2 Tests of Engineering Aptitude, Mathematics and Science (TEAMS) TEAMS is a one-day engineering competition where students collaborate and apply math and science skills to solve real-world engineering issues Annual theme based on the National Academy of Engineering Grand Challenges the 2016 theme is Engineering the Tools of Innovation Topics are theme-based the 2016 competition will include optics, space exploration and effective manufacturing

3 TEAMS Highlights 10,000 students competed in TEAMS in ,200 teams competed in 2015 Students can compete at their own school (onsite location), at a nearby local school (secondary host site) or at a collegiate host site Best in State and Best in Nation awards Top ranking teams in the state may compete at the national TEAMS competition, held at the national TSA conference, for Best in Nation rankings

4 TEAMS Competitors All middle and high school students may compete in TEAMS Each team is composed of 4-8 students Teams compete at their own grade level: middle school, 9/10 or 11/12 TEAMS participants typically have a strong interest in STEM academic areas Each team has an adult coach to guide their preparation and who attends the competition

5 Competition Window State Level Competitions All state level competitions occur between February 8 and March 20th Register online at teams.tsaweb.org beginning in September National Level Competitions Top ranking teams in each state are invited to compete at the national level TEAMS competitions, June 28 th July 2 nd The 2016 national TEAMS competitions are scheduled to be held during the national TSA conference, June 28 th July 2 nd, in Nashville, TN

6 Competition Venues Competing at a collegiate host site Universities around the country serve as host sites for TEAMS. Each year hosts update their information regarding the competition date and any fees they charge to hold the competition. Check the TEAMS website host locations. Competing at a local middle or high school When a collegiate host site is not available, high schools and middle schools may choose to invite other schools to participate at their location and they become secondary host sites. Competing in an environment with other teams increases the enthusiasm and excitement of students. Competing as an on-site location If you are not able to compete at a collegiate or secondary host site, you may also hold the competition at your own school for your own students. To do so, choose Onsite Location as the competition site when you register.

7 Competition Format - State State Level Competition Format High School Part 1 teams have 90 minutes to solve 80 multiple choice questions related to 8 engineering scenarios related to the annual competition theme Part 2 teams have 90 minutes to complete short-answer essays and a hands-on design challenge related to the annual competition theme State Level Competition Format Middle School Part 1 teams have 60 minutes to solve 80 multiple choice questions related to 8 engineering scenarios related to the annual competition theme Part 2 teams have 60 minutes to complete short-answer essays and a hands-on design challenge related to the annual competition theme

8 Competition Format - National National Level Competition Format Middle and High School Prepared Presentation - A presentation topic and parameters are published prior to the conference. Students prepare prior to the conference, presentations are given at the conference and teams are evaluated using a rubric. Problem Solving - An onsite problem related to the annual theme is given to participating teams at the specified time at the national TSA conference. Minimal information about the problem is published prior to the conference. The problem is accompanied by related math/science problems to be solved. Teams are evaluated using a rubric. Written - A topic is assigned based on the theme for the year. Teams are given parameters and a deadline for submitting the paper online prior to the national TSA conference. Team submissions are evaluated using a rubric. TEAMS Best in Nation is determined by combining the three national competition scores. The Best in Nation title is awarded to the top team at each level middle school, 9/10 and 11/12.
