2 Description This course is for those passionate about health and keen to contribute to addressing real health challenges whether they confront individuals or communities. It will provide you with a sound foundation in health science and a broad overview of health care, and with skills in identifying, investigating, analysing and assessing health issues. This foundation leads to a number of specialisations enabling you to pursue a variety of allied and public health career paths. The course is suited to those who wish to undertake clinical work or research either immediately or after pursuing a post graduate degree, and those who wish to progress to the non-clinical health workforce including epidemiology, health promotion, planning or policy. The common thread is the commitment to an evidence based approach to delivering quality health care efficiently and effectively whether the focus is on individuals, families or communities. You will learn from passionate teachers, who are experts both in clinical practice and research, and also in real-world public health challenges such as accident recovery, disease prevention, obesity, and problem gambling. Our research units and links to researchers and health professionals across Monash, its related hospitals and around the world, will help you pursue your interest as far as you can take it. Your studies commence at the Caulfield campus, where you will apply scientific approaches to the study and improvement of health, considering physiological, behavioural, developmental, social and environmental aspects of human health and disease. At the conclusion of the first semester of second year, you will continue with a chosen specialisation at its campus base of Peninsula, Caulfield or Clayton, developing an in-depth knowledge of the theory and practice of one of the following fields of health science: Emergency health and paramedic practice Human services Public health science Radiation sciences Emergency Health and Paramedic Practice will qualify you for employment as a paramedic in ambulance and community-based emergency health services. Paramedics are at the forefront of medical care in the community. They provide unscheduled health care for people experiencing a health emergency, initiating care and determining appropriate referral of patients to enable continuing care. A paramedic is also required to work with other emergency services to respond to mass casualty incidents in a range of situations. Human Services focuses on child and family well-being and community work and how to promote their positive development. In particular, it focuses on improving the lives of people who are disadvantaged. This expertise is sought after by government and community agencies in contexts that range from schools to correctional agencies, housing to mental health services. This specialisation will prepare you upon graduation for direct entry into the Master of Social Work (Qualifying). On completion of the Master of Social Work (Qualifying) you will be are eligible for accreditation with the Association of Social Work and able to seek employment as a qualified Social Worker. The health care industry is extensive and requires people with a sound understanding of health and health care to fill a range of non-clinical roles. With a degree in Public Health Science, you will find rewarding opportunities in public health research, health promotion and disease prevention practice and policy, health planning and management in government and non-government organisations, including community health organisations. You will also be well prepared for further study as a public health researcher. Radiation Science is an exciting health care field using radiant energy for the diagnoses and treatment of injuries and illnesses. The equipment used by radiation scientists is increasingly sophisticated and a comprehensive knowledge of equipment function, operation and computer interfacing is necessary. There is also an increasing demand for adaptable medical radiation science professionals in response to the aging population and organic growth of the industry (medical imaging, radiotherapy and nuclear medicine). This specialisation can therefore lead to a rewarding and fulfilling career for people interested in a technicallyoriented healthcare field. It prepares graduates for direct entry into the Master of Medical Radiations, upon Bachelor of Health Sciences Detailed Course Requirements January 2015 v1.0 Page 2 of 6

3 successful completion of which graduates are eligible to apply for general registration as a Radiation Therapist from the Medical Radiation Practice Board of Australia. Specialisations Emergency Health and Paramedic Practice This specialisation will prepare you as a paramedic with the practical skills of basic and advanced life support that are required to assess and care for patients with out-of-hospital acute and chronic emergencies. You will develop clinical competence for community-based emergency health settings using a patient-centric, systematic clinical approach. You will also develop professional knowledge of epidemiology, population health, research methods and principles of evidence-based practice. Human Services This specialisation provides professional education for the practice of social work. It covers social work principles and methods of intervention relating to individuals, families, groups and communities. The focus is on implementing and promoting child and family well-being programs and working with communities to build capacities. It also includes social work research, social policy and management. Fieldwork is interwoven with class work throughout the course. Public Health Science Public health focuses on populations and communities rather than individuals, and spans the spectrum from promoting good health, through preventing disease, to managing illness and disability. The public health specialisation includes aspects both of biomedical sciences (such as physiology and pharmacology) and of social sciences (such as sociology and program evaluation) along with epidemiology, biostatistics and research methods. It focuses on developing, implementing and evaluating programs and policies to promote health and prevent disease and injury; and undertaking public health research. It has a global orientation, examining both Australian and international health challenges. Radiation Sciences In this specialisation you will learn about medical radiation physics and instrumentation, imaging and treatment modalities, radiation therapy and oncology and apply these and beginner level patient care skills in the clinical environment. You will consider psychological, medico-legal and ethical aspects of health care, develop your cultural and communicative competence, and learn about occupational health and safety. Course outcomes These course outcomes are aligned with the Australian Qualifications Framework level 7, the Bologna Cycle 1 and Monash Graduate Attributes. Upon successful completion of this course it is expected that graduates will be able to: apply knowledge of human health, disease and promotion to a range of professional contexts demonstrate in-depth knowledge of a specific health science discipline develop, apply, integrate and generate health science knowledge in professional contexts to analyse challenges and to develop effective solutions collect, organise, analyse, interpret and report health data communicate effectively with diverse audiences and in a variety of formats work and learn in both independent and collaborative ways with others to encompass diverse abilities and perspectives exercise personal, professional and social responsibility as a global citizen.
