2 School of Sciences The School of Sciences at Auburn Montgomery offers a combination of excellence in education and a wide selection of majors and coursework, all within a unique interdisciplinary environment. You can choose from 25 different programs of study and 300 courses or even tailor your degree to suit your interests. Get Personal Attention With a student-to-faculty-ratio of 16:1, Auburn Montgomery offers much smaller classes than are typical for a public university. Our pre-med, pre-dental and pre-optometry graduates have gone on to receive professional degrees from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, University of Florida, Johns Hopkins, Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, Morehouse, Vanderbilt, Harvard and Yale, to name just a few. Graduates of the pre-law program are found throughout the halls of state and local government and include judges from the municipal through appellate court levels. Students from our pre-engineering program have gone on to successful careers in engineering following graduation from Auburn University and other schools of engineering. Future Teachers If you are interested in teaching math or science in grades 6-12 (secondary education), you can earn your bachelor s degree in education with a major in mathematics or general science. This requires taking courses in both the School of Sciences and the School of Education. 4 Majors That Make a Difference Biology The Department of Biology at Auburn Montgomery is a leader in preparing undergraduates for careers in the health professions, government (at the city, state and federal level), industry, and academia. Biologists work in research in university and industry labs, in; as well as environmental assessment, management and conservation; public health and epidemiology; forensic science; and science education (note that many occupations do require an advanced degree). Students can develop a focus with concentrations in health sciences, medical laboratory science, environmental science, molecular biology, microbiology and public health, and general biology (including secondary education biology). Learn more at Justice and Public Safety A Bachelor of Science in Justice and Public Safety provides broad academic preparation and advanced course work for those seeking a career in legal and law enforcement related fields. Students may specialize in either criminal justice or legal studies. Learn more at Mathematics The mathematics programs at Auburn Montgomery will prepare you either for a career right out of college or for entering graduate school for further study. You may concentrate your studies in: mathematical economics, mathematical sciences with an emphasis in computer science, traditional mathematics or secondary education mathematics. 5 Physical Science Auburn Montgomery s Physical Science program is ideal for students seeking a career in industrial, academic, or governmental laboratories or in forensic science. It also is a great start if you are planning to attend professional or graduate school. You can choose a concentration in chemistry or forensic sciences or pursue a pre- professional program of study. They also create a firm foundation for graduate study. 7 Accomplished Alumni Tracey McCooey, B.S., Political Science, 87 Judge Tracey McCooey was elected circuit judge in Montgomery County in 1988, the latest achievement in a distinguished legal career that has included stints as chief legal counsel for the Alabama State Employees Association and deputy district attorney in Montgomery County. McCooey is renowned for her creation of the Mental Health Court, as well as her work in several Restorative Justice programs. She is a recipient of the Women of Excellence Award, the Alabama Association of Community Corrections Judges Award and the Junior League of Montgomery Unsung Hero Award. My professors in the political science department at AUM were wonderful examples of professional, caring and unselfish people who always gave of themselves in the classroom as well as the community. Dr. Rick Bright, B.S., Biology, 97 From his many years with the Center for Disease Control to his current position as scientific director of the Influenza Vaccine Project at PATH, Dr. Rick Bright has been an international leader in researching and preventing pandemics across the globe. AUM is where I learned the foundation for all of it. The trust and confidence of the faculty speaks highly for what I ve built in my life. Dr. Thavatchai Chai Chamnong, B.S., Physical Science, 92 Dr. Chai Chamnong is one of a growing number of osteopathic doctors in Montgomery. Board certified in family medicine, he has established a private practice in Montgomery. A native of Thailand, Chamnong earned several scholarship offers after high school. He chose AUM for its reputation for producing students that were successful at getting into medical school. The professors helped me prepare for professional school with excellent guidance.
