The B Teaching / B Exercise Science (4 years) is a secondary teaching qualification with 8 PE units built in as a major and 4 spaces for units for students to obtain a minor to provide a second teaching method (for example: Health, Maths, Science, Psychology, Business). The B Physical Activity and Health Science (3 years) is for students who enjoy sport and science but are not quite sure of their direction. It is a flexible degree with 10 electives. Students can major in PE or Outdoor Education (which has a wide variety of options for elective units; field trips and excursions, camps; there is a small extra cost per semester for Outdoor Ed) and minor in Health, Maths, Science or Psychology. Students are able to obtain 2 teaching methods if they decide they would like to continue and undertake a post graduate teaching qualification or they can study sufficient units to gain entry as a graduate into the Masters of Clinical Exercise Physiology. (A Clinical Exercise Physiologist uses exercise as a rehabilitation tool, has a Medicare Provider Number, receives referrals from GPs, is an Allied Health member and works with victims of stroke, heart disease, diabetes, accident and so on.) 11. ACUCOM This training provider offers a safety net or second chance for Year 12 students. ACUCOM is an arm of ACU which provides TAFE qualifications where students are able to ease into tertiary study at ACU with extra support. Fees vary for each ACUCOM course. The Diploma of Nursing is a guaranteed pathway into the second year of the B Nursing (providing the Diploma is completed). Application for the Diploma is direct to ACUCOM and students sit an Aptitude test and attend an interview as part of the selection process. A Police and Working With Children Check is required. The Certificate in Exercise Science comprises the Cert III in Fitness and 2 units from the Bachelor programme. VCE English is required for entry via a direct application to ACUCOM. It is a 6 month course. Students need 1 x Pass and 1 x Credit result for the 2 Bachelor degree units. If these results are obtained and the Cert III in Fitness is completed students are guaranteed mid year entry to the B Exercise Science. The Certificate in Educational Support comprises Cert IV in Educational Support and 2 units from the B Education (Primary) degree. This is a 12 month course; 1 Bachelor degree unit is studied each semester and 100 hours of practical experience is embedded in the Certificate. Prospective students apply direct to ACUCOM and sit a pre training literacy and numeracy assessment as part of the selection process. To pathway into the B Education (Primary) degree students must meet all prerequisites and achieve a Pass in all units of the Cert IV in Educational Support and a Credit in both the Bachelor degree units. They must also have a study score of at least 25 in English. Alternatively the Cert IV in Education Support can be completed as a stand alone qualification to become a Teacher Aide. New in 2016: the Cert III and Diploma in Early Childhood Education and Care; a 2 year course, although students may exit the course after 12 months with a Cert III. Prospective students apply direct to ACUCOM and sit a pre training literacy and numeracy assessment. Credit from this course is available for articulation into the B Education (Birth 5) or the B Education (Primary and Early Childhood). 12. AUTOMOTIVE TRAINING AT KANGAN At the recent Careers Advisers seminar held at the Kangan Docklands Centre for Automotive Excellence we were told of the shortage of Autoelectricians. These days there is a large component of electrical training in the automotive apprenticeship and more young people with an interest in this field are needed. The automotive manufacturing industry may be closing but the retail, service and repair industry employs more than 300,00 people and is growing. The automotive industry is going clean and green, is more customer focussed, provides professional service, diagnosis and repairs, fault analysis and prevention and support for manufacturer s dedicated innovations. Career pathways are as a Tradesperson, Service Adviser, Diagnostic Specialist, Trainer, Mechanical Engineer and a Manager / Business Owner. 15. PATHWAY TO COMMERCE AT KANGAN The Kangan TAFE Accounting pathway to a degree is 18 months. This comprises the Cert IV in Accounting (6 months) or the Cert IV in Bookkeeping (6 months), the Diploma of Accounting (6 months) and the Advanced Diploma of Accounting (6 months); these qualifications allow students to articulate into the B Commerce (offered by Federation University and delivered at Kangan Broadmeadows) which takes a further 18 months to complete; therefore total time to complete the degree is 3 years no loss of time and 3 additional qualifications. The B Commerce is a generalist course with careers available in public accounting, banking, teaching, government organisations, stockbroking, business consulting, retail, manufacturing and mining industries. EARLY OFFER ASPIRE PROGRAMME AT LA TROBE UNIVERSITY The Aspire programme, launched in 2014, saw 1,100 students receive early offers for places in courses at La Trobe University, commencing in Many students work hard to make positive changes in their schools and communities through volunteering and La Trobe recognises these efforts through their Aspire programme. La Trobe has also announced a working partnership with the Country Fire Authority and the Duke of Edinburgh programme. These partnerships reflect the desire of the university to collaborate with people and organisations that share the vision of making a positive difference in their communities. Aitken students also learned about the Aspire programme during a presentation at the TIS excursion the VCE students attended on Wednesday 27 th May. Online Aspire applications opened on Monday 1st June, visit: for more information and / or to apply. 20. AUSTRALIAN CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY (ACU) EAP PROGRAMME ACU offers the Early Achievers Programme which recognises that students are more than their academic results. ACU considers contributions students have made to the community through their school or workplace, community organisations and cultural and / or religious groups. This is also an early offer programme where students may access a course of their choice with a significantly lower ATAR than the Clearly In. Applications open Monday 19th August. Visit: for more information. 21. PUBLIC HEALTH CAREERS NIGHT 5 This is a great opportunity to get tips and advice from those already working in the field of public health. The evening will consist of short presentations about careers in public health followed by a panel discussion and question time. The event is hosted by the Public Health Association of Australia, the Australian Health Promotion Association and the Australasian Faculty of Public Health Medicine. It will take place on Monday 15th June, 5:00 7:30pm in the Auditorium, Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity, 792 Elizabeth St, Melbourne. To register or obtain more information visit: BOX HILL INSTITUTE S CERTIFICATE IV IN DISABILITY Box Hill Institute has partnered with AMAZE Victoria to co deliver the Certificate IV in Disability. It is the only course that offers the unit: Support individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder, an area of growing need. Negotiations are also underway to offer students the opportunity to undertake Sign Language (Auslan) Level 1 as a part of the course. Integral to the course are guest speakers from industry and targeted skills development sessions (for example: The Road to Empowerment drama therapy techniques). The course is offered 2 full days per week. Job opportunities in the industry are high for graduates with good employment outcomes. 23. OBTAINING AN APPRENTICESHIP It is not easy for young people to find an apprenticeship. Employers generally prefer their apprentice to have completed Year 12 (VCE or VCAL), be at least 18 years old, hold a driver s licence, have their own vehicle and often to have completed a pre apprenticeship course. Pre apprenticeship courses are available in many trades such as automotive, carpentry, electrotechnology, furniture making, carpentry, tiling and plumbing, for example. Once the pre apprenticeship has been completed the young person needs to find an employer willing to take them on as an apprentice - employment opportunities may sometimes be found among friends, relatives, neighbours, sports associates and so on. Alternatively, Group Training Companies employ many apprentices, visit: for more information. Compiled by: c. borg and m. walker
