer science, and to engage in team research projects. The students take elective courses, participate in several field trips, and are privileged to hang out with distinguished guests. Governor s schools are also a big deal across the U.S. At Carnegie Melon U., a world class, award winning Science University. Free, but selection is very difficult. Dates: Application deadline: Jan 31. Camp dates: June 29 to August 2 (one week) www-pgss.mcs.cmu.edu. Don t be fooled by the old looking website. Eligibility: For outstanding Juniors only Pennsylvania Governor s School for Engineering and Technology (Lehigh U.) A highly regarded, intense program in which the students take modern engineering courses such as energy, healthcare/bioengineering, cyber security, transportation/infrastructure, environment/ sustainability, manufacturing/additive manufacturing, personal electronics, 3D printing, nanotechnology, and military technology. The students also take elective courses, several field trips, and are privileged to hang out with distinguished guests. Governor s schools are also a big deal across the U.S. At Lehigh U., a world class, award winning Engineering University. Free, but selection is very difficult. Dates: Deadline: end of May. Camp dates: July 20 - August website: inpgset@lehigh.edu Eligibility: For outstanding sophomores and Juniors only Duration: 2 weeks ASM materials Camp (Allegheny College) A two-day camp utilizing hands-on learning principles of applied math, physics, and chemistry. A very unique team-based, intensive problem solving science experience under the direction of distinguished industry leaders and college faculty. The Camp includes a combination of minidemonstrations and field trips with extensive involvement in laboratory facilities to actively explore materials science & engineering principles in practice with local industry. Dates: Camp: June 24 & 25

5 Deadline: May 23 Website: Eligibility: Duration: Sophomores or Juniors who are highly motivated, inquisitive learners with math and science aptitude. ( two days) Summer Academy for Math and Science (Carnegie Melon U.) A six-week experience designed to increase the number of outstanding students from diverse backgrounds who pursue education in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) disciplines at the nation's top colleges and universities. The program focuses on coursework, standardized test preparation, hands-on science and engineering projects, and various opportunities for personal and social development. The goal of the program is to prepare students for admission to selective colleges and universities. Dates: Camp: June 28 Aug 9 Deadline: April 1 Eligibility: At least 16 years old. Sophomores and juniors. Students will be responsible for books, supplies, transportation and recreational expenses. Duration: 6 weeks. Penn State junior science and humanities symposium (Penn State U Main) Students can attend individually or in a team to present a research paper, present a poster or simply attend the other presentations in the fields of: Earth and Space Sciences; Environmental Sciences Physical Sciences Medicine; Health/Behavioral and Social Sciences Mathematic and Computer Sciences Life Sciences Engineering, Technology, or Computer Science Presentation categories may change Dates: Deadline: February 28 Camp: March 30 - April 1 Eligibility: Best and brightest math/science students in high school Cost: 125$ Duration: 2 days (school vacation permission form required) For research paper presenters. 1 st : 1500$ 2 nd : 1000$ 3 rd : 500$ Penn State Communications Camp Film and Multimedia Journalism Camp The Penn State Camp for Filmmakers offers you the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in film and video production.

Penn State Weather Camp During this week of camp, you will receive hands-on experience in many aspects of weather, including the actual process of making a forecast at Penn State s Department of Meteorology at the University Park campus. Discover the following: read and analyze weather charts use forecast models to make predictions launching a weather balloon surfing the world s best Internet weather sites explore the underlying principles of meteorology acquire valuable knowledge of the present, past, and future states of the atmosphere analyze surface weather maps and release a weather balloon create a weather broadcast and take a video copy home tour Penn state University Park and the local National Weather Service office get a glimpse of the various careers associated with meteorology. Cost: $849 fee covers instruction, housing, food, and all program materials. However, full and partial scholarships are available to financially disadvantaged students, and other scholarships are available to students from underrepresented groups. Penn State Architecture and Landscape Architecture Summer Camp This Penn State summer camp offers you the opportunity to immerse yourself in the kinds of activities that take place in a university s professional design programs in architecture and landscape architecture. Faculty, alumni, and experienced undergraduate and graduate students will mentor the campers, who will use the facilities of the Penn State School of Architecture. You can try your hand at design and take part in hands-on building and modelmaking activities. You ll also tour the unique architecture and landscape architecture of the Penn State campus and take a field trip to Fallingwater the famous house designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. You ll round out your camp activities with films, campus tours, and social events. Dates: Deadline: June 25 Camp dates: July Website: raa121@psu.edu Eligibility: 8 12 th graders. Duration: 4 days

7 Cost: ($995 on or before May 31 or $1,045 after May 31) covers instruction, housing, food, all program materials, and the field trip and admission to Falling Water Park. However, full and partial scholarships are available to financially disadvantaged students, and other scholarships are available to students from underrepresented groups. Women in Science and Engineering Program at PSU Behrend. Women in Science and Engineering summer programs offered by Penn State Behrend. Both programs are designed for academically-talented students from the Erie County, Pennsylvania area. The non-residential nature of this program does not typically enable students from other areas to participate. The programs give local students, who qualify, a chance to enroll in a university credit course with regularly-enrolled college students the summer before their senior year in high school. Both programs provide plenty of direct, hands-on experience through field trips, workshops, and lectures conducted by professionals in local businesses and organizations. Dates: Application deadline: April 28 Scheduling and Orientation: June 11 Programs begin: July 1 Website: mlg5@psu.edu Eligibility: Must be a female junior with a 3.00 GPA or SAT score of 1350 Duration: 3 days a week for 1 and ½ months Free college credits Cost: FREE. Competitions / Exams Siam s M3 challenge. Teams of 3 5 compete to provide the best mathematical based solution to an actual currentl United States Economic issue. Dates: Registration deadline: Feb 28 Contest date: Mar 8 OR Mar 9 (weekend) Eligibility: 11 th 12 th grade only. Teams of 3-5 Duration: 1 day (Saturday or Sunday) 6 winners totaling more than $ worth of scholarships. Mathematics AMC exam The Mathematical Association of America is the largest professional society that focuses on mathematics accessible at the undergraduate level. This is a Nationally recognized competition exam they offer. High scorers receive invitations to higher recognized competitions. Dates: AMC 10/12 A Registration deadline: Jan. 10 Competition day: 02/04/2014 AMC 10/12 B Registration deadline: Jan. 24 Competition day: 02/19/ Eligibility: AMC 10: 9 th and 10 th graders. AMC 12: 11 th and 12 th graders.

8 Duration: 2 class periods. High recognition, Medals, invitations to higher recognized competitions, Siemens research Competition The Siemens Competition in Math, Science & Technology fosters individual growth for high school students who are willing to challenge themselves through science research. Through this competition, students have an opportunity to achieve national recognition for science research projects that they complete in high school. Dates: Registration deadline: May Materials submission deadline: Sep 30 Eligibility: Teams of 2 or 3 Duration: Your own pace. Up to 6 months scholarships ranging from $10,000 to $100,000. AP EXAM Dates: Deadline: Feb 17 th Mr. Grychowski. Eligibility: None (you don t even need to be taking an AP course, but good luck with out it) COSTS 89$ Duration: Two class periods. Score based scholarships, number of exams taken scholarships, college credit, recognition. After school Programs / Team Competitions RWDC (Real World Design Challenge) Teams of 1 7 compete to provide a Computer Aided Drafting design in aviation to an current Federal Aviation Association issue that usually involves designing actual aircraft. Dates: State Challenge Issued: October 10, 2013 Team Registration Deadline: December 20, 2013 Solution Submission Deadline: March 31, 2014 Eligibility: Teams of Mr. Biebel Very High recognition, invitation to higher recognized competitions, extremely good experience, highly recognized experience. Dates: AMC Interstellar Math tournament. Team tournament in mathematics with half hour matches every week. To participate, each student must have access to the internet, ideally via laptop/desktop. All matches will be weekly, last 30 minutes, and can be scheduled for any day/time. Teams will be matched evenly based on past performance. The first 4 weeks of scrimmaging will be followed by a bracket tournament just like the NCAA College Basketball Final Four. Deadline: May 31st commence the first week of October and conclude the first week of December. Contests once a week any time or day.

9 Mr. Biebel Eligibility: None? Dates: Eligibility: Duration: PA Math League Every month a short 6 question quiz is given to all team members at the same time. Each quiz is taken individually for up to a half hour. The more people and the more questions answered right result in more points for the prep team. We beat collegiate academy and took the state regional championship first year! Starts in October Mr. Biebel None 6 periods over the course of 6 months. See trophy in Mr. Biebel s room. Scholarships John Stossel Essay scholarship. Investigative Journalism essay. Winners are awarded scholarships and vacations. Dates: Deadline: February 14 Eligibility: none 125 CASH PRIZES totaling $15,500! First and second place winners will also receive an allexpense-paid trip to New York City to meet John Stossel

Also one of the most inexpensive, non-time-consuming degrees out there. College: MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology ) Degree All Science and Engineering programs Program: The Nation/World s best College for Science and Mathematics. However, it is just as hard to get into as the best Ivy League schools because competition is so tough. College: Degree Program: CMU (Carnegie Melon University) All Science and Engineering programs.
